what order do you guys eq and compress in? do you do it to all your tracks in a song? what about on the master or grouped tracks or buses or return channels?

also any good resources on compression would be appreciated, it's definitely something i've been neglecting for too long
>>
>>63779179
>what order do you guys eq and compress in?
depends, for example if the compressor pumps too much because of low frequency stuff you obviously shelf that down in front and pull it back up after, often you need both pre and post eq

>do you do it to all your tracks in a song?
when needed. some signals need dynamic processing, some don't. you can't generalize that

>what about on the master or grouped tracks or buses or return channels?

compression on busses is the main thing you need to do to 'blend' certain elements together, for example a bus for all rhythmic elements, another one for all harmonic elements, another one for all vocals ... compressing each of them to taste can do wonderful things
compressing the master is an obvious thing needed for many genres, you can't get enough clean loudness from a main bus limiter most of the times, shit needs to be carefully compressed first

On the master track I usually put the EQ first to increase the high frequencies, then use a compressor, then limiter.

Simple (I think) question here.

I've been recording on a 4 track cassette recorder for the past few months. Along with it I have a simple behringer mixer, and a laptop. Now when I mix the tracks on the 4 track it sounds great but when I try to record it on the laptop it sounds like shit. I'm guessing its cause my laptop just has 1 1/8 inch input for mics so the stereo sound is being recorded and smushed into a mono jack.

So i guess my question is how do I record stereo tracks on my laptop so that the left and right channels have the same dynamic as it sounds on the 4 track. I figure I would need some sort of usb interface but have no idea which one or what type.
>>

I hope it's okay to ask this here.

I'm about to start recording a podcast worth a friend of mine. Of course we'll have a long way to go before we ever get to a studio quality show, but we have to start somewhere. I'm looking for any recommendations on programs that are good for recording and editing audio? Ease of use, since we're brand new to this. Hell, finding something that will let us record two mics at once (usb) would be a start.

Any advice or suggestions would be great.

>>
>>63786518
If that's your setup, I'd recommend some cheap acoustic paneling, it's not hard to find it used if craigslist is active in your area. It makes a world of difference in vocal recordings, especially podcasts.

If you're just learning to record and edit audio, I recommend looking into Audacity. It's easy to learn with, and gets people started, plus it's free.

To record two mics at once, you'll want an audio interface. Most these days have two mic inputs on the front panel, they look a bit odd because they accept both XLR (mic) and 1/4" (instrument) plugs. Simple 2in/2out audio interfaces are in the $100-150 range.
>>
>>63786518
For recording software, just go with Audacity. It's free and gets the job done. Lots of people use it so you'll have plenty of guides etc. online.
Now as for your USB mics, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Maybe it'll werk?

The /prod/ way would be to get an audio interface with two audio inputs (Focusrite scarlett 2i2 is a really common rec) and two cheap condenser mics. I can understand if that's too much for you, though. Maybe someone else knows better.
>>
>>63786518
Audacity is freeware and pretty much covers everything you need

to my knowledge you can't run two usb mics over your onboard soundcard.
You'll need an audio interface but that won't work with usb mics unfortunately.
>>
>>63786786
So sorry, forgot "pic unrelated" - not my setup at all. Mine's in a large living room with a PC, a USB headset and a boom USB mic (cheap). And I'll look into audio interfaces. Though, my mics both run through USB?

>>63786802
>>63786866

Audacity is so great, but can't do 2 inputs. Also, I took a couple hours last night trying my best to "edit" some audio from my mic to get a good sound (trying to remove some constant whining that's present, "cleaning up" the audio, making it sound nice - but I have no idea what I'm doing and nothing seemed to work). I think I need some help just taking a voice recording and making it "good".
>>
>>63787164
yeah, I missed the USB port
you should be able to select more than one device to record with in audacity
>>
I'm not new to music production, but I'm definitely new to electronic music (bought KORG Volca Keys in January, got my Volca Beats about a month ago), and I wanted some advice: should I pick up a solid mixer or an arduinoboy/something else to help with sequencing? I've rapidly outgrown the 16 step sequencer(s) on my volcas.

For reference, I don't typically record DI into my DAW. I don't know if it's the quality of the cables incl. with the KORGs or whether they're just going to be noisey without an external mixer but it's always a pain in the ass to De-noise/EQ out the shitty high freqs that I capture going DI. Could it be the interface itself? I have a scarlett 2i2 & a TASCAM (forgot the model, but it's what I use to record my band, it's with the drummer atm) .

For the Beats, at least, I vastly prefer running the box into one of my guitar amps and recording it into Cubase with a mic or two. It sounds so much...fuller.

Any tricks to getting the drums in my DI mixes to sound better? I know that I'm sort of limited with the single output on the Beats...

here's a quick thing that I recorded yesterday so that I wouldn't forget the idea: https://soundcloud.com/maxwojo/so-so

I couldn't really figure out how to EQ the drums without them being overbearing in the low end.

and now a recording of some babby's first house music w/ the beats through my peavey classic 50 / think I recorded this with an SM57, I vastly prefer the sound I get on this track: https://soundcloud.com/maxwojo/whos-to-say

Is it just practice?
>>
>>63788012
What is EQ anyways? Is it just filtering software? Like cutsoff certain frequencies
>>
>>63788170
? I can't tell if you're trolling my post or not but on the off chance that this post is made in good faith:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equalization_(audio)

EQ refers to the process of cutting & boosting frequencies to achieve the desired sound.

depends on workflow. Generally I would say no. It doesn't do anything that can't be achieved using softsynths and thorough automation. it offers a large diversity of sounds, and is quite flexible, but it offers no novel form of synthesis nor particularly impressive audio quality. digital hardware is always tricky because so much of it can be replaced with VSTs. that said, most of the hardware synths i have owned have been digital, and i usually went after them because of weird audio textures or their workflow. Elektron is super powerful, especially when combined with other gear, and when playing live, so just weigh how it would fit into your set up. But otherwise, the monomachine offers nothing super special in my opinion, other than being compact, flexible, and i guess packing a lot of stuff into one device.
>>
anyone here have opinions on distortion/overdrive processors for synths? a lot of distortion processors for guitars are just WAY too heavyhanded and explosive to apply to synths. softer fuzziness and adding grit and sharper edges is sometimes what I am looking for. I've used cassettes as distortion units, but it's a but inflexible, both in terms of studio signal flow and actually control over the tone. I've considered tube distortions, because you can saturate nicely without necessarily going 100% on it, but yeah, any thoughts on synths + distortion pedals?
>>
>>63789508
thank you, perfect answer
>>
>>63789583
Synths and mic'd amps are great together.
>>
>>63789583
I haven't found a distortion pedal for my synths that I really like yet either. I have a couple of boutique (read: hand-me-down one-off pedals made by some dude in his garage that my uncle gave me a few years back) distortion/fuzz/OD pedals but they always compress the signal from my synths into shit. Honestly, I get the best distortion running my gear through my Orange Micro Dark terror...but then it's a very specific sound that I can't really setup live.

My friend swears by the Boss DS-1 but he makes a much different sort of music than I do, and even then I think he hypes it up more than he actually uses it. Reminds me, I should go get my pedal back from him.

My goal is to get on Moe Shop's level.

Though my biggest issue is overthinking things.

>>
>>63790005
the DS-1 is too... "cold" in my opinion. It has interesting qualities, such as a certain "bounciness" to the sound, but it's just not the kind of saturation and grit that I want. it scoops a little hard imo. i realize we are talking purely about taste which i can't really convey, but i feel like the DS-1 is too low hanging of a fruit to suggest, funnily enough. that said, the blues driver in the same pedal range is amazing. subtler with better low end response.
>>
>>63790086
Yeah, I know what you mean, it's so common that it's almost a non-starter for anyone that's already attempting to apply their taste.

Interesting thoughts on the bluesdriver, I'll have to see if I can test one out. Never wanted one in my guitar's pedal chain, I'll laugh if one ends up after my synths.

Too right - Ultravox/Visage-era Billy Currie and John Foxx both ripped the fuck out of ARP Odyssey (and OSCar) synths through guitar amps. Magazine's Dave Formula and Tubeway Army's Chris Payne used a fair bit of that sound too, although they did all sound a bit on the hard sync/aggressive side.

Probably Tony Banks (early pre-Mellotron Genesis had nothing but a Hammond and a Hohner Pianet N overdriven through Leslie cabs) and JMJ are good references for more gentle variants.

>>63789583

Try Peavey ReValver for a more controllable sim of the above, or Amplitube which has Leslie cabs too IIRC.

How did OPN make the synths from 0:00 to 0:30 sound very "authentic" stereo-wise, if that makes sense? They almost sound like acoustic instruments recorded from a room based on the headspace, but I'm pretty sure they're just synths.

>>63794501
I'm an amateur myself so this may be totally wrong, but the kick sounds like it has a fair bit of compression, with a not too short attack to keep the transient. Probably parallel compression, but not sure.

There's definitely a synthesized component to the kick, since the sub-bass seems pretty powerful and tight. Might be 100% synthesized, or maybe a sub-bass synth layered over a real kick sample.

The kick also has a little bit of a decay/tail to it, which gives it more of a groove.

And I'm pretty sure everything is sidechained to the kick. The other instruments are panned (except maybe the hat, though it may be panned slightly... not sure), and the kick is in mono.
>>
>>63794722
It's a square/pulse wave with portamento. I think there may be an LFO giving it a bit of pulse width modulation, and there might be a tiny bit of detuning, though not sure about both of those.
