It's some kind of Chinese-European fusion folk music, the chap was Asian but raised in Belgium or Austria or some such and it inspired his music. One of the songs was titled something like 'Iligal' or 'Elegal' but my pitiful google-fu has failed me.

Synthwave, both musicially and aesthetically, is pretty much the 80s as interpreted by millenials and other people who never actually experienced the decade as adults.
It's a weird kind of romanticism that you see in movies like Drive or expressed by younger people who are into movies like Terminator and Escape from New York.

Strange how that works. I was a little kid in the 80s, never felt a connection, though I do like some music from it, but shit like this music or gta vice city give me such a strange feelgood vibe.
Though I also sometimes get that with the 60s.

The synthwave camp consists roughly of three types, the girly new-wave/synthpop kind that Electric Youth does, the more raw sci-fi kind that Perturbator and Kavinsky does and the more cheesy 80s Miami Vice kind that Miami 1984 does. These can be of course combined with each other in some way or another or take inspiration from elsewhere like Anime in some cases.
The first kind was popularized by Drive, the second kind was popularized by Hotline Miami and sort of follow in the footsteps of scif-fi soundtracks like the one from the first Terminator movie while the last kind seems like it was inspired directly by GTA Vice City.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Your Funeral.... My Trial, 1986 (mp3 320kbps CBR)
Cave's third release with the Seeds finds him stepping almost completely clear of his early noise rock/twisted post-punk phase. The music has become more varied and organic without sacrifising their dark and moody edge.
Songs become more story-focused and we find some of the most poignant lyrics Cave's ever penned (The Carny and Long Time Man being some of my all-time favourites from him), but we still get the odd Birthday-Party-esque symbolist/impressionist lyric accompanied by rightly chaotic music (Scum and Hard On For Love for example).
There are glimpses at the softer, piano-centric sound of The Good Son and even the indie rock sensibilities of Henry's Dream. Truly a turning point for his career and a key album to understand the Seeds' musical developement.

So, let's get this out of the way quickly: There was nothing in the world more extreme, more aggressive, more violent than Kreator when they released their first full-length in glorious 1985. Only two (two!) releases that can compete are Sepultura's Bestial Devastation (which I consider to be the first Death Metal release ever, sorry Possessed) and, to a noticeably lesser extent, the releases of the other two great Teutonic Thrash bands. Not even Bathory and Celtic Frost, raw, vile and violent as they were back then, had something of this calibre to offer (still The Return and To mega Therion have their own, unmatched, indisputable say in extreme metal)
This borderline-death-metal hellish teutonic thrash had no parallels back then. Riffs upon riffs upon riffs punctuated by relentless, loud drumming and one of the most unique, desperate, ANGRY vocals to ever grace extreme metal. This is a must for anyone who cares even slightly about the more extreme branch of metal. Listen or DIE.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds: The Firstborn Is Dead (1985) and The Good Son (1990) (320kbps mp3 CBR)
Both dramatically different, the first is possibly their darkest album (out of their first decade in activity, at least). It continues the chaotic obscure mess of their debut in a more focused manner and it's pretty much the first place where we get a taste of Cave's more story-focused lyrics and his calmer, deeper singing voice in contrast with his shrieks and spasms (both are great, obviously).
The Good Son is one of the most peaceful efforts by the band. Focus falls mostly on piano, which gives the album less of a goth/alt rock feel and more of a dark cabaret vibe. Cigarette smoke in the air, dim lamps on top of bars filthy with peanuts and beer rings ruining the upholstery. Strangely enough, one of the more positive and happy Seeds albums.
