The qtest German nun the other side of the black plague made some really dark stuff. She was wrought with visions from God that would set her eyes ablaze and made music to reflect the fear of a God who could possess her at any moment. Ensemble Belcanto's rendition of her Ordo Virtutum is insane even by today's standards, filled with wheezy gasps, atonal steccato chanting, and screaming.

in general, orthodox chants from south eastern Europe have this ominous flair due to the presence of tones which dont fit in the western semitone system, while not beeing exactly quarter tones. Not even sure its because of the turks, but most musicologists say that.

the funny thing about the romanians is that the "almost semi tones" are barely distinguishable, appearing almost only at the end of the phrases.

(not original poster) This piece by Gesualdo is indescribable and completely fucks me up. Not sure if others have the same experience, but dang, check it out. I like this particular performance as well - in a small room and you can really hear the different voices. The part around 2 min ("mi da morte" "gives me death") is brilliant counterpoint and so powerful.
