It's a mood album like most of Radiohead's, you have to be in a very specific mindset to really get it.
For me the Kid A moment was when I was returning home on a bus after fucking up an important exam and How to Disappear Completely started playing.

Huh, I never really thought of this album as pretentious. I mean there are bits of it that are absolutely poppy - the vocal melodies for Cenotaph and Sleep or the funk-driven guitar line lead for Makeshift Swahili or the flat out punk rock of SPQR. Some lovely vocal harmonies as well. To me it was them messing with conventional structures or songwriting in more unconventional ways (Radio Prague and Hi Baku Shyo aside).
Also, you'd find that intense paranoia and dread of the bomb and collapse of society as a consequence was widespread fear amongst the people of that time - regardless of political affiliation.

Illmatic is one of those albums that was completely revolutionary for its time and influenced everything that came after it, but on its own doesn't hold up *quite* as well.
still a 9/10 IMO though. It Ain't Hard To tell is one of the greatest closers for a hip-hop album ever.

Not him, but fucking yeez. Acid, or hallucinogens of any kind, is something completely different from recreational drugs. It's enough to do it once, actually, and you're changed for life. I do them all the time though. Nothing's as profound and beautiful as the psychedelic experience, but it certainly doesn't have to be done more than once (or once every year, for that matter)
