thinking about a different way to lay it out. genres are not strictly limited to levels, but serve as examples.

Level 1: Strictly melody driven
>Radio pop, grunge revival, indie rock & folk, popular hip-hop, some EDM, most metal
Level 2: Strictly beat driven
>instrumental & old-school hip-hop, reggae & dub, hard bop, deep house
Level 3: Melody & beat driven
>IDM, blues, funk, dancehouse, prog rock, psychedelic rock, math rock
Level 4: Timbre & melody driven:
>noise rock, acid house, ambient, shoegaze, sludge/drone metal, punk
Level 5: Timbre & beat driven:
>some krautrock, industrial, crust punk
Level 6: Purely timbre driven:
>harsh noise, microsound, glitch

Pink Floyd's DSOTM is one of the best selling album ever. So imo even a "normal" person could consider entry level prog as mainstream, unless you're in highschool.

Dark Side of the Moon is accessible, but is Third?

Well, i was talking more along the lines of more advanced prog, like KC and Gryphon.
>>

That's why I said "entry level prog". Of course bands like Soft Machine ain't accessible. But prog bands like Yes or Genesis are far to be weird.

I like that idea.

The levels aren't clear-cut though — imagine a microtonal contemporary classical piece with a typical 4/4 time signature for instance, it would be "melody driven" but still be an acquired taste. Conversely, some people like to listen to edited nature recordings (purely timbre-driven) in the background, just to relax.

>>63802453
... Why Bach?

>>63802494
Nice, I agree with most of those.

Schlager is definitely level 1 if you live in Germany, I'm even tempted to put it at a negative level — most of it is awful if you care about the music itself in the slightest, it mostly exists because of its social function. I don't think many people could bear to listen to an entire schlager record and actually enjoy it. Unlike piano sonatas, soul, hip hop etc which are music most people can enjoy without effort.

I find ambient completely effortless to get into, it's interesting to see that people react differently to it. Had trouble getting into glam rock though.

... I must confess I still don't know what trap is.

Theyre not really listening to it as music when they do that though. There's a difference in the way fans of yoga rain forest soundtracks think about field recordings as compared to fans of something like lopez
>>
>>63803115
J.S. Bach's music seems to appeal to a sense of perfection itself, so it seems like something someone who was just totally detached from any social bias would listen to

I feel like "normal pleb" is a misleading category, I don't take this chart to be about how accessible/inaccessible the music is or patrician/pleb. it's just what weird vs normal people listen to, barring the fact that they probably all mostly listen to the same thing

>>63803299
>>
>>63803431
A lot of it is good, though... What did you listen to?
>>
>>63803172 >>63803202
I see what you mean, but that aim towards perfection is precisely one of the things that make Bach appeal to a wide audience in my opinion. Although only few people who listen to Bach will hear exactly why it's brilliant, it's easy to hear that it is beautiful.

My mom has little interest in music, she doesn't like most popular genres or anything that's "noisy" or "weird", she hates contemporary classical but she loves Bach's Christmas oratorio for instance. I think lots of people are like that.

I think most popular music is popular precisely because it aims towards "pure" universal ideals — beauty, desire, harmony, love, bliss etc. On the other hand, music that voluntarily gets away from universal ideals and is harsh, dissonant etc. will usually only appeal to a niche audience. Of course people who themselves want to be "perfect" in every way can be seen as weirdos, but it's not the same with music.
>>
>>63803442
stuff like It's Gonna Rain is definitely minimalism but that's not the majority of the genre. Most of Steve Reich, Philip Glass, and Terry Riley isn't that hard to grasp
>>
>>63803345
>>63802453
>>63802494
Don't forget New Complexity.
>>
>>63803470
I agree. I suppose Bach would also fall under the category of "radio classical," and so he would be placed both in the pleb and most "patrician" category on my chart. If it wouldn't defeat the purpose of making a spectrum, I'd be more accurate and list other things in multiple categories
>>
>>63803299
Do you think it should be higher or lower? It's pretty broad like any genre, I guess. wouldn't be higher than level 3 because it's always rhythmically appealing, at least. But some is very accessible and popular
>>
>>63803431
Level 6 is not "what any music listener should get to enjoy once they've listened to the previous levels". Level 6 means it's an acquired taste, hard to get into, not for everyone. Nobody's trying to trick you, at least not with these charts. Nobody even claims deeper levels are the best or most rewarding.
>>
>>63803525
>>63803496
I personally have virtually never met anyone in the 20-40 age range who listens to Music for 18 Musicians or Trains from Reich. Putting it on equal footing with Trance and black metal is a bit 'unfair' imo.
