Fenriz actually started disliking black metal the more it strayed away from traditional metal tropes and became less about the metal.

He's agreed with some memegook that black metal was at its peak in the 80s when it was still largely influenced by thrash.

It baffles me how few people notice how simplified their music got compared to Since and ATWW. Agree on ATWW being my favorite album in general too.

>simple to play but arguably complex sounding Opeth-worship acoustic guitars that reek of 90s finnish folk is now substituted for two-note meme post rock acoustic parts
>instead of having a solid fucking lead guitar part going on at 80% of the song with a nice rhythm under it, now you have a "mature arranged" halfassed root note dubbed with like 3 more layers of it, shitty droning repetitive rhythm guitar and, again, halfassed acoustic guitar over it

It really pains me how shit they got. They are a rare band that I really can resonate with, both as a listener and as a musician. Listening to their songs I can't help but feel like I understand what they are going for with every arrangement. Can't help but notice how literally every single song from the last 3 albums was lazely copy-pasted in Guitar Pro or some bullshit.

I also really really can't stand their new retro-80s stage look because it looks like shit.
>>
>>63688072
Under The Sign Of The Black Mark is definitely good, forgot about that. but the early dm stuff and any thrash whatsoever doesn't really excite me to be honest. the things that have been done in black metal and avant metal seem a lot weirder to me.
I'm not saying all the 80s stuff is bad, it's just not what I like. didn't anticipate such strong reactions.
>>
>>63688146
>Can't help but notice how literally every single song from the last 3 albums was lazely copy-pasted in Guitar Pro or some bullshit.
I feel like the majority of it is them completely misunderstanding what made ATWW so amazing.

I tend to be alone in this thought, but I don't rate Across The Dark too highly outside of a few tracks. It really feels like they went "people loved ATWW for the simple melodic parts, quick shove clean vocals in even if they don't fit and remove most of the not-simple songwriting!", although I still like the album a lot.
The following 3 I really do think are them trying to recapture ATWW and ATD assuming they were popular for the simple sort-of "singalong" choruses or some shit and put a lot of focus on them as a result. While they're wrong, the sales will go well as it appeals to the scene and then they assume they're doing it right.

I really, really dislike ATD. It's weird because the tracks that I liked when the album first came out and the tracks I disliked then are now more or less completely shifted. A lot of songs on that album start with a very upbeat, poppy sounding riff/melody. I don't say "poppy" as some kind of metalcore-hating faggot, I say it as someone who actively listens to pop music. Where The Last Wave Broke starts with a part that is so homosexual sounding it makes me cringe a bit. Alongside Ephemeral it makes the worst two songs they ever made, hands down. Second issue with ATD I have is that there are couple of songs that are way longer than they should be - they tried to emulate ATWW's lengthy tracks by simple repetition of song parts that aren't catchy or good enough to carry the songs. The Harrowing Years and Into The Woods are prime example of this. Lay of the Autumn and second half of Against the Stream are the best parts of the album, by far. It sounds like I hate ATD but I am just merely disappointed because I remember having such massive expectations.

What made ATWW so great is the unique pacing and atmosphere flow from one track to another. I would really like them to make another single or two like Mortal Share, it has a very unique "modern" mdm atmosphere that I haven't heard anywhere else except on maybe one or two tracks on OG's The Redshift. Also they haven't written a single truly "epic" part since ATWW, excuse the buzzword. I want to hear another part like that ending of The Killjoy or chorus of Death Walked the Earth.

At least you can truly say that all of last 3 albums differ greatly and there is always hope that the new one is gonna be a step in the right direction.

Oddly one of my favourite Insomnium songs is Down With The Sun, it just has some upbeat energy I can really get behind and due to its short-enough length the basic songwriting kinda fits. It's catchy as fuck while still sounding like Mortal Share-ish Insomnium (not as good by far but you get the point).

I keep telling myself the next one will be good, but it never is. I've lost hope and stopped actually getting physical copies past One For Sorrow.
>>
but seriously what's some 80s avant-spork metal
>>
>>63688501
would you say that One For Sorrow is their "catchiest" album tho? I don't care much for the band but I would probably label that one my "favourite" because stuff like Unsung and Regain The Fire is just insanely catchy.
also props for actually buying stuff

>those forced thrashy riffs on OFS
>mfw

Yeah, Down With The Sun is a good song but what you just described is basically what they changed - they had this melancholic, mournful but still overly melancholic sound nailed to perfection, which was basically completely swapped for this slightly optimistic, hopeful vibe. Also around that time their lyrics went to shit too, but that I can kind of get over. Agreed on physical releases too.

the fuck
>>
>>63688594
I'd say One For Sorrow had some really solid riffs on there that were enough to draw me in.
The closer was close enough to actually being not-shit that I could get into it, I really like most of Through The Shadows (although that may be as it follows the same damn formula as Down With The Sun almost to a T), Every Hour Wounds has some decent fucking pace to it, and funnily enough I actually quite like Weather The Storm even if it was just a throwaway bonus track with the DT feature being mostly wasted. Weather The Storm was using the generic chord progression to raise some basic feels, but it's functional if nothing else.

One For Sorrow is my favourite worst Insomnium album, as much of a title as that is.
>>
>>63688561
that's the problem, there are none.
CF's Into The Pandemonium maybe (that's what rym lists as one of the three avant metal releases of the 80s (the 90s have 88 releases already))
>>
>>63687764
too far
>>
>>63688617
I'll agree that's what they changed and it was shit, but Down With The Sun was like the first instance of it when it could still be somewhat mournful and was just a nice change of pace where if they went back to their old style after it would be considered a nice bit of variety.
Instead they copy-pasted inferior versions of it over and over again into oblivion.

They are considered a classic band just because they rode the wave of much better releases. Can't name a single riff they wrote off the top of my head.

I mean, they are enjoyable to lazily nod your head up and down while being semi drunk on some shitty festival, but not anything I would ever play at home or whatever. Forgettable as fuck.

You want some symphonic black metal senpai. Start with Midian by Cradle of Filth (yes, that album of their's is actually great). From there you can try Limbonic Art and Emperor's later albums.

So I just listened to these guys for the first time and I obviously started with their most critically hialed album.

I am quite underwhelmed honestly. They neither have the catchiness of prime era In Flames and dt or the elaborate songwriting of Edge of Sanity and frankly all the songs sounded nearly the same, I can't remember anything from the album.
And the lyrics are completely cliched tripe. This is not even good for 'fun' metal.

I agree Insomnium have gotten worse over the years, but they are still way above their competition, Omnium Gatherum don't even come close, their last was really bland.

The only melodeath from this decade I really liked was Enshine and Horrendous.

Maybe it's just the nostalgia? I know for me anyways, when that album dropped I was about 17 and first getting into music heavier than Metallica and co, so it's got a special place for me (to get all sentimental). Try AA's first album (once sent from the golden hall), it still brings the ruckus and has some great riffs throughout.
