I haven't been paying attention to music because of school so post your favorite albums of the year so far that I should check out. Pic related and Life Of Pablo are the only two I've listened to honestly

I've basically been looping the new Lightning in a Twilight Hour since it was released. I think Bobby has really grasped drones and ambient stuff better than he has on past Lightning in a Twilight Hour releases. Plus all the pop music is typically great.

It's a good intermission and very necessary to the album, but I definitely will never sit down and say "hmmm.. I think today I will listen to Shadow Mine"

Imo filler is something that is put into an album to expand it a little and separate the highlights. These songs are ones that very few people will actually say "I'm really in the mood for (x)". Therefore even though it fills these requirements. The fact that it almost splits the EP into 2 acts makes it vital and key to the album's greatness.

Similar to how some people dislike "Houses in Motion" on Remain In Light. It's vital to the album because it gives a clear distinction between the 2 sides of the records but nobody sits down and listens to that one song.

Black star is it. Nothing can beat it. It takes guts to turn your own death into a piece of performance art and I really think that the symbolism through out the album and it's videos, and the intended planning that went into the release dates, and his keeping it all secret so we could witness it at once was incredible. I think the album and all the aforementioned traits will push the medium forward as a whole
>>
>>63840957
Agreed with the Drones, don't see them getting mentioned here but i feel like they should.
>>
Blackstar and Sleep Cycle are both 9/10 for me, hoping more albums of that quality come out.
>>
>>63843531
but beyonce already did that

beyonce > bowie, i guess!
>>
>>63841603
I agree but on your last point 1) Side two of the record starts with Once In A Lifetime on vinyl at least, which totally changed the way I saw the record and 2) Houses In Motion is my most listened to track on that album. With 8 songs (too long to be an EP) none of the tracks are filler imo, even with your definition of the word.
>>
>>63843531
Technically this is my favorite, but the one that's been getting the most play is Frankie Cosmos' new album. Top tier bandcamp core, definitely top 3 this year so far with Bowie and Kendrick
>>
>>63841472
Unlike other albums by Venetian Snares, this album was composed and live recorded entirely on modular synthesizer equipment.[12]

I'm not really familiar with him. How has this made the album sound especially different?
>>
>>63843779
Whoops, I wish I had RiL vinyl. I think it's still fair to say there is a notable change between the styles on the first half and second half. As for your liking of Houses in Motion, I haven't seen a ton of love for it but there are always exceptions I guess.

As for SC, the problem is it isn't 8 songs long. The last 2 are bonus tracks from a band he recorded while he was in Mali. They're hidden on the physical release and not part of the official tracklist.

Also, Shadow Mine is the only song I consider filler, and even then maybe I'm using the wrong word I guess. The right word is intermission. It is sonically very different from the rest of the album, as well as being much shorter, making it a break from the rest of the EP's atmosphere. It isn't so much that I dislike the song (I would never skip it) but that I would never listen to it outside the context of the rest of the album. Almost every other song on the EP is something I could say "I'm in the mood for ..." whereas I would never sit down just to listen to SM. Obviously this is my interpretation of the album and as shown by our differing views on Houses in Motion, we have different views on music, so I suppose it's entirely possible SM could be your favorite song on the EP and you've had it on repeat for the last 3 hours.

He also came here and posted a couple things that were actually really nice. He had been talking about how said he was to see people turning on the other members of AnCo after his album came out (long story if your not already familiar with it and I'm sure someone else can explain it better than I can) on another forum dedicated purely to AnCo. Everyone felt really bad and he rewarded us with a visit. Someone who can greentext it would be much appreciated

I admit I'm still riding high on Charli so that could probably be the only ep of the year and I'd still think it was an above average year. Unfortunately though I cant really put it up against proper albums because of the god awful hannah diamond song. If not though it would be holding its own against some mid-tier full lengths right now.

It's hard to say who the "best musician" is. Panda had formal training and made Person Pitch, Avey made STGSTV, Deak made Sleep Cycle. Geologist is probably the least "musical".
>>
>>63850043
You can listen to it directly from NPR.

I really like it a lot, but it's not his best work. IMO, it's probably his best since Nobel Beast. It doesn't quite live up to Eggs/Armchair/Beast, but it's definitely better than anything he's put out in the past few years.

Stylistically, it's interesting. His lyrical content is much more straight forward than anything he's ever done. He's still got the quirky wordplay, but when you listen to songs you can actually figure out what the fuck he's talking about for a change. The concepts are fairly straight forward.

Musically, it trends towards a little more straight forward song writing, with catchy hooks, verses, and choruses. There's little flashes of his former self, but it's clear that he was going for a different thing here. I'm not going to fault him for trying something different, because he does a pretty good job at it.

Definitely this. Just recently got the gapless version and it's one of the most interesting pieces of work Hecker's ever released. I, like a lot of people, almost dismissed it after the first few listens, but after some persistence, it's obvious that there's an almost overwhelming amount of complexity to each track, each being stunningly composed and filled with some of the richest textures I've ever heard. Stick with this record. Seriously. It's something special.

All music is subjective. There's no way of saying that some genre objectively better than another. You're just a pretentious prick that thinks your opinions are worth a shit

The 1975's 'I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it'.

It's the one I'd have to pick in my 3-way tie of that, TLOP, and Blackstar.

The fact that you rated Collegrove above TLOP and Kendrick is insane, and it completely invalidates the rest of your list.

Really damn good, but not aoty. Feel bad for Iggy though. Most of his friends and musicians from his era are dead or dying. You could really feel that emotion on PPD in some tracks. Hope he holds it together OK and makes more music.
