Pro tip: You can't

Reposting because I'm blind

Picked up a dirty, rusty 2007 Bullet for a first guitar, and I am looking through basic mods and deep-cleaning while I wait for an amp.

two questions:
-Can I find new pickguard screws by just taking one to a hardware store, or are they some proprietary shit?

-If shielding a strat's cavity and pickguard, and adding a direct ground instead of looping haphazardly between components reduces noise and increases performance noticeably, why doesn't Fender/Squier spend the extra few dollars per guitar on doing it from the factory? Is it not as good as it sounds? Is "the strat sound" unshielded and noisy?

You guys

What is a decent enough bass practice amp? My friend just gave me his old jazz Squier. Apparently after all these years he realized he hates the bass guitar. Bass equipment is an unknown to me. What brands should I look for? I just want something small so I can noodle around in my apartment.

Yeah, it is. It's got 2 truss rods, so that's kind of a bitch. The 2 lower strings can't really intonate perfectly but it's fine because they're so low that you can't really hear them anyway.

I run it through a Marshall MA100H, Hartke HA410 and Gallien Neo 115. >>63767282 is me as well. I use Kalium strings, the highest is a .008 and the lowest is a .124.

Yeah there are Fender(tm) screws. You can get a bag of them on ebay for not too much. I think they're just zinc or stainless 1/2 inch wood screws. Ace hardware probably has your hookup.

>shielded cavity/guard
I'm indifferent to ground loops and haphazard ground wiring. See star-ground if you want to be refined about everything. Guitar's signal is so high impedance, that loops won't effect each other.

Fender shields their guard. They don't shield their bodies and yes this makes the guitars noisier.

It's in the name.

Overdrive drives your sound, and adds a transparent crunch to it.
Distortion literally distorts your signal and gives it an even more crunchy sound, driving it even more.

String tension has to equal spring tension.

If it's pulling up, add a spring or adjust the thing in the back(can't remember what it's called).
Usually if you're using heavier strings, you may need to add a spring

You usually just need to screw the claw in more. You very rarely need to add more springs.

The Eternal Guitarist's Stuggle:
>man i suck
>in a year i'll be good enough
>get way better in one year than you could possibly have imagined
>still not good enough

anon, if you can make good sounding music in the genre you like, then you are already good enough.

That's why metal and shredfags are never happy, they always think how it sounds shit, maybe if they could play faster it would sound good, but by definition it will always sound shit.

Don't aspire to be as good as other guitarists, aspire to be as good as other musicians

I genuinely agree. His prowess to combine advanced techniques and manipulate them to his ends is like nothing I've ever seen. I don't understand how someone with his musical vocabulary hasn't tapped into how dull his original work can be.

>>63773402
This. My own anecdotal evidence. I was awhile ago into tech metal, but had no business trying to imitate it. The lead tricks were beyond my means even after months of practice they showed nearly zero signs of improving. Some of the bands I was in were unintentional jokes.

I eventually settled into a rhythm role trying to focus on chords and keeping things interesting and very simple. Even my technical abilities have come up secondary to just trying to write and understand good music.

Ask the seller what tubes are in it. If it's things like EL34, 6L6, EL84 then you know it wasn't made in the 1920s because those tubes weren't around then.

If it was made in the 20s then the chances are you can't get replacement tubes for it any more.

As it's a large amp I'd guess it has a push-pull output stage, again that means it's not from the 20s as they would all be low powered single ended amps back then.

It's not from the 1920s. Guy's full of shit.

For those delicious buzzing dried-out filter caps, the leaky blocking caps and the melted insulation on the transformer that combine to make a shit-sounding death trap of an amplifier.

Plus very old amps don't have mains isolation transformers, they have a rectifier connected directly to the AC mains supply, a great way to electrocute yourself.

Transparent finishes don't tend to look good on RG550s. The Basswood they were using at the time isn't even slightly nice to look at.
