"Rap — so many words, so little said. What rap did that was impressive was to show there are so many tone-deaf people out there. All they need is a drum beat and somebody yelling over it and they’re happy. There’s an enormous market for people who can’t tell one note from another." - Keith Richards

>shoving an entire genre into a box

What about those with music degrees?
Or multi-instrumentalists?
Or the huge amount of rappers that produce their own beats that you would be an idiot to say is just drums.

What about the entire underground/experimental hip-hop subgenres that you damn well know that old fuck hasn't touched.

You're just strokin his dick over his opinion of radio jams

I would post my rap shits but no one would make a rapgenius page. Guess I gotta do live shows or something.

Shit even lil dicky has that old navy money these days so who's to say. I feel like he's making more of a splash but I'm in the same boat. I guess lyrically I'm in the same ball park, but if he's major league I'm in the minors looking to get scouted.

The thing about comedy rap is that it gets stale after just one or two listens. Nobody cares to hear the same joke twice, it's not funny anymore. Lil Dicky at least has a few quality songs that don't just rely on comedy. Plus he puts on a great live show, saw him at my school last year
>>
>>63672715
let me ask you what makes a rap evergreen then?
like what are some of the songs that you can come back to years later and your like "this is still the fucking shit."

Don't get me wrong I understand where you're coming from, but at the same time I think of a group like Das Racist and I can still play and it can stand up with like Action Bronson, Chance the rapper, other "more legitimate" albums. Even Lil Wayne has more punchlines than say "radio rap."

I think pusha and kendrick lyrically are in another dimension as far as pushing the genre forward but they play or pander to specific corners to ensure sales as well. The only analogy I can think of is like going 60 miles an hour with the hand brake on.

If they were put in a room with like 70s alt rock artists like Yes or something they would make the most insane albums. I imagine like a 23 minute intro rap where it's strictly an autobiography of their living grandparent or something leading into a fuller theme encompassing an extended play album at like 2 and a half hour rap ballad.

Almost like if R. Kelly made a successful trapped in the closet but you never knew it was an overarching story until you listened to it like 3 times and someone else gave you the idea first
>i feel like the old woman thing at the start is more important than it seems
>really man it's only a 20 minute song and you just got that ide~
>what is it?
>I need to go home and listen to the album again something just clicked
>what about work
>this is my work
>>
>>63672834
>Even Lil Wayne has more punchlines than say "radio rap."

The fact that you say this tells me that you're new to rap.

Lil Wayne was the GOAT, but then his bars fell off after he went to jail (after Carter 3), but he's been making a return to form.
>>
>>63673023
Pusha T literally does not have a bad project, it's just a shame he doesn't have more sales.

Alright, gonna share one of my favourite alternative/underground rap artists with you guys.

Zeroh is a rapper/producer from Los Angeles, he makes trip-hop/experimental. The beats are unique, but what excites me even more are his raps. He raps very creatively, combines many flows and ideas into his verses, and really gives his language power.

Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KpgnAAUUio

Bandcamp (he removed many of his best projects): https://horez.bandcamp.com/

Mixtapes I reploaded (some original stuff, some flylo beats with his raps on them):

>>
>>63680822
He had something like 4 mixtapes on his old soundcloud, but he removed them. You can still find alot of his old stuff on Youtube, and I got my hands on alot of it. There are also 2 free releases on his current Bandcamp - more recent, and with more of his own productions, though I still prefer the older ones.

Check the ones I uploaded, I can upload the rest if you're interested.

Currently listening to RJ and probably Chuuwee next

Is lil yachty "alt rap"

so far this sounds nothing like I was expecting. I guess the young West is moving away from the DJ Mustard sound

Best song by far on a disappointing.

Has he even rapped since Awful alterations? I found it awhile back, but he seems to just release instrumental stuff now. Last thing I remember him releasing was something his brother did called Selph

Thoughts on Oddisee - Al Wasta?

I listened to it a few times yesterday. It's a good teaser but I really only liked a couple tracks. I hope he's saving his good stuff for an album.
>>
Does anyone remember this?

It was an EP labeled as experimental hip hop.

I think it was French, although it had nonsense lyrics not actually in French, the voices were quite heavily distorted to sound like they were vibrating slightly. I remember part of the lyrics sounding something like 'I dont want see that trail' and that kind of morphed into the singer just spouting nonsense like 'seebados'.

The music was thick and syrupy and quite bassy. It wasn't really beat driven and sounded like thick flowing liquid.

The cover was a painting in a renaissance style I think. Someone eating at a banquet?
>>
how about Alzhi - Lead Poison?

I listened through one time and the lyricism was nice but no single track really stuck out to me.

Anyone got a dl for this? Couldn't find it in the archive

Did they rap exclusively in English or in French aswell

Honestly it's hard to know how many mixtapes he had, at least for people who didn't know about Zeroh before he deleted those. I do have a fair amount of deleted mixtapes, here is what I uploaded before + the rest I have:

His focus seems to have shifted towards production, but I think Pool Party is the only project of his that's entirely instrumental: Bred: A Dedication from 2013 has a fair share of rapping on it, and he still does alot of features as a rapper on Jon Wayne's stuff (and recently - on Busdriver's stuff!). I hope his next release will feature more rap like in his older material, since the changes he made didn't help him blow up or anything.
>>
>>63683961
are those 2nd two worth listening to or nah?

I only heard that he had a few older mixtapes and that he erased them from the internet. idk why it's so tough to find them. what.cd doesn't have shit. I never did check slsk though..

nah it was just like a made up language interspersed with some short English phrases every now and again

/mu/ memed it for a while because it spends a lot of time insulting white people for being racist, and /mu/ is really racist so they got all antsy that someone was calling it out and decided the only way to fight back was to meme

During Earl's full lenght albums there's so much fucking inconsistency. This is his best complete work, that's easier when it's so short but it's still pretty fucking gudd.

yea that seems to be the hurtle for hip hop fans. pitchfork literally gave the album a 6.9 because the singing was too crisp.

That Pitchfork review was some of their most egregious bullshit. All they criticize is it being too precise and recognizably rooted in musical theater. A 6.9 and not even in their year end honorable mentions.

Besides a drum loop sampled incrementaly by millisecond trancients, and a couple of chops from a Erykah Badu vokal. i've used only free VST's. two made in puredata. In general I use Ableton, prootools, Fl, Serato, Puredata, Renoise, and some hardware for initial sequencing. Recomend not using more money than you earn.

He has a philosophy and unhealthy obsession about Sonic the Hedgehog. He thinks that the rings represent the circle of life. And his favorite color is pink because that's the color of a vagina and he thinks that makes it the color of life.

everybody is still sleeping on the new GC tape
sludgy stripped-down instrumentals propelled by diverse percussion

Almond milk paradise was pretty fucking great but I wanted more like that and less like the rest of the stuff. I could listen to Almond Milk Paradise as an evergreen sort of track it never spoils it doesn't use any sort of crutch its honest silly and endearing the instrumental is touching and it stands on its own among any other rap song.

Does anyone have like a compilation of all the albums listed here like a big ass torrent or something I'd love to peruse and look for more singles like AMP but don't really have the drive to look through stuff anymore.

>let me ask you what makes a rap evergreen then?
Lyricswise?

Depth. Aesthetic. Look at MF DOOM for Depth. His lyrics are so semantically dense that people never get sick of him, plus he's got punchlines for miles, hard-hitting lines too and turns of phrase that I can sum up best with pic-related. He's just all-round clever in a technical way.as well as

As for aesthetic, DOOM does that well too for other examples I'd give Roots Manuva, a UK rapper, even something like Captain Murphy with his Cult theme is interesting. For a different approach something like ATCQ is interesting, not for the lyrics per se but the sounds of the words. Usually they're talking shite but their lyrics sound great because they work as sounds, think of it as vocal drums. Try saying your rhymes over and over until they lose all meaning, think of it as a chant in another language, then try to play with the sounds, switch words around, play with the delivery etc. Remember the words have to sound good as well as being smart. Kendrick is really good at this too (I think his voice helps a lot) Basically how to paint a picture or create an atmosphere using both the semantics and the phonetics of words.

Finally there's narrative as in telling stories or political shit. Keep this to a minimum unless you've actually got a story to tell or a point to make. Don't force it and if you do always remember that sounding good is more important than making gay political points or telling shitty stories. If you can pull it off that's great but if your heart isn't in it, or if you put it ahead of both the meaning and over all sound of the lyrics it usually ends up being shit. I'm all for story telling/preaching/whatever in most genres but it rarely works in hip hop. You'll just end up sounding like some J Cole/ Immortal Technique/ Hopsin faggot and those are literally the worst people in hip hop.

Also listen to other genres. Folk, Poetry, Zappa stuff whatever. Don't paint yourself into a corner.
