I've personally never been able to get into Nirvana, I can listen to their stuff but it doesn't 'wow' me. Something about it seems too simplistic and lazy (e.g power chords etc). Was it because they weren't very musically proficient that they were only able to produce basic kinda songs?

Anyone else the same?
>>
>>63820501
You're just a pleb.

Sorry friend.
>>
Educate yourself on their background first. They didn't come from a scene that emphasized technical proficiency. Just looking at Nirvana as a mainstream success is seriously half of the story.
>>
>>63820501
>muh teenage angst
>>
Cobain didn't want to look like he was trying too hard

Kim Gordon said he could play really well but didn't want to because it wasn't punk
>>
>>63820501
they are meme shit, IM SO SAD DUDE, LET JUST PUT SOME OVERDRIVE TO IT.
>>
>>63820552
I believe that. He played some decently complicated parts every once and a while and his knowledge of guitar tech implied he studied more than he showed.
>>
>>63820525
I know their background, it doesn't change how I view their music.

>>63820552
>>63820577
He had been playing guitar for a long time so surely he must have been decent. Would have liked to hear his guitar playing at this full potential
>>
>>63820501
nah their songs were legitimately simplistic and lazy (sounding). i do think he worked hard to think up good angsty pop songs.
>>
I respect Cobain as a lyricist. They're not your usual repetitive pop lyrics, they're very poetic and cryptic.
>>
>>63820689
This guy gets it.
>>
>>63820689
To be fair they were only a pop band for 1/3 of their career
>>
>>63820501
They literally have nothing interesting, Nirvana is mediocre-passable core
>>63820689
top kek
>>
>>63820841
Thats exactly my thoughts. Mediocre but tolerable. Why did they have such large commercial success?
>>

Bro their a mediocre band who became legends when Kurt died, that's all.

>>
>>63821099
No it's fucking not. The general public doesn't really rave about and it has two of the best noise rock songs ever written.
>>
Alice in Chains was better in every way
>>
>>63821120
Go to sleep, Dave
>>
>>63820851
They got popular because 1990 was one of the worst years for popular music ever, it was all boring soulless 80s bleedover. Nirvana took a cool underground sound with Kurt's honest songwriting and used good simple riffs with high quality production. It was a breath of fresh air, and once you listen to it enough you begin to understand more of where their lasting power comes from.

>>63821124
I dont disagree, they have a lot of good records.
>>
>>63821072
I wonder if he ripped them off or was coincidence

>>63821077
Generic shredding is worse than Grimes

>>63821078
I've listened to it from start to finish. It was okay, nothing mind blowing

>>63821124
Agreed. Nutshell, Man in the box and Would blow every Nirvana song out of the water
>>
>>63821139
Explain?
>>
>>63821124
>Alice in Chains was better in every way

and The Smashing Pumpkins were better than both of them combined. doesn't discredit what Nirvana accomplished and the quality of some of their work.
>>
>>63821152
>1990 was one of the worst years for popular music ever

Pantera, metallica, Jane's adddiction, U2, the cure, R.E.M., depeche mode, guns n roses are They so Bad?

so you're Dave?

Nirvana is starting point in grunge
Your like this is a thing?

You stay for Soundgarden,Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains

Some people like the pixies but I could never into them I'm not saying they bad but just didn't feel it

Never said I disliked him but Nirvana being the worst of the big 4 is a horrid opinion. In honesty, they're not even comparable to the rest.
>>
>>63821338
Oh, I was just saying for me that's why no one is gonna like exactly what I like

And also if you have not heard of those bands you should go check them out

I was just putting the word out

In case you missed the 90's

And don't listen to any modern rock
>>
>>63821384
I referred to them as the big 4 of course I know who they are

In Utero
>>
>>63821461

That means over overplayed and everywhere and popular?

I think G-eazy takes that title
>>
>>63821468

Out of all of nirvanas cd that's my favorite as well.....

It's feels like they matured as musicians.
>>
>>63820501
It's part of the sound. Unfortunately /mu/ will lie to you and call this lazy. But Kurt Cobain is actually quite famous for his creative progressions and ability to fill the sound for a 3 piece band, something many guitarists often struggle with.

If you aren't able to get into it, fair enough, you kinda have to love the songwriting side of it, rather than musicianship to get into them. Because for the more part, it's about the actual song with them, rather than the ability.

It's music taste bro, if you don't like em, you don't like em. I hate the Smith's, can't get into them, but I also recognise how important they are to modern music and what they did to the industry.
>>
>>63821156
They covered more than a feeling in a concert before lol
>>
>>63821514
Definitely they guitar work is much improved and thicker. But musicianship never mattered much where they came from and that's (one of) the difference(s) between them and the other "grunge" bands.

The superior album coming through, fags.
>>
>>63821518
i can sign off on this. Cobain's songwriting has been compared to Lennon's and i think it's fair. even Dylan admired 'Poly'.
>>
>>63821518
I'm not knocking anyone who likes them, I understand they are one of the most popular bands of all time. Just seeing if I'm the only one who can't into their music.

>>63821527
Wasn't that at Reading as a dig at those that accused him of ripping the song off?
>>
>>63821569
reviewers have said that 'Aneurysm' is their best song but i dont get why
>>
>>63821586
never heard that before, but it is definitely up there. It sounds like the most sincere version of whatever they tried to do in Nevermind to me, tbqh.

I think Downer is their best song.
>>
>>63821572
I understand that, just sayin. If you don't like em, you don't like em.

Honestly if you want to get into em. Listen to one of their songs like 50 times in a row, listening to the same song over and over trains your brain to identify with the sounds and progressions, that's how you can force yourself to like someone. It's just how the brain works, but again it's pointless.
>>
They look like fucking dorks in suits
>>
it's kind of amazing that this white trash couple was at the forefront of music tabloid culture for awhile. whenever i see a documentary of kurt and courtney its just striking at how non-manufactured they are, even tho that was part of the 'image' and therefore technically manufactured.
>>
>>63821856
Neither of them were white trash. They just picked up the aesthetic due to their circumstances.
>>
>>63821124
>>63821209
They're all great but Soundgarden beats them all.
>>
>>63821338
>Never said I disliked him but Nirvana being the worst of the big 4 is a horrid opinion.
Nah, SG and AIC were just better, and PJ had more versatility. I love Nirvana too but them being someone's least favorite of the big four is completely understandable.
>>
>>63821911
God, /mu/ is really at its worst right now.
>>
>>63820501
bleach is good
>>
>>63821921
I know what you mean man. I remember when I actually thought Nirvana was the best of the big four too.
>>
I remember when my cousins smoked me out in the car and played Nirvana Bleach. I only listened to some of the older stuff. Bleach was a completely different machine. But I still haven't listened to Nirvana at all. Don't really care anymore.
>>
>>63821959
They are. You grow out of theatric vocals and into good songwriting.
>>
>>63820501
I can only tell you that this band might be one of those groups that will grow on you before you realize the ability they actually had. Kurt had personality and a lot of ambition, that's what made the group so appealing. I would always recommend anybody getting into nirvana to always listen to unplugged first then incesticide bleach never mind in utero
>>
>>63821976
I remember high school too.
>>
>>63822028
Where are you now? Freshman in uni? You'll graduate one day
>>
>>63822066
Past that stage where I thought Nirvana was the best of the four, that's for sure. Maybe some just get there faster than others.

>>
>>63822200
>That's exactly what you're doing to Nirvana.
Oh for goodness sake I love Nirvana. It's just too fucking easy with how butthurt fanboys get when someone doesn't think they were the best band of the bunch. It's always their fans who cry the loudest.
>>
>>63822250
My bad bro. I'm just a sensitive person and I love the band too much. And defend them a lot on contrarian /mu/.
>>
>>63820501
Nirvana is just a punk rock band, they don't write progresssive stuff, they believe in the pop song format. And they do it well
I think they are important because you look at what mainstream rock was in the 80s Poison, Bon jovi. Poser stuff, with solo, and sophisticated look. mostly concerned about fucking chicks.
And there come Nirvana, normal look, simple songs, authentic, true anger.
Play Smells like teen spirit, breed or territorial pissing in concert, everybody will jump. Power chords or not. This works, no need to look further.

This is just like in 70s with all the progressive bands doing 20min sophisticated songs and conceptual albums, while a lot of kids just wanted to release their anger, and there comes the sex pistols.
>>
Pearl Jam are objectively fucking trash.
>>63821886 and Soundgarden aren't that great either.
>>
>>63822269
It's all good, man.

>>63822458
>Soundgarden aren't that great either.
You're funny.
>>
i think 'in utero' is one of the best album in punk rock history but it's just about taste mate, if you can't get into 'em, well you don't need to.
>>
>>63822715
black hole sun is their only good song
>>
>>63820552
HAHAHAHA YOU FUCKING WHAT??

Kurt Cobain literally believed playing good was for poseurs and faggots? Did he actually think playing bad make him more punk and therefore better? what a fucking joke. Either way Nirvana isn't anything special.
>>
>>63822931
It just wasn't the kind of music he liked/ wanted to make. You're putting extra on it.
>>
>>63822929
I saw Soundgarden live and they were extremely boring. Black hole sun is there only decent song and that's pretty mediocre for a 90s alt rock hit at best
>>
Kurt Cobain is not the best guitarist of the world but he's one of the most important
He show that you can rock like no one without having study the guitar for 10years.
So many young guys started to play guitar because of him
