I have to ask out of curiosity. Do you guys consider your taste in pop music a guilty pleasure and how does it mesh with what else you listen to?
I was just thinking how funny it is to switch over from something like Converge to Marina and the Diamonds, and genuinely like both when they are so very different. I feel like I'm one of the only people I know in real life who would admit to liking Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, and Marina in addition to things like hip hop or metal or jazz. Do people just hide it for masculinity's sake?

i dont really "hide" the fact that i listen to and enjoy pop. I talk to my close friends about it sometimes. I mainly listen to rap though, Drake and Young Thug are my favorite rap artists and i was highly anticipating SS3 and it is a great mixtape, but ive found myself listening to Aurora's debut album more than SS3. I have no shame in listening to pop music in front of people either, and honestly i think its pretty accepted - at least amongst the normie crowd.

I've never really had a conversation with guys about pop music though aside from my closest friends.
My tastes range from old school hip hop like Wu-tang to more contemporary stuff like J Cole, Danny Brown, etc. Death metal like Septic Flesh or bands like Sylosis, Hardcore punk / rock bands like Converge or Kvelertak. Indie rock like the Mountain Goats, The World is a Beautiful Place & I am no longer afraid to die, etc etc and in all the conversations I've had with people, they seem to steer clear of pop.

i have a wide variety of tastes as well and i know its retarted to say "i listen to everything" but its kindof true, except i cant really tolerate metal anymore. I was a big metal fan in highschool but it doesnt appeal to me anymore. I enjoy EDM, jam bands, rap, pop, and lots of things in between. I often wonder what the people who despise pop and top 40 music listen to. I like to believe they think their taste is superior in a pretentious kind of way and think they are too good to listen to top 40, when in my opinion - there are some great top 40/pop songs at this current point in time.

No I totally get you on the metal thing. I've trimmed down my metal music a considerable amount. Mostly because the music just doesn't do much for me anymore but also because I feel like a large part of the metal scene just tries to be edgy for the sake of keeping the scene alive or something. Like brutal death metal, if you really stop and think about it, is 100% cringeworthy to me now because there really is no substance and the reasons people have for listening to it are not much better than people listening to strictly EDM because they like the beats. For me to like metal now it really has to be something unique or well composed for me to take it seriously.
I guess to answer my own question, people probably don't take pop seriously as an art form or just reject it because it doesn't have a masculine enough aesthetic for their tastes, whether it's metal or hip hop or whatever.

thats a decent theory and is probably right to a certain extent. Ive also heard people say things like "the artist didnt even write that song", like they dont value the song because some industry guy made the song for the sole purpose of appealing to the mainstream - which is right, but if the song sounds good then whats it even matter, and the artist still has to have talent to sing the lyrics but they will dismiss them anyway. Its like the tinfoil hat crowd of music. They consider it trash JUST because some industry producer makes a song that will appeal to a large crowd.
