Discordance Axis - The Inalienable Dreamless
[2000]
I haven't got any really notion or knowledge on grindcore, but I must admit this was pretty rad. A 23 minute tape with the most mistakingly inappropriate cover, and from what I understand it's about Neon Genesis Evangelion? This looks like it's the odd-one-out of the genre.
The record gets really (really) good halfway through, but I couldn't say, because after three listens I still haven't got much of the ground covered. I know I like it though. Jigsaw and A Leaden Stride To Nowhere are favourites.
>>63641381

I don't mean to be a fanboy and inflate my ratings, but you guys rec'd some genre classics. This is a good one, maybe a bit on the softer, melodic side at times. "Woodbine" is a killer, "Feral Bones" is just a tiny bit annoying, but also rocks kind of hard. Same with "Cassock." "Boleskine" I can't really defend, ya know? This is crucial stuff though. 3.5/5

I don't think it's a stretch when I say I know the most about Zappa here (I know less than everyone else about every other artist so it's okay).
He has a lot of great shit but my god does he have some shit. Literally over half of his 100+ album discography is bad/awful. He's released an album nearly every year since 1966 (even after his death. He released two in 2015).
My advice: Listen to at least everything through 1975. It's a lot, but probably the best cut of his discography.
If you want an artist with consistently good output and a more digestible discography, do Boredoms. Zappa is kind of hard to attack from one angle, but it's a pretty rewarding discography to get through. I did his discography in January and pic is the result. If you want advice I'm here <3
>>63643165
If you want to be a Scaruffi drone *coughcough* aqam *coughcough* you should do Zappa. According to him, he's the greatest musician ever score-wise + he listed him as the greatest rock composer ever(wew).
http://www.scaruffi.com/vol1/zappa.html
wow
>>63643774
he did kinda produce Vliet's masterwork too.
>Melvins - Lysol
I like this a bit better than other Melvins I've heard. I've always found their stuff decent, but the problem I've had is that it's all just a little more silly or prankster-y than really necessary. This is pretty serious. The opener, "Hung Bunny," is sort of a Sunn O))) precursor and the gnarliest track here. It's pretty consistently doomy, moreso than their other albums, with the exception of "Ballad of Dwight Fry," which is kind of an unnecessarily silly detour, and the closer, "White Teeth," which is another of my favorites--closer to sludge. Pretty badass, masculine rock here.

1ST ROUND CONT
Nyar (asshole)
>Watkin Tudor Jones – Memoirs of a Clone
Thought this was going to be a letdown after the first few tracks. “Better than MaxNormal, but not by much.” Were my initial feelings. From the cover I expected it to somewhat introspective and maybe personal. A couple great beats on here, but I find his flow and lyricism on the first few songs to be pretty atrocious, especially on the first few songs. It picks up from thereon, and quite significantly. Almost every track after “Max Normal” were fantastic. Favorites were “If You Don’t Feel It” and the track with his name. Biggest surprise though was definitely the sweet guitar track. Try this if you REALLY loved Constructus or maybe wanna se this dude from a different angle.
6.0- Nyar moves on
Terminus (Shiba Inu)
>Ghazal – As Night Falls on the Silk Road
What a journey. Of course it drags a bit, and the first couple tracks are a tiny bit dull, but I think it serves itself well to be complementary instead of just boring, which this album only occasionally is. The third track, for example, is much shorter than the rest of these and yet does more in that time than the previous two combined. The next track is epic enough to make up for all of those small flaws, however. “Traces of the Beloved” and “Snowy Mountains.” are probably of my new favorites.
6.5+ Terminus JUST BARELY moves on
TecnomaLaser5000 (His own I think??)
>James Brown – The Payback
I already heard Live at the Apollo and didn’t really appreciate it in the way everyone else seemed to. Thankfully, I enjoyed this slightly more, but still felt like I was missing out. Very long-winded funk/soul songs, but I’m not so sure that’s a great thing. I felt like the tracks were occasionally satisfying, but I felt like the length didn’t serve the tracks well in comparison to something like Hot Buttered Soul. Favorite tracks were the title track and “Take Some…Leave Some.”
5.5+ Kevorkian moves on.
Guys, I really want to fuck Okkyung Lee. Is this normal?
cont >>63648546
Misha (Gabe)
>Charles Mingus – Let My Children Hear Music
It’s fucking Mingus, yo. I’ve said enough about this dude, but here’s some more: Probably the most accessable Avant-Garde musician ever but that’s not really that bad. The production here is particularly astounding and the variety in instrumentals and playstyles is fantastic. I wish for some more variety in the individual songs as opposed to throughout the album, and I wish it were as avant as people occasionally give Mingus credit for. “The Shoes of the Fisherman’s…” and “Hobo Ho” are two of his best.
7.5- Misha moves on
Mark And (Poodle)
>Gastr del Sol – Upgrade & Afterlife
Precisely why I’ve never been big on post-rock. Other than GY!BE and related projects, this has always been a genre I’ve never gotten super into. I know /daily/ loves it (might have to do something with how Jim O’Rourke is involved?? Love that man <333). I found it to be very boring and stretched out folk material. Some sweetish sounding piano ballads here, and “Hello Spiral” is soooo close to being incomplete that the fact that there’s really no payoff. Makes the preceding crescendos seem worthless. Final track is nice American primitivism for a while, but it’s ultimately two different 2 minute songs for 12 minutes instead of 4. A really dull version of Bad Timing. Really disappointed by this.
3.5+ Tripfriend BARELY advances (woah!)
Eruditey (catdog)
>Peste Noire – Ballade cuntre lo Anemi francor
Really interesting French (didn’t know what language it was until I looked it up lmao) Black Metal. Avant-Garde Post-Punk-y feel and pretty odd. I enjoyed the folkier elements, but the singer’s voice must’ve been a joke, otherwise it’s just a hilarious. The experimentation is cool, but just a bit pretentious-feeling imo. Then again it’s French.
6.0- Eruditey Moves on
final cont >>63648568
Trianglecubed (Australian Shephard)
>Simply Saucer – Cyborgs Revisited
Fug yes. Noisey heavy psych. While I’m not huge on the genre itself, I really respect what it’s doing. Gave me an early 80s/late 70s feel, but it surprised me when I found it came out in 1989. Then I found out it was recorded in 1974/75 and was no longer surprised. First track, “Bullet Proof Nothing,” and pt.1 of “Here Come the Cyborgs” were highlights. Loved when these guys got noisey and weren’t afraid of a little feedback like plenty of rock musicians of the time were. If you like LRD, TVU, or long-winded noisey psych jams give this a shot.
8.0- Trianglecubed moves on sry Dogwanderer I loved yer rec!!
SDC (Dogscape)
>Dead – Musical Abortions
Harsh. Real friggin harsh. Purposefully shitty. I wish it were perhaps a bit longer or a bit more thickskinned. Fuzz is great and all, but I just got tired of hearing loads of feedback for 20 minutes. Still loads of fun and if you like abrasive or lo-fi shit try this out.
3.5+ and GFR already moved on so xP
Fav albums this round were Rebore vol. 0, Cyborgs Revisited, Ver.1.28, and Let My Children Hear Music. Special shoutout to Warm Sofa for best rec as far as paying attention to my RYM, even though he lost ;^(

Grant Lee Buffalo - Fuzzy (1993)
>americana, alt-country, indie rock
The title track is amazing in its own dirgy little way, but the rest certainly pales. Its definitely all nice and servicable, but I feel that it just straddles the line between mediocre indie rock and good indie rock, going more towards the good side mainly due to the varied instrumentation, although the effected vocals nearly push it towards the mediocre side. Also, I like my alt-country with some more twang, come on.
2.5+
John Fahey - The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick (2004)
>american primitivism
Somehow this is my first time hearing it, and OBVIOUSLY I think its the greatest thing ever. The pieces here are immaculate, the performance is immaculate, and Fahey is funny as hell, I love that stage banter. Very close to a perfect music package in my eye, so ignore the 4.0 because that means near perfect on my scale, fuck it.
4.0
Macabre Unit - 6 Feet Below Sound 2: Buried Alive (2007)
>grime
Hard hitting grime with great, dubsteppy beats and fast as hell MCs. The lyrics are corny as hell though, horrorcore at its most generic. And sometimes it honestly needs to let up, this is just a 45-minute long pummeling, there needs to be some breathers. But other than that, good stuff.
3.0+
Oblivians - Desperation (2013)
>garage punk
I love Oblivians, but didn't know that they had put out a record after the one with Quintron until recently. And frankly it sucks compared to their other works. It holds some merit because I still love their scuzzy sound, but everything here sounds so neutered and bland compared to their best stuff. Not impressed.

what score from there it gets depends on how many things that stood out to me (both positively and negatively)
vice versa for negative scores and 2.5 is an album where nothing greatly stood out either positively or negatively
so for example, I enjoyed E2-E4, and the grooviness stood out in a good way, but the guitar stood out to me negatively, and if there was no guitar I'd say the groove brought it to about a 4, but the guitar (and a few other minor details) brought it down a half point collectively

Oh yeah, sorry.
>>63650986
Also, check out some 20th century Polish composers too. Lutoslawski is great
>>63651053
>>63651115
Thanks a lot!
This anon here >>63650198 posted Gould, I noticed there are a lot of recordings by him out there, which album should I be looking for from him? It's really difficult to pick one.
HOL UP
In celebration of my dubs (see >>63651133 ), I have a question:
Would a 32 album tourney be possible?
Not asking if it'd be plausible, but considering I got the first round of a 16 spot tourney I think I could do it.
Are there even 32 trips that visit /daily/? I think I could do this. Maybe I could get some friends/family to rec me stuff if I'm really stretching for content.
What do you think, /daily/? Could it be done?
>>63651175
the 81 digital one of the Goldberg Variations is the one i've heard. there's an earlier analog one i know.
>>63650986
Try some HIP stuff
>>63651175
I liked his version of the Well Tempered Clavier Book 1
>>63651201
It's hard enough to organize for a 16 man tourney because not everyone is on /daily/ every day. This could take weeks and I wouldn't want to be stuck on waiting for recs :///
>>63651201
herb guy's tourney has like 64 trips in it but idk how many of them still post
or you could do like the Hell Cup
>>63651175
Gould isn't great in Bach honestly, I'd recommend you look for recordings by Nikolayeva or Sviatoslav Richter when it comes to his keyboard stuff.
>>63651201
no, it's literally impossible
and illegal
>>63651201
>Are there even 32 trips that visit /daily/?
questionable but maybe? how about 24? how would that work structurally
>>63651292 yeah Hell Cup would be good too
>>63651292
Nah. Hell cup is 16 trips each with 4 albums. Still a great undertaking!
>>63651314
You're tempting me anon...
>>63651320
I could just keep the tourney up for a week or so for the people that only come here a couple times a month or something.
I think it could be done.
Also, does Hampy hate me? What have I done to upset him? I look up to him so much and he treats me like poo )):
>>63651300
Ugh... I saw positive reviews, that's the problem with classical, a lot of artists and different albums. Any albums from Nikolayeva or Richter?
>>63651397
Nikolayeva has a recording of the Goldbergs, don't think Richter does.
Though I'd recommend the WTC and partitas over them myself. Though if you still want to try Gould I've heard good things about the performance on here. It's on rutracker.
>>63651133
sorry to be a bother, but could I change my rec to Post Regiment - s/t?
>>63651467
No problem! :D
>>63651510
:^)
>>63651451
I was about to download the Variations, the 1981 recordings from Gould, it has amazing reviews... I am quite ignorant when it comes to the technical approach to classical music, but what does it make him bad at Bach?
>>63651524
He's mostly just eccentric. I mean, listen to this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S7I-BoaLB9k
It's marked largo for god's sake, compare it to anyone else like Richter or Feinberg. I also find him a bit on the dry side as well. He's not all bad though, certainly worth a listen. Really you're gonna have to get used to listening to lots of performances of the same pieces and finding a favorite.
The Replacements- Tim
slightly worse than Let It Be, because it has more ballads and while some are good, none reach the heights of the Let It Be ones (especially Androgynous, damn that's a jam)
2.5/5
Which one of you got the California noise comp? Was it even someone from /dilly/?
bump i guess

I've been lurking on /mu/ for months now, and I still cannot figure how these charts and schedules on /daily/ are supposed to work, anyone willing to explain?

I've loved the albums I've heard so far in my life, which to be fair is very few:
>Hot Rats
>Freak Out!
>Sheik Yerbouti
>Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch
>Hot Rats
And TMR of course, but that's not his album.

yay a Beefheart section
>Should I do them in the order they're on there, or get people to choose?
I think getting people to choose or just picking
would be fine but that's just how I like to do things
>>63655218
I second this post
>>63655218
>>63655266
I'm keeping my beefheart. But choose 3 albums to replace with those three, and i will.
>>63655287
I only heard Safe As Milk and Decals of those. Safe As Milk is definitely an essential part of Beefheart's discog so keep that one. Bluejeans seems to regarded as one of their most mediocre releases so you might wanna discard that. Decals is very good but I don't know how it compares to the rest, I think doggo knows more about that.
>>63655287
Remove Strictly Personal, put in Mirror Man.
Remove le deer album and put in Shiny Beast.
Listen to Doc on your free-of-chart time.
>>63655368
Yeah that's probably about right, Doc's roughly a continuation of Shiny Beast's style so I guess if he likes that one enough he can go for Doc later.
>>63651201
most of these are active
not sure about: dailyfriend, ricebeansandegg, mortimer, this trip is a mess but so am i. And there's some that visit rarely, like dam's-jans, moonjacques, edcv, !GZO, warm sofa and anonymousé.

Hi /daily/, how are you all doing?
It just started raining here and I have to learn for exams, so that's pretty shitty. I am listening to Torts' pick for my tournament and it's fucking stellar, ∆^3 vs Torts is probably the best match-up so far, will be hard to decide who goes on.
Also I haven't given any album a heart in a while, could someone rec me something I'd love based on my last hearts (The Universe of Jacques Demy, A Woman Under the Influence, Satantango, Carol, 8 ½, Faust)?
>>63656331
Also I haven't given any movies* fuck
maybe something similar to Carol would be best, goddamn that movie is so comfy

Cool, I think we have similar enough tastes but HeyAnon doesn't like the only Demy he's seen and I can't take people seriously who don't like fun.
>>63656331
Pretty alright. I'm not sick anymore which is nice, and my new apartment is almost completely set. Feels great. Right now i should be studying but i can't really pull myself together.
Listening to this.
>>63656497
Yep, kind of the same here.
That looks interesting, what does it sound like?
>>63656504
Yeah it's a very nice album. I feel like Malagasy music is quite unique, it doesn't really remind me of any other African music (which makes sense i guess). At points there is a quite strong European influence, for example they use accordions. There's also some great vocal and fiddle performances.
>>63656117
I'll add it to my to-listen tag on rym, just for you.
>>63656331

This was definitely the best duel on here. Sorry ∆^3, I really loved your pick, but I loved Torts' slightly more :(
Can I get a rec Torts? Then the second round can commence!

Johannes Brahms - Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 31
Maurizio Pollini (piano), Quartetto Italiano
So far my Dad has really good taste. Though most of these ratings are after one listen since I'm going through and ripping them all for him.
Cba writing a review for everyone of them, if any of you care what I thought about any albums just ask me.

>>63656974

Which duels first?
>>63657104
I've liked all the Janacek I've heard, so you have a very decent chance!
>>63657123
fucc I posted the wrong cover for the specific recording I only have it digital and I use classic paintings for album covers of classical recordings :^)
Pic related is the correct cover. Not a big dealio but oh well.
>>63657122
Yeah I've never heard Graceland before, I liked Prine's Diaomonds in the Rough quite a bit so I'm looking forward to that too. I'll need to tell him that some cool shitposters approve.
Bunny is getting better. Her taste is fucking weird, she hates Critical Care which is basic timothy hay mixture in liquid form but today she got anti-furball paste for cats and she seemed to like it although it smells memey like Gutalin

I'm not going to plan anything forward, but I finally listened to this Scott Walker album I grabbed some time ago, and I like it a lot. It feels a bit like if Beach Boys wanted to make a sad/melancholic album.
I'm feelin a strong 7 to light 8
highlights: We Came Through, Funeral Tango
also why there are no calendars for march and april in the archive
>Sonic Youth - s/t
It's pretty decent. Some of the basslines are solid and the guitar work is pretty nice for the most part, the first 2 tracks in particular are great. After that though it seems pretty aimless and is pretty much Sonic Youth ripping off some older post-punk bands. Still a decent listen overall
6/10
>Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats - Blood Lust
Hey, some of this is almost radio-friendly. Uncle Acid's "thing" is kind of an esoteric aesthetic based on early 70's metal and Sabbath's "Planet Caravan," but whatever, I happen to find it a cool aesthetic. Music-wise, what carries this album for me are the stomping rhythms on each song. Each song is more or less the same formula with--ya know--like zero dynamism, which would make this somewhat better than "good" or "decent." The first two tracks are awesome and hypnotic, the third sucks, "13 Candles" is pretty great, actually, "Ritual Knife" is a bit of a mindfuck. Decent, may or may not revisit. 3-3.5/5
>>63654276

>Black Tambourine - Complete Recordings
Lo-fi noise pop. It's pleasant. I can't for the life of me fathom why this is as highly regarded as it is.
>Weed - Deserve
Dinosaur Jr. and My Bloody Valentine's nerdy illegitimate son drops out of college after being heartbroken by a girl way out of his league, then decides to dedicate his life to smoking dank, listening to noise rock and crafting the absolute thiccest guitar tone known to man.
Or something like that. It's great.

Pretty music that feels good. Has the downside of strange wonky voice samples (at least I think they are voice) that turns me off and there are times when the music gets unnecessary busy when staying simple is preferred. Otherwise not at all a bad listen.
