What did you think of Weekend by the way?
>>
>>63684846
quite good, but not the best Godard I've seen. The traffic jam scene was indeed phenomenal, but I feel that overal he took his style a liiiiittle too far and I prefer it when he does it more subtle (which is best in Contempt imo), so we probably just have different preferences regarding Godard (I still found it nice though, I gave it 3 stars I think).

You haven't seen Alphaville yet then?
I thought the film as a whole was terrific and probably the most I've gotten out of Godard. I won't pretend that I'm able to explain it (there's something about rejecting culture in favor of the birth of something else) but I love the nihilistic approach Godard has taken with the "this film was found in a dump". It usually signalifies the end of straightforward Godard and I have to assume that that's the message he was trying to send with it. I also unironically agree with a lot of his political views which makes it more enjoyable for me.

I'd rank what I've seen
Weekend > 2 Or 3 Things I Know About Her > Alphaville > Vivre Sa Vie > Breathless > Goodbye To Language. Seeing Contempt this month

>>63685009

0 live. Doesn't make much of a difference, only a few tracks are really different, but since 0 is so great it means this is great too. Just listen to 0 and check this out if you can't get enough of it tbqh. 3.5

>Patty Waters - College Tour
The calm parts are sometimes a little too uuiet imo, further amplified by the fact that Patty's vocals seem slightly quieter (and often panned to the left channel) in the mix than the instruments. When Patty lets her voice roar, it's pretty intense, but otherwise this album doesn't affect me like Sings does. It's probably because the calm and the wild parts aren't separated into sides, making the juxtaposition between them less effective to me. I do have to say that the moody instrumentation is pretty sweet, nice and ominous, although maybe a little too minimalist at times. It's a grower, probably. Decent for the time being. 2.5+

Just watched it today, by chance. There was a scene in it with a mob of young Wall St. workers chanting "BOMB HA-NOI! BOMB HA-NOI!" towards the largest peace demonstration ever in the U.S. I'd seen the "Bomb Hanoi" chanting excerpted and used by Chris Marker in his "A Grin Without a Cat" (which was one of the strongest intellectual histories of the 20th century in film played out as a political history)

And I don't know, he's just slightly pretentious.
Maybe read this piece http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2000/11/20/exile-paradise
I think it gives a good general overview on him and Richard Brody seems to know a lot about him. I think mostly that he tried to do the whole history of cinema thing both literally in Histoire(s) du Cinema and less literal in his other movies, I don't know.
I just mostly like him for his loose atmosphere and nice conversations though, and he has some cool twists, I don't know if it's that important to "get" him (or if that's even what you're supposed to do, or if it's even possible. Just enjoy it :))

painting with was pretty filler-y but I feel like a lot of it is going to grow on me- and the parts I liked make me want to relisten a lot.
it's all super cohesive and direct which I liked- not much ambient padding. My Girls from MPP is great but it's a little annoying sometimes when you want to jam out and it takes a while to get going. none of that on Painting With.

hopes for the concert: floridada and a 10+ minute jam session on Natural Selection, that song makes me want to dance
>>
Graceland is pretty shit, it's slightly bland pop with a couple of 'cool' bits of instrumentation from South Africa just thrown in which actually makes it sound even more boring. I thought it could have been nice but it doesn't delve into the African influence enough.

I didn't like it at first either, but now i've come to enjoy it a lot. It's just a really good pop album.
>>
>>63686942
just to say, there are 3 other Chris Marker movies I've seen that stand with "A Grin Without a Cat": "La Jetée", "Le Joli Mai", and "Sans Soleil" - all four are beyond type

for Godard, it's the "influence" aspect that I don't understand. I think people call his films "jazzy" primarily because he uses that kind of music in many of this scores, more than for his semi-improvisational approaches. the looseness of them can be very enjoyable, compared to films he might consider thematically overdetermined ("films" instead of "cinema" - what would he consider both?) that try to say something, make a point, which is really something I tend to value a lot more than what he does. here's always this tension I have with his work that I'm sure he relishes in his audience.

Yeah I've only seen La Jetée and Sans Soleil, but really liked it.
I really agree with your second paragraph. I don't think I enjoy the fact that a lot is semi-improvisational but I do enjoy what comes from it (the fact that is appears so laid-back or "loose") and I think it makes a lot of the conversations more realistic (maybe not in content, but definitely in their tone)

HELL CUP

Eruditey vs Gina

Eruditey picked some sweet sweet Sun Ra. I was surprised by how short the album was but it didn't diminish the quality.
Gina picked a DeepChord presents. The mix of ambient and techno is something I've really enjoyed in Brock van Wey's work but there's a sense of greater build-up and majesty I prefer in his to this one.
Spring is here and Eruditey wins the match
Gina finishes round 1 with two wins and two losses
Eruditey now has three wins and zero losses, and for their final match will be against natkingcole who also has the same record. One will emerge with a perfect record into the second round. Who will claim this honor?

havent had time to shitpost a lot so heres a chart update:

>daniel johnston - the what of whom
more lo-fi piano goodness. its daniel johnston, so you cant really go wrong with this.

>daniel johnston - continued story
what? hes got a guitar now? and its not lo-fi as fuck? this is not how i like my daniel...
but seriously its a pretty good switch up, his guitar playing is just as good as his piano playing, but its just the good quality that messes my ears up.

>boris - amplifier worship
boris is such a 7/10 band, their stuff is always pretty good but not really great so it makes all of their stuff pretty much the same quality and it makes their discography not so fun to explore if everything is so same-y [except for gensho, gensho is beautiful].

I think aqam has alright taste, but he's a pretty blatant Scaruffi-drone, but I don't think he even denies it.

Any trip with a RYM curve that's a blatant copy of SellMeAGod (probably one of my favorite RYM users other than Auntler) is probably the worst ever but I can't think of any off the top of my head.

I HAVE NO MOUTH AND I MUST MEME.jpg
1 MB, 1920x1080
ROUND 3: I’M FISH FALLS FOR THE SPIRITUAL JAZZ MEME

Tripfriend
>Scientist – Scientist Rids the World of the Evil Curse of the Vampires.
A pretty good dub record that in no way lives up to its name or cover, which are too good to be true. Wasn’t super about it the first listen, but the second time I found it to be pretty great. I’m a sucker for the horror genre, especially the Universal-related ones so this album hit a pretty hard soft spot. Wish it kept my interest as much as I hoped, but maybe I’ll just have to pull a herb kid and listen to it high. Dub might not really be my thing right now, but who knows??
6.5- Tripfriend moves on!

Misha
>The Pyramids – King of Kings
Melodic and really out there, but I really just wasn’t feeling this one, honestly. Considering this only has 310 ratings but 14 of my friends have rated it, I would guess it’s tied pretty closely to /daily/ or /mu/. The rhythm sections were nice enough, but I just didn’t feel it was eventful enough for me. I felt in a few sections it just had absolutely too much going on for me to enjoy it. Only two listens so this could easily change, but I just don’t feel as touched as I did with Karma.
5.0+ Tripfriend moves on!

Good Friend Rodriguez
>In a Model Room
I enjoyed the new wave-y/synth-y moments, but I’ll be damned if some of these instrumentals didn’t just annoy the heck out of me. There’s far too many tracks like “Sophisticated” which just fart along without anything really satisfying at all. Fav tracks were “Art Mania” and “Kameari Pop.” A really mixed bag, but if you’re an early New Wave feller, give this a shot.
5.0+ Kev moves on!
>>
Somedumbcont...>>63690229

Kevorkian
>Tom Waits – Mule Variations
Damn…does this guy have ANY bad albums? Seriously, I haven’t even thought one was even below average. Every single one has been at least like a 6. This isn’t his worst, but not my favorite either. My biggest complaint with this album is that the instrumentation is really skeletal and not as interesting as an album like Blood Money or Rain Dogs. Blues-y riffs occasionally bored me, but weren’t uneventful enough to make this album noticeably bad. Some genuinely creepy moments like “What’s He Building” vs. really feels-y moments like “Come On Up To The House.” A great album, but pretty distant from his best.
6.5+ Kev moves on!

Only one round left. Thankfully, I'm starting both of these albums right now. Gonna go and throw up real quick before I start them, though.

So today I moved to a different genre - I listened to DJ Vadim's USSR Repertoire (The Theory of Verticality). I tackled this album before, but now it "clicked". At first I expected something like DJ Shadow or something, but it's way more minimalistic. Drum patterns are kinda unusual, and everything else is very subtle. I really loved the track "Live from Paris (Remix)"
I gotta explore instrumental hip-hop more, I only have the essentials, DJ Shadow, Dilla, Madlib, the Avalanches if they count

overall, a strong 7 again I think

I wouldn't count it. Modern classical that takes influences from it but definitely not jazz.
>Uncle Meat (does THIS count??)
I haven't heard it. Though Zappa seems to step into jazz rock every once in a while I'm pretty sure his style is more other things than jazz.
Not saying you can't cite it as a jazz record. I sometimes mention Awakening by the Pharaohs as jazz and all despite heavy funk/jazz-funk influences. It's just not what people usually have in mind when you say jazz.
Anyway if you dig jazz rock and stuff fusion is not a bad idea to try to get into.

Maybe try out point of departure. Also Dolphy is kinda unique but sometimes gets compared to Ornette, maybe try him.

zhendre/gina/kretschgup has sadly moved on, apparently.

Sooooo, Hasture moves on!

Your restriction is an album from after 2010! (2011-present)

i personally think all of us on /daily/ have nice taste (i'm biased, obviously) but on /mu/ overall Montie's taste fucking infuriates me.

Because most of us do not leave /daily/.

Really curious for your opinion on 98.12.28. Did you enjoy Long Season?

'fraid not off the top of my head, maybe if you listed some previous names. I've heard good things about it but the black metal tag's put me off, I'll check it out

>Because most of us do not leave /daily/
same but I barely even post here anymore
>Did you enjoy Long Season?
Yes, a lot, but I enjoyed it more as one long piece because of the atmosphere it created and the use of motifs, so I'm worried I wont like 98.12.28 nearly as much

>>63691565
who dis????

idk

If you like his first three, then you should probably enjoy New Moon. Surprised you've never heard it!

My favs have to be XO and Roman Candle, though I don't think he even has a bad album.

98.12.28 has a lot of shorter tracks, sure, but it's atmosphere is pretty undeniable. The live version of Long Season is my favorite song of all time right now. I've found very few people that prefer the studio version that have heard both. I'd still suggest hearing Uchu Nippon Setagaya first so you can be familiar with some of the tracks.

Do u got a RYM? I'd really like to poke around ;))
>>
>>63691841
pls no "sarcasm" or even "jokes" in my circlejerk please. How long've you been here for now cunt?
>>63691844
Pretty sure I have Uchu Nippon Setagaya on one of my charts already so I'll check that out now.
>Do u got a RYM? I'd really like to poke around ;))
I have one from like 2 years ago that I only updated once if u really want

Yup! It's right next to 98.12.28 :O >>63691357

And if you're not super proud of it, then I guess I don't need it!

Absolutely insane dubs!
