Now Playing:
>Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)

Here's the thing with Captain Beefheart for me. Once I "got" Trout Mask Replica, it definitely became one of my favourite albums of all time. And that's a bit of a problem going into his (and the magic band's) other albums, because there's a lot of expectation of "weirdness that works".

I didn't really get the same thrill in Safe as Milk, which I acknowledge wouldn't have been as experimental as TMR, being the debut from the band.

But, halfway through Shiny Beast, I can definitely say he's redeemed himself with some pretty good music which holds both the enjoyability and quirks that I liked so much in TMR.

What I do wonder about though, is the positioning of Trout Mask Replica in his discography –it was only two years after the debut, so it wasn't as though they needed a ton of development to reach such a peak. But after it, it there is no album of his that reached such a polarising and celebrated status –nothing is as weird.

Why is that? Was it Zappa's presence as producer, or the excessive rehearsals, or something else?

Or, alternatively, am I getting something wrong – was there something from the Magic Band that was weirder than TMR?
>>
>>63756267
it was because he couldn't hear the band playing while recording vocals
>>
>>63756267

>>
>>63756297
Is it only that? Even if everything was in time, TMR is so much louder and insane. Something like "Pena", for example –nothing like that was ever done, was it? (I'm ready to be proven completely wrong)

>>63756308
Will do
>>
>>63756267
Here's the history
Started out as a blues cover band.
Beefheart wanted to get weirder, got caught up in a bunch of contracts with record companies cause he didn't know how to manage himself and nobody wanted him.
Zappa basically rescued him and gave him complete creative freedom with TMR. Beefheart tortured everyone and made no money back with the album.
Gave it one more go with Lick My Decals before throwing in the towel and just trying to appeal to a more general audience.
Even though they had a minor hit beefheart and the band never achieved the success they desired.
By the late 70's he had a cult following so he decided to return to a more avant-garde sound and made two albums before retiring.

nothing is as weird as tmr. And Zappa had nothing to do with it. It was just the Captain at full crazy.
>>
>>63756472
Thanks
Do you know of any good documentaries or books on the captain?

herb kid vs. Warm Sofa

I had never listened to Dalek before but from what I've heard about them this seems to be a bit different from their prior work. I liked the feeling it was able to maintain across the 45 minute track but aside from the sections that veered heavily into post-rock it never rose to the occasion for me
Warm Sofa picked some ambient that was nice and relaxing yet focused and melancholy
Warm Sofa wins
herb kid and Warm Sofa have now finished the first round and both have a record of two wins and two losses

>coil - live three
best one so far, this time we get a song from horse rotorvator, and a couple from backwards, which sound phenomenal live. the two songs from in the dark are pretty average, but hearing john's vocal deliveries and "intellectual" phrases in between songs (i.e. if the actor stops acting, does the movie become real?) makes for great listening.

I don't really hate him but just look at this shit:

https://rateyourmusic.com/collection/Montie_Ray/r5.0

He literally has the taste of any crosley-owning Tumblr girl but is a "redpilled" /pol/man who supports Donald Trump and says "nigger" in real life. Imagine hearing a white kid from the suburbs say "nigger" out loud and talk about how much they like Oasis in the same breath. It makes me want to kill myself honestly.

He's pretty much like ever other 15 year old on /mu/. Again, I don't hate him and I don't condone the bullying that /mu/ has done, but he practically doxxed himself so it's hard to feel bad for him.

HOLY FRIG TRIPS :DDD

iirc he linked his RYM on his Facebook, so all you had to do was google his RYM and you could find his unblocked Facebook, which is the most retarded thing ever. (Might not be entirely true, just what I heard.)The thought of seeing a family member look through my RYM makes me cringe.

I'm kind of a hipocrate since I've linked my last.fm and RYM, but very few of my friends even know about my last.fm, and only 2 close friends I think know about my RYM, but they also have one.

A word that the most cancerous subgroup of right wingers uses to describe themselves. It's basically filled with "politically incorrect" people, Trump supporters, possibly conspiracy theorists, basically just anyone who is really politically engaged without understanding a single thing about politics. They're also potentially proto-fascists, but it's really hard to nail them down, they're idiots of any kind in the right wing spectrum (bar anarcho-capitalists and shitty libertarians maybe, that's another brand of idiotic)

Turns out once these guys learned how to play their instruments, they became nothing but an ok 80s indie rock act. There's some sax here, and some songs would make for fine punk songs were they played with more noise and ferocity, but otherwise nothing stands out. A fine listen, if nothing else. 2.5

Continuation of >>63756267
>Captain Beefheart - Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)
4 / 5 || strong 8 / 10

It was the instrumentation that was best about this record, for me. A lot of the non-vocal sections –a good example is the track Ice Rose –have securely harmonic melodies, but create interest during them in the way that instruments will often play in polyphony, but with "disregard" to the other instruments –the separate lines of melodies may harmonise to the key, but stand out unique from every other line by ignoring the whole concept of complimenting one another.

This kind of thing reminds me of a lot of Frank Zappa's stuff, unsurprisingly, in the way that the music often doesn't sound very serious, and usually sounds very weird, but is still very clever in the way it is constructed.

I also appreciated the lyrics, too. Especially in Harry Irene, which has a ~super~ catchy melody underlying the Captain telling a story.

Here's a review for this guy >>63756267:
Modulation diatonic interval, rallentando syncopation transposition. Sequence da capo dissonance.

very glad i was too busy to /daily/ last thread.

also nyar we kinda doppelgangers

Weezer - Weezer [White Album] (2016)
>power pop, alternative rock

I'm still an unabashed fan of Weezer's first two records, they're definitely a guilty pleasure of mine. Absolutely rock-solid pop records, and despite the fact that the lyrics get a bit cringe-worthy at times ("Pink Triangle" and "Across the Sea"), Pinkerton's confessional nature is phenomenal. So naturally, as a fan of Weezer's first two records, I absolutely hate everything the band has put out since, save for a few songs here and there. EWBAITE was a step in the right direction, but there was still an aura of genericness that turned me off a lot. I was mixed coming into this album based on the singles. "LA Girlz" and "Do You Wanna Get High?" were really great, and harkened back to the Pinkerton-era with their melodies and instrumentation, but "Thank God for Girls" is the absolute worst thing ever. And these are honestly the only tracks that stand out on this album. Luckily, "Thank God for Girls" is the only truly bad track, but the rest save for 4 or so songs with /great/ melodies are just forgettable. But this is still a definite step further in the right direction, and I love the summer vibes of it. Its passable, nearly good pop rock. I can't extol its virtues too much, but it does what it does well, which is something I can't say for most of Weezer's output.

2.0+

Cleoma Falcon - A Cajun Music Classic (1983)
>cajun

Its great, but it'd be a lot greater if there was more variation, like honestly every song here sounds the same. Luckily the songwriting is on point, Falcon's vocals are great, if a bit nasally and too childish at times, and the guitar playing is terrific. I'd certainly like to look more into cajun after listening to this, any recs?

>Ali Hassan Kuban - Walk Like a Nubian
How does a Nubian walk? I would like to learn the Nubian way of walking, for if it's only half as fun as this record, that's still a whole lot more fun than the pleasure I usually experience as a result of the art of walking. 3.5+

he'll yea boomin' beats. 4.0

>Aпopєa - Ha pєкaхъ Baвл҃нcкыхъ
It's like industrial post-apocalyptic church music or some shit. Also, it's under 20 minutes, why aren't you listening to it already? 3.5

>jackie-O Motherfucker - Flags of the Sacred Harp
A lot more relaxing and comfy than I expected, super nice post-rocky folky stuff with a lot ofd roning segments that are actually not as good as the folky bits (which are great!!) but still good. Basically it's like Sunburned Hand of the Man if that band ever bothered writing actual songs instead of noodling around a bit. This is like the noodling + actual melodies and nice stuff. 3.5+

>Raphe Malik - 21st Century Texts
Talking Cat Bob likes some obscure album and nobody gives a shit: part 3. Ok so honestly this was all fine "jazz" and all, in fact it was entirely enjoyable, but I don't know if I care enough to return to it. It lacks something that clearly differentiates it from the abundance of free jazz out there. It's entirely possible I missed some subtleties though, it's night and I just can't be fucked to give it a relisten rn so you'll have to do with a snarky remark about TCB's taste. 2.5+

I didn't like Thank God for Girls either, but why do people hate it with such a passion? I understand the lyrics are terrible and those (hallejajsu christe)'s were fucking cringeworthy. its very rhythmic and not very melodic at all, save for the chorus. and weezer's strongest suit is always the melodies, and even the chorus melody is kinda eh here. and i don't care for the vocals, which is funny because I think that White overall had the best vocals on a weezer album since pinkerton.

Townes Van Zandt - Our Mother the Mountain (1969)
>singer/songwriter, country, contemporary folk

Still good, mainly because of Van Zandt's incredibly gripping vocals and his songwriting chops, but a lot of the immediacy and emotional potency from his s/t is lost here. The problem lies mainly in the production, its far too busy. My least favorite thing about his s/t was the superfluous instrumentation, and that's amped up here, adding strings to nearly every occassion no matter how hokey they might be. If it was just Van Zandt and his guitar? Best thing ever, but as it is I'm not all too stunned.

Songs: Ohia - The Lioness (2000)
>singer/songwriter, contemporary folk

This is everything I wanted in a Songs: Ohia record. Its not too meandering like Didn't It Rain, its not too Neil Young-y like The Magnolia Electric Co., its a short, to the point, absolutely emotionally draining singer/songwriter record, and its absolutely fantastic. From the second I put this on to the second it finished I felt like I couldn't breathe, its so incredibly tense and emotionally intense. The slowcore-inspired instrumentation with its sparseness intertwines so well with Molina's emotive voice, oftentimes straining and cracking under the weight of his words. And its fucking depressing as shit! The instrumentation itself is downbeat and despondent, but compared with the vocals, the lyrics, the use of dynamics ("TIGRESS" MY GOD), its the most soul crushing thing ever. And its bloody amazing.

Angel Olsen - Strange Cacti (2010)
>lo-fi indie, avant-folk, singer/songwriter

The entirety is pretty much overshadowed by the absolutely phenomenal "If It's Alive, It Will", but its all stlil pretty good. The lo-fi recording style and the tape hiss does make this less enjoyable than it should be, but Olsen's melodies and soothing voice are still incredibly apparent, and the recording style does bring a certain sense of intenseness and eerieness to the songs, which adds a lot. This was surprisingly great, and I'm sad that her other stuff isn't like this or else I'd check it out a lot sooner.
