The problem Rivers has is that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.
When he wrote Blue and Pinkerton, He was actually an angsty young guy. He got shit on for Pinkerton at the time it came out, so he changed his sound. Then, they came out with Green, and people were universally meh. By the time he got to Make Believe, everybody hated his new sound and suddenly realized that Pinkerton was great and started demanding that he go back to that sound. He said fuck it and tried to keep going in a new direction, which never really worked. So then he wrote EWBAITE, trying purposefully to sound like early 90's Weezer again, and everybody started sucking his dick.
His problem is that people want something with the weight and nostalgia of Blue and Pinkerton but they fail to realize that those albums were great because they were honest for who he was at the time. If he wrote an album now that was brutally honest, it would be about being a fabulously wealthy middle aged guy. But nobody would want to hear it because it's not 3edgy5u emotional.
He's got a decent gig going now. All he has to do is write was half-assed songs about being young, make them sound passable, and then sale a million records. He'll never write another masterpiece, but he'll still sell out huge venues and make bucket loads of cash.
