Art Angels, like it or not, it's a very good entry point. If someone that never heard of Grimes try to listen to her older albums, he may be disappointed because all that stuff require some patience to get into. Art Angels is very instant.

I went backwards through her discography, starting at AA. I think starting at Halfaxa would've thrown me off honestly. Visions is a good compromise though.
Halfaxa is my favourite now, followed by AA and AA closely by Visions

Halfaxa is Grimes at her most natural state. She made the songs on the spot without planning ahead, like a stream of divine consciousness. This part of Grimes will always be in her. But in Art Angels (which i still like) its just obscured by her conscious effort to create structured "pop" songs. I have faith that Grimes will never completely suppress her natural gift. Maybe the rumored b-sides will contain some material in a similar vein to her earlier style.

Honestly, do you really expected AA to be a continuation of Visions? I'd say playing many live shows changed her perspective about her music. She definitely noticed that people prefer the faster/more upbeat songs to the slower/dreamy ones.
AA was necessary to be as catchy as possible to solidify her position in the music scene. Grimes played her cards right since AA was very well received and she became more popular than before. Where she will go from here, that's the question.
