Hey classicalfus, why doesn't anyone make opera productions like a film? I feel like there's probably a decent market for opera DVDs if they were more than just a glorified taping of a live performance. Why couldn't you direct and shoot one like a movie? Could you imagine Wagner with the staging, cinematography, and production quality of a film?

there's also Ingmar Bergman's production of Mozart's Magic Flute, though it's in Swedish.

They definitely need to bring this back. Why did it only last a few years?
>>63648481
there's surely a few more out there that are similar to that sort've film-style, but i'm not particularly sure which those might be.
anyway, i don't know why it isn't commonly done. it's most likely an expensive endeavor, and you need to be able to find competent directors who are willing to do it as well.

as interesting of an idea as it is cmon its 2016 you're lying to yourself if you really think there's really a market for it

The Artist was silent and did well. There is always atleast a small audience.

Because classical is meant to be experienced live. Especially opera, with staging, choirs entering from the wings, characters running through the audience along the aisles. You really need to be there. The only exception is if you have a shit seat way at the back of the hall.
The met do film versions with subtitles of many many operas, I've seen a couple shown here at cinemas.

Thanks, anon. Much appreciated.

You're welcome.

I used 'Aisles' though. Your quote is incorrect
>>63649958
My quote used autocorrect. Also they don't run through aisles or around islands either.
>>63650009
aisle
noun
plural noun: aisles
a passage between rows of seats in a building such as a church or theatre, an aircraft, or train.
nothing to do with islands there buster
>>63650045
I said they don't run around either, shiteposter. They don't go through aisles either.
>>63650069
they do depending on the opera. Last one I saw had characters all over the place, entering from wings, running through the aisles, surprise choirs right behind the audience. It was amazing.
>>63650112
L'orfeo? That's the only opera I've heard of doing that. The majority I've seen are rather traditional.
>>63650150
It was a recently released one
They actually made a video of the performance:

Thanks. That sounds interesting. In L'orfeo, the Bacchanates go through the aisles chanting while they attack Orpheus.

not exactly going-through-aisles-tier, but in the Audi Ring production the orchestra is fully visible, and the stage is actually in the shape of a Ring (which the orchestra goes around, counter clockwise). the stage actually reaches out pretty far, extremely close to audience seats.
haven't seen the DVD but i did watch a full broadcast of the whole thing. nothing but mediocre singing for the most part (and a dreadful, barking Hagen), but the production looked really quite great. would love to be there in person someday.
Similar question: have there been any full-blown adaptations of an opera to film? I mean like regular dialogue that follows the plot instead of operatic singing, and then adapts the music as a more traditional soundtrack. I think that could be really interesting if done right.
