Ooooooh! Black Metal. Like the best of this genre, it’s ominous, dark, and feels like the cold death of winter creeping in on you. I really enjoyed the atmosphere, but felt it was less dark and had fewer apexes and emotional moments than Filosofem. Still, the atmosphere is on point, and those who want a somber Black Metal release with ambient undertones, give this a shot. The ending reminded me of Runescape and I almost cried. Not even joking :/

>Post Regiment – s/t
I have literally never heard of “Melodic Hardcore” before in my life, but maybe I should look into it! This was really hard hitting punk music that was surprisingly catchy as well. Freaking fire emoji. There were a few notable dips in the track listing, like the first song and the 10th track. Plus, I didn’t think it needed 23 tracks. I know it sounds retarded when people say this, but it really makes more sense here. If they just went the Minor threat route and made only an EP, it could’ve been B E A U T I F U L. Very few songs were "short bursts of energy" like they should've been and instead were like the same track twice. Why do punk bands do this? If you don't really have that much to do just make your song like 2 or less minutes. It works like 90% of the time.

>Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
This one's good, of course. I don't know why one would choose to listen to Queens of the Stone Age over Kyuss, personally. Kind of a Melvins vibe. Doesn't get me particularly excited or inspired, but it's solid. 3-3.5/5

Pantera without Dimebag. Could've been way worse, and it's not bad, actually. Just sort of over-polished and not that interesting. Could be good in smaller doses. "Bury Me in Smoke" is awesome though. 2/5

reviewed (full thing on rym, too long for one 4chan post):

I do, however, like the consistency of the drumming alongside the variance in noise timbre, and the drums are quite well mixed to fit alongside the noise without one overpowering the other.
There is a problem with this album, in that the noise in the longer tracks lacks the depth that makes great harsh noise records interesting and exciting; it sounds like Merzbow has cut out or by other means limited higher frequencies in the noise so that the tone, while still aggressive and abrasive, feels held back in its harshness and catharsis.
The second piece of music, Fandangos in Space, nicely reflects the album's concept with some tweeting sounds hidden within the noise. The drums are dropped, and the track is set upon an ambient mist that comes and goes, providing an obvious but effective contrast with the harsh noise, which is often very electronic sounding (i.e. bleeps), and repetitive.
Following on from Fandangos in Space, Tori Uta is a track that gives more space to the drums at times; it starts with solo drumming and is mixed in a way that the bass tones of the drums can be heard very distinctly above the noise, which is skittish and interruptive in this instance. This third track holds a lot more energy than the previous two, significantly more so than Red Bird of Summer Part 1, which I feel was disadvantaged by its length.
The album's finale Red Bird of Summer Part 2 contains what is probably the most aggressive drumming on the record, layered beneath a wetter noise with droning tendencies that fade in and out at seemingly random moments; the energy from the previous track is continued through these techniques. In addition to this, the noise has several "cutouts" and other changes in sound that manage to sustain interest — sometimes sounding like a heavily distorted electric guitar to really compliment the drum beat — to put itself at least a bit above the opening track.

Funnily both album focus on cello

>Czech Philharmonic Orchestra / Jiří Bělohlávek / Alisa Weilerstein - Dvořák
Dvořák is probably the classical pleb's friend. The best thing here is obviously the concerto, particularly fitting for this time of the year. I loved the first movement. The rest were lovely, evocative little pieces, especially Goin' Home. They sounded very folkloric.
7/10

>Nikos Veliotis & Klaus Filip - Slugabed
Drone with cello and electronics. For most of the only track here, the volume of both of the "instruments" oscillates, sometimes placing electronics in the front, other times, cello. It's quite beautiful and soothing. I just think that the cello is maybe not used to its full potential.
8/10

>The Gerogerigegege - Tokyo Anal Dynamite (1990)

Unrelenting noise from beginning to end. Each song is less than a minute and separated only by guitar feedback or a quick "1234!" count before diving immediately into the next track. If this album were an experience, it would be the experience of being waterboarded or tortured in some other kind of repetitive manner. Listen to at loudest bearable volume for maximum enjoyment. 7/10, only real complaint was that it felt a bit repetitive but that could be a positive selling point for Tokyo Anal Dynamite depending on how you look at it.

I hate when people don’t move on even when I really like the album :=(
Almost every release has been very quality. Thank you all for your participation!

Good Friend Rodriguez
>Pierrot Lunaire – Gudrun
wew! Avant-prog! GFR knows me so well <3 best rec based on my personal observable qualities other than Warm Sofa’s “cartooom!” If you’re a sporkposter, you should probably stop reading right about now, because this will certainly not be your thing. This was some really whacky prog, and typically I don’t really enjoy much prog with opera elements, but I really liked this! The opening tracks from both times were particularly great, but tracks like “Gallia” were a bit boring. I enjoyed the progressive electronic elements like the synths or whatever. Also dabbles in concrete elements, which while just slightly existing, still added a lot of flavor to this record. Variety is key in my favorites of avant-prog and this is no exception.
7.5+ Good Friend Rodriguez moves on!

Terminus
>Cocteau Twins – Treasure
First listen I didn’t like this very much because it wasn’t as instantly satisfying as Heaven or Las Vegas. After the second listen I liked it a lot more. It sort of reminds me of Pale Cocoon which is a huge plus. However, pop sensibility is not a bad thing, and this album had much less of it. It was much less memorable, but more soothing version of Heaven or Las Vegas. Not amazing, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
7.0- Tripfriend ots continues! Surprising he lasted this long considering the score before this.

Eruditey
>Brigitte Fontaine & Art Ensemble of Chicago – Comme a la Radio
I enjoyed the orchestration and to an extent I enjoyed Fontaine’s vocals, but the spoken word sections really annoyed me. Not for the performances themselves, but the mixing I felt was just atrocious. Why is the spoken word mixed so high? I originally thought they were trying to do a Historie de Melody Nelson thing, but it turns out that came later, so I’m retracting this sentence from the review. *erases* I think this might actually just be a quality of “Chanson,” a genre I’m not farmiliar with, but it’s just not a quality I enjoyed. Pretty hypnotizing and thought provoking, but I just can’t stand the mix.
5.5+ Eruditey does NOT move on.

Rym says this is a s/t album, but I’ll believe Nyar b/c I trust him with all of my heart <3. I was really impressed by the almost Fahey-esque guitar moments, but extremely underwhelmed every time someone sang. 90% of twee music is assburger and this is no exception. There were, thankfully, tracks that were just guitar. If someone took the instrumental songs and edited it to the length of an EP and told me it was by John Fahey, it’s be pretty believable. Really wishy-washy song quality, but if you like American Primitivism (I’m lookin’ @ u natkingcole!!) give this a try. It’s worth it just for the guitar instrumentals.
5.5- Nyar does NOT move on

Misha
>Pharoah Sanders – Karma
Possibly the best jazz album I’ve heard in my life?? “Colors” Is just SLIGHTLY less amazing than “The Creator Has a Master Plan,” but it’s still not bad, but it’s just not quite “the best and most spiritual jazz song I have heard in my life” like the previous track was. I must have a remastered CD version, because I expected a break somewhere in the middle of the 30+ minute mark, but it never came, which leads me to believe that someone gave a shit on this reissue, which is very nice.
9.5- Misha moves on!

Kevorkian
Sleater-Kinney – The Woods
Wasn’t expecting to enjoy this as much as I did, but WOAH. I’ve never given these guys a chance, mainly because of their association with the Grrrl Power scene. One I don’t mind but have never been particularly fond of for the few little of it I’ve heard. This however, was much noisier and intense (and more good) than 90% of “Indie Rock.” A few production issues, as it felt a bit over-loud. Punk music doesn’t need to be loud to be powerful, but it isn’t so bad that it’s a main detracting element. Carrie Brownstein’s vocals are pretty damn great. Still not exactly my thing, but a really nice rock record nonetheless.
6.0- Kevorkian BARELY moves on.

To reiterate, I’ll need recs from:
>Mark And
>Misha
>Good Friend Rodriguez
>Kevorkian
By tomorrow night (24 hours from when this post goes up) or I’ll just give the spot to someone else. It’d be really nice if you could give me two recs, that way I can just move on to the final round without waiting for you to get on /daily/.

Interesting results so far. I would assume since so many take on the attitude of "ironic shitposting = shitposting" that they would assume "ironically bad music = bad music"

Would any of you care to explain your logic on this?

>>63673059
Yeah. But good and bad are subjective. Just because someone sets out to make good/bad music does not guarantee the results. I just think it's stupid when people describe something as "bad on purpose" because you acknowledge that you don't enjoy it in your subjective opinion, but enjoy not enjoying it so you enjoy it? It confuses me, honestly.

that poll is kind of hard to answer with yes or no. if something is just bad just to be bad and randumb, it's bad, and is often the lowest form of comedy. but if something is intentionally bad to prove a point while still having actual jokes with set ups and punchlines, it's pretty great.
it also helps if you know the people making the content actually have talent and are making it bad as a stylistic choice.
alan resnick's standup and everything is terrible are pretty good examples of 'intentionally' bad comedy.
>>
>>63671376
I know next to nothing about black metal, but I could give some a few fairly basic classical recs:
>Herbert von Karajan & Berliner Philharmoniker - The 9 Symphonies (Beethoven)
>André Previn & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - Rhapsody in Blue; Piano Concerto in F; An American in Paris (George Gershwin)
fair warning, I haven't listened to many other versions of these Gershwin compositions, so this probably isn't the best recording
>Ivan Moravec - Live in Brussels
>Glenn Gould - The Goldberg Variations (Bach)
I prefer the 1982 recording to the 1956 recording, but maybe try both if you're up for it?

And here's some great, if vaguely entry-level modern classical:
>Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians
>Julius Eastman - Unjust Malaise
>The Tale Quartet - String Quartets Nos. 1-3 (Alfred Schnittke)
>Arditti String Quartet - The Complete String Trios and Quartets (Anton Webern)
>Arditti String Quartet & Dawn Upshaw - Arnold Schoenberg 2: Streichquartette I-IV
>György Ligeti - Requiem; Lontano; Continuum
You can find these pieces on a bunch of compilations performed by a hundred different musicians, but I like how this release compiles my three favorite Ligeti works in one place
>Arvo Pärt - Tabula Rasa
>Luciano Cilio - Dialoghi del presente

Indian Summer - Science 1994

I did not enjoy this very much. I felt that the vocals were bland, the guitars were nothing great and that the album was just boring. It had some cool things here and there but was really mediocre to me. I rarely dislike albums because I try to pick shit that I think will be at least good so this was pretty disappointing. I even tried to convince myself that it was okay when I was listening to it and it seemed to work but not anymore. Disappointing stuff. Unhappy Jez face/10.

Spange Call Lilli Line - Nanae

Honestly, I wasn't quite sure if I was gonna like this as much as I did but it was pretty good. The long songs made me worried that they'd bore me but I managed to be engaged by the lovely melodies. I can see this becoming a favorite but I don't think it is one at the moment. Still a good album. Happy Jez face/10.

Jeff Mills - Live at the Liquid Room - Tokyo

I don't think I have to say much about this. The Wizard does a good set with good tunes that are absolute bangers. I can also see this becoming a favorite someday. Happy Jez face/10.

Andy Palacio and The Garifuna Collective - Pretty groovy stuff. I wasn't expecting this to be as fun as it ended up being. However, I feel that the album would be better if it was a bit shorter. Good album. Happy Jez face/10.

>The Obsessed - Lunar Womb
I generally prefer my metal to be a little more extreme, but these guys get away with standard heavy doom riffage pretty well. I think the fact that they have clean vocals that don't suck also helps. Lacks real standouts for me, but it's overall very solid stuff for when you just want good dumb guitar music. 3.0

>Mixed Band Philantropist - The Impossible Humane
I certainly hope you like NWW's more mediocre sound collage output, because that's what you're getting here, except it sounds even more disjointed and uninteresting! 1.5-

>James Blackshaw - The Glass Bead Game
This isn't american primitivism at all! This is just Lubomyr Melnyk-esque minimalism on guitar with some strings added to force some extra emotion into the music (I would have preferred if you kept that stuff out, thanks). In two of the five tracks, guitar is replaced by piano, with the first one being rather stale and boring, lacking the continuous music aspect that Blackshaw's guitar virtuosity does emit, and the second one being more like a Lubomyr Melnyk piece. It was a fine album overall, but it felt like it tried a little too hard to provoke some sort of emotional reaction. Also, piano does work better in this context than guitar. 2.5+

>Hoedh - Hymnvs
Good good ambient. I think I missed something here though, since it didn't feel super unique compared to all the other dark ambient out there. Maybe it takes some more time, for now it's just very relaxing stuff. 3.0+

>Béla Bartók - The 6 String Quartets
Yeah this is basically great. 4.0+

I'm assuming you mean pdfs since .epub or .mobi among other formats can be read quite well in e readers (you can try one of those pdf to something converters but the result is most likely not gonna be any more readable). I sorta understand what you mean, mostly I'd pick physical or kindle for the stuff I like to read. But for studying I find pdfs in front of a screen more comfortable than textbooks. I'm very used to it though.

>Peter Kowald - Open Secrets

Grateful for this - many thanks.

To piss into this piss ocean, today I have mostly been listening to Mykki Blanco, Zebra Katz, Clarence Clarity, and Mellow Venom (if anyone has information about the last two I'd also be quite grateful).

I don't know anything about emo so I'll rec you some punk/garagepunk shit.

Wipers - Is This Real?
The Gories - I Know You Fine but How You Doin'?
Teengenerate - Get Action!
Thee Mighty Caesars - Acropolis Now
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables (or Plastic Surgery Disaster if you've already heard Fresh Fruit)
Richard Hell & The Voidoids - Blank Generation
The Gun Club - Fire of Love

You've probably heard some of these but whatever.

>>63682524
some, not all. thanks for the recs though

this is the best hip hop album of all time.
>>63682247
you'd be missing a track that's like a half hour long apparently.

>Grouper - Dragging a Deer Up a Hill
Ultimate comfy music. It's very stripped-down but the ambient-folk combination is sublime, especially on Stuck. It felt like I was floating for the entire duration of the album
8/10

>Bark Psychosis - Hex
Cool early post-rock but a lot of the times it's not as subtle and detailed as it should be. Just as an example, I wish the little free jazz thing on Fingerspit would go further. The singer's voice is also annoying.
7/10

im rly sorry to say but ur both objectively wrong, the objectively best hip hop album is this one (objectively)
>>
>>63683065
that's also true, accepting that you're forgetting that Aceyalone alone could stand next to those two.
plus ICG has the advantage of being a bit shorter :. it can't drag the way AQ (could).
