I never really understood compressors. I have an old Dyna Comp from the mid or late 80's that I don't really care for unless it's cranked

in my mind compressors serve two different functions depending on their use
for guitar rigs, its about tone and sustain. dyna comp adds some nice tone (boosts some low mids and makes the sound a little fatter) considering (i think) it's analog. it also, because it's a compressor, adds some sustain. if you want a shitton of sustain, crank it. if you want some subtle sustain and warmth, put it up a little. idk if the dynas from the 80s had different circuits
that being said, compressors in mastering and mixing are a whole different beast (although i have an alesis nanocompressor i use for live sidechaining)
