I don't know why I have this account. I guess because I feel like I have "rymcore" taste, or at least taste closer to that than /mu/core by quite a lot.
I don't get how you guys can rate music though. Like how do I account for sometimes being in the mood for something and other times not? And how do I get around the fact that rating seems inevitably prescriptive and forces you to write off albums to varying extents that are perfectly fine for what they are and likable in their own right?

a lot of that has to do with the artists involved on that particular album, who all employ particularly austere instruments.
this is an oversimplification and doesn't account for collaboration, but there are kinda distinct schisms, in terms of sounds used, between the dominant 'sites' of eai: tokyo/seoul/vienna/london/ny/chicago etc.
from my experience artists from tokyo(sachiko m, toshimaru nakamura, otomo yoshihide, tetuzi akiyama etc) and seoul (hong chulki, choi joonyong, jin sangtae, etc) use the most distinct sounds, with the tokyo crew using particularly decontexualized sound (hence onkyo) and seoul the opposite (use of broken turntables, hard drives, electronics etc in hyper-technologized society).
lots of the european scenes are more closely related to 'traditional' free improv instrumentation and american-produced eai is a cluserfuck of everything or pretty closely related to conservatory stuff like pisaro and other californians
oversimplified and long-winded but maybe that gives ya some starting points
