Why were the 80's such an awful decade for music?
they were good for literally everything but rock
and even then, indie rock started in the 80's, so just rock n roll & metal
>>63698451
what is the name of that group?
>>63698482
bruce springsteen
um, new wave?
new wave, post-hardcore, noise-rock, noise, techno, electro, house (chicago, nyc, acid), post-punk, synthpop, and hip-hop were all strong in the 80s. probably one of my favorite decades of music - when people call it shit I assume they're just doing a cursory glance over what's popular.
>>63698482
Katrina & The Waves
>>63698474
This. idk what the fuck happened in the 80's that brought that wave of shitty country-sounding arena rock.
>>63698570
>no mention of no wave
>>63698474
Pretty much this. Really the only part of the 80s music scene that sucked was the glam metal.
>>63698582
yeah that's another one, though personally i'm not a big fan of it myself.
The 1980s brought us such bands like Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, Bad Brains, Motorhead, and Metallica, to name but a few. What do you mean the 80s was an awful decade for music? There was some great music in the 80s.
Pixies, The Smiths, Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, Joy Division, Metallica, The Cure, Tom Waits, Talk Talk, Slayer, Kate Bush, The Stone Roses, Iron Maiden, Dead Kennedys, R.E.M., Prince, Public Enemy, The Replacements, Rush, Beastie Boys, Michael Jackson, Cocteau Twins, Dinosaur Jr, Minutemen, Hüsker Dü, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Violent Femmes, Wipers, Black Sabbath, Morbid Angel, Mercyful Fate, Dio, This Heat, Dead Can Dance, Kraftwerk, Bruce Springsteen, The Chameleons, Motörhead, King Crimson, Queensrÿche, Megadeth, AC/DC, Peter Gabriel, Sepultura, Judas Priest, The Fall, Guns n' Roses, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds, The Feelies, My Bloody Valentine, XTC, U2, Candlemass, Helloween, Glenn Branca, The Gun Club, NoMeansNo, The Sound, Bad Brains, The Pogues, Galaxie 500, Depeche Mode, Black Flag, Einstürzende Neubauten I could go on
>>63698582
>>63698703
no wave was in the 70's, friends
swans came around after no wave had come and gone
>>63699333
I like RYM too.
the 80's are a pleb litmus test
>>63698582
>searched no wave
>found this awesome album
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6K_5XzA-34
Thank you for helping me finding an unrelated awesome album
>>63699333
>Rock, rock and more rock
the list could and should have stopped at pixies
>>63698482
Heart
>>63699351
Late 70's and early 80's actually
Reminder that The Ascension came out 81.
>>63699416
No problemo. That compilation was done by Eno and it's fucking awesome
I can't get it into me to hate 80s rock when I at least like it in principle. It SOUNDS awful but I at least appreciate the intention of "fuck yeah, loud noises and fun". Nowadays rock SOUNDS awful and the intention is always morose and cool ironic detachment.
>>63699424
I can't help that RYM are all rockists.
>>63699468
Oh wait fuck I was thinking of No New York
Never mind I'm stupid
>>63699478
Like what kind of rock specifically? I don't think anyone really makes arena rock anymore
most 80's Mainstream is pretty godawful.
But if you were into punk or independent music at the time, it must've been pretty incredible. To imagine being at one of the early Butthole Surfers, Public Enemy, or Ministry shows. Christ, that shit must've blown people's minds
The 80's were by far the best decade for music. It had, by far, the most innovations in the modern era, with the most aesthetically pleasing arrangements for songs. Only an idiot would pigeonhole it with hair metal.
>>63698474
>indie rock
>>63699541
>It had, by far, the most innovations in the modern era
It objectively did not. You can jump from 1979 to 1990 without missing too much.
>>63699520
80's pop is so hit or miss
you have some of the best shit ever and some of the worst
but fuck, it still amazes me how this shit was made 30 years ago https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9GMjH1nR0ds
>>63699514
Well, I was thinking of like 5 when 3 days butt and stuff like that was still reelevant. Nowadays that kind of hard rock is dead and thank christ for that. Honestly, mainstream rock died for me in 75. Glam, Grunge, Alt, all that shit is awful.
The 80s was weird for metal and artists whose heyday was the 60s. That's pretty much it, and even then the decade gave birth to thrash.
>>63699561
yeah, indie rock
or it was more indie pop at this point
the Smiths, R.E.M., the Feelies, the Vaselines, Beat Happening
all 80's dude
>>63699567
It objectively did, and no you cannot. I don't know what you've been smoking to make such an asinine statement, but feel free to try backing it up.
Ill take glam over grunge any day of the week
At least theres like 5 good glam songs
grunge has 1
>>63699614
>grunge has 1
which one?
>>63699568
Maybe it's just me, but I always hated the remix over the original.
but the 80s had the best thrash and black metal
>>63699570
Ah good 'ol Alt rock. The upper middle class suburban WASP family from 2004 of music.
But seriously, I agree. I've been getting into a lot of recent noise-rock, post-rock type stuff and it's really good.
>>63699641
as a pop song the remix is better
as a dance song the original is better
that shit always gets a huuuuge reaction at dj sets, its mental
>>63699614
Confirmed for knowing literally nothing about grunge.
I always got the feeling people who do not like the 80's are generally either dadrockers whose favorite artists created crap during the decade, or people who don't like music that has a big, polished production.
>>63699578
And black and death and grind
>>63699727
Maybe you just don't know anything about glam.
Don't be so arrogant pham.
>>63699633
Black Hole Sun is dope af
Better than any of those 5ish glam songs thats for sure
but still
>>63699776
Lmao, not even the best Soundgarden song.
>>63699690
Oh yeah definitely. So does Bizarre Love Triangle, but I hate the remix of that one as well, and it's actually called extended dance remix.
>>63699776
I love grunge so I disagree with you completely on that front, but of any grunge song you could have picked you sure picked a great one.
>>63699424
Shut the fuck up, dumb weaboo.
>>63699789
Only one that earns its time length
Still repetitive af
But at least the little arpeggio is interesting enough to merit that repetition
Their other songs are the same 3 power chord riffs for five minutes and it makes me want to kill myself
>implying the 80's wasn't the best decade for music of all kinds
And it was the most Aesthetic
>>63699875
Honestly how many Soundgarden songs have you listened to?
>>63699776
>Black Hole Sun
>Not Down in a Hole
i am laffin m8
Rock music was shit during the 80s because of all that glam garbage, but everything else was pretty good.
>>63699776
If you like Black Hole Sun, there's plenty of grunge songs exactly like it.
>>63699931
All of superunknown, badmotorfinger and the first half of their debut that sounds like Sabbath whose name I can remember -although I don't consider that album grunge the same criticism applies
>>63699934
>not Nutshell
>not Say Hello 2 Heaven
>not Cherub Rock
>not Nearly Lost You
>not I Stay Away
>not Pretend We're Dead
>not Change
>not Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns
laffin even harder m8
>>63698451
80s music wasn't bad… bad 80s music was bad, people only seem to want to think of hair metal and industry plants when thinking of 80s music, yes there was shit like Madonna and Motley Krew but there was lots of really good stuff no one remembers, like industrial, or new wave, or no wave, or the NWOBHM movement, those gave us the likes of killing joke and the smiths… yeah for some god awful reason hair metal became a thing, but for every coke fueled asshat there was 6 genuine artists
