TO those who claim that Classical music today has lost some of its lustre, turn to Christian THIELEMANN.

I've been listening and studying Thielemann all day.
What an extraordinary joy. He towers above them all!

Discuss all things Classical in this thread.

Someone earlier requested good recommendations for classical music that gave a beautiful and vivid dreamscape impressions.

I recommend Debussy and Ravel. These are the perfect choices.
They both share delicate command of nuance and they creations are entirely otherworldly and gorgeous.

>Is it impossible to not underrate Mozart?

there's a thread on reddit:classical music that celebrates beethoven being voted no.1 over mozart this year in a classicfm poll. i shouldn't at all be bothered because 1. classicfm and 2. reddit. but still, the thread absolutely makes my blood boil.

it does prove the point though, once again, that beethoven is for children and mozart for adults.

Classicfm is shite, everyone knows that. Their 'Hall of Fame' is basically just vidya babbies voting in their EBIN soundtracks and Home County boomers voting for English romanticism because it reminds them of their childhood. Radio 3 is the patrician choice for classical music radio

>>63662279

I've been giving out identifiable information on /classical/ for a while, nobody gives a shit unless you're a trip and crave attention.

Just had a masterclass myself where I was told that it's quite likely that I'll turn into a tenor in a few years (currently a baritone), so that's sort of interesting. Plus a nice ego boost since he told me that I should audition for music school once I've finished my undergrad.
>>
>>63661356
I prefer Beethoven over Mozart overall atm, but that's pretty retarded overall. Mozart is brilliant, I just haven't looked into him enough or studied theory enough to fully appreciate him.

Beethoven is way more accessible despite who fluffy classical music sounds.

>>63661600
What the fuck is this rating...? Its not concertos, and its not English composers...

>>63662182
Everyone has different techniques. Vengerov is super expressive and cares a lot less about expressiveness while people like Heifetz were almost pissed off by ANY superfluous movements that people made.

Anyone that succeeds in classical music (professionally, not that hack vidya game cosplay girl) should be respected imo.

>On topic

Anyone else really fucking love Joe Hisaishi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7IvGKkASuE

I assume I'll get for referencing any movie music composer, but I love so much of his work. He has independent compositions as well, but I love Asian harmonies and the energeticness.

>What the fuck is this rating

it's a ranking. and it's the most popular pieces voted on classicfm.
>>
>>63660570
thielemann is extraordinarily boring in just about everything i've heard him in
>>
>>63663144
Pretty pleb. But I guess that's to be expected on an English classical station.

>Highest ranked VC is the Bruch
Made me a little bit sick desu
>>
>>63663208
thielemann actually has a very personal style & original interpretations of works. which is why his conducting is so divisive. you may not like him, but i honestly don't see how he is boring.

rattle is boring and unpersonal for example.

>>
As someone who enjoys any kind of symphony since i don't specialize on it, what am i supposed to pay attention to? I feel like i'm supposed to develop a filter of some kind to know when something is good or not.
>>
>>63664235
Mahler 5. the timpani even gets to play the theme a few times.
Most Mahler symphonies have good use of timpani.
>>
>>63664381
canaries is GOAT
>>
>>63668295
it depends on the situation. in my experience an assistant conductor/principal player will do bowings before rehearsals start, writing them into all of the parts. for chamber and solo works i believe it's often intuitive, but composers (especially recent ones) will specify when they want something different.
>>
>>63660665
That's why they're mentioned after Brahms and Wagner when mentioning the classical canon

I also love Joe Hisaishi. He quotes a lot of great classical in his music, but also has some great melodies of his own. In the Nausicaa soundtrack, he builds on Handel's Sarabande, and makes the original feel unresolved.
>>
How do you write 'virtuosically' for piano if you don't play it at a concert level?
>>
>>63661229
>Although these works were long considered to be original, they are now known to be orchestrations of sonatas by various German virtuosi. The works on which the concertos are based were largely published in Paris, and presumably Mozart and his family became acquainted with them or their composers during their visit to Paris in 1763–64.

>>
Come listen to classical with us

http://mutantradio.org/player

Should be classical for the next ~48 hours unless if something fucks up
>>
>>63674968
short answer: you dont.

you try to, but if you dont play piano excellently, you're probably going to write something that is either too difficult, not virtuosic at all or sounds like shit. Tasteful virtuosity is quite hard to attain
>>
>>63675186
why the fuck would you want to listen to a MIDI rendition of a classical piece?

If you really want "classical" done on computers, try the Morrowind or Oblivion soundtracks.

Sebastian's (live, 1951) is my favorite; it is a great reading, with vigorous conducting and probably the most ideal singing for it. Szekely (the person whom Bartok shaped the role around) plays Bluebeard and Palankay Judith. both are great.

Dorati's (in GOAT) Mercury sound is also worth considering. Szekely also plays Bluebeard in that role, but he is a bit more worn by that point. Szony plays Judith and isn't the best in the role, but is decent at least. Dorati leads a straightforward and well paced reading.

Fricsay's is worth listening to for the conducting but it's in German.

Kubelik has a live '81 recording with the NY Phil which is both very well conducted and well sung.

If you want more modern sound Péter Eötvös's might be worth considering, haven't heard it myself yet but I've read some good things about it.

Thank you.
