Why did it initially get bad reviews? In retrospective reviews it gets pretty high acclaim but most of the original reviews seem to attack them over the Beatles sgt peppers.

Because they literally bandwagoned on the Sgt. Pepper hype train and got rightfully shit on for it. The retrospective apologist bullshit (see: this thread) is pathetic. This album is a joke; an extremely subpar facsimile of a much better pop rock album, which totally missed the psychedelic train.
This is more psychedelic than Sgt. Pepper's, though.

I agree it's awful. Hell, the stones are my favourite band and this is their worst record, but your reasoning for it it's fucking stupid. Id could have come 2 years before Sgt Peppers and it would be shit "Bandwagoning" isn't an actual criticism.
