I don't enjoy SJ and MPP (as well as any material after), but their more Black Dice-like stuff (HCTI, even bits of Danse) are really cool. Are there any bands to check out that blend harsher noise with more saccharine melodies, because I find myself sorely lacking good noise pop
>>
MPP is my all time fave from them. Alot of /mu/ will say it's too poppy or lacks stuff from their older stuff, but i've always gravitated more to electronic/sample music. Lately though stg been my fave.

Painting With isn't really catching on with me though.

New to anco here, here's my ranking of all the albums i've heard so far (from best to least good)

>Merriweather Post Pavilion
really liked how each part was different, yet all syncopated on a great level, only problem i had with it was general mixing (ie sometimes instruments way louder than vocals)
9/10, favorites are In The Flowers, Summertime Clothes/Daily Routine
>Feels
This one reminds me a lot of Radiohead's In Rainbows in the sense it's romantic and warm, yet also desolate at times; i really liked the pacing of the album and the instrumentals were p good too
8.5/10, favorite tracks are Banshee Beat and Loch Raven
>Fall Be Kind EP
this was a bit short for my taste, but it still worked pretty damn well with me and i enjoyed the sampling and different instruments throughout (ie the flutes in graze, grateful dead sample); i'll prolly relisten soon
8.25/10, favorite track is either Graze or What Would I Want? Sky
>Sung Tongs
i haven't really taken the time to recheck this out either, but even though i'm not a big fan of the folk vibe the technical stuff is pretty cool
7.5/10 from what past me said
can't really think of a favorite track, but i liked the first one and softest voice

i'm thinking i should go for strawberry jam next, is that a good idea? alternatively i might check out person pitch since i've heard it's really good
>>
>>63645369

I really feel like everyone fails to realize how perfect Feels is. People are always talking about how it would be better if this or that were changed, whereas I feel like if anything about it were altered it would make it less perfect. I really feel like it's one of the best albums ever made and if it came from some other band it would be seen as being on the same level as something like Close to the Edge or Laughing Stock. I just feel like it completely flew over people's heads, because when I listen to it I hear what to me is one of the most beautiful and sublime albums ever made.
>>
>>63645876
oh, and also their solo stuff if you haven't already along with their other EPs

audacity is so easy to use and free, you can record with a laptop mic and it'll sound super cool and lofi. you don't need a lot of skill with instruments either, just a lot of creativity and energy. you can do it bro!!!
>>
yo I did a quick little diddy in audacity

^this song^ has the same root note and length as cobwebs, and I thought it added a nice layer to the song:

>>
>>63645800
I really feel like they go against everything Animal Collective had built up to and achieved in the 2000's. So that's why I don't like them on a philosophical level. Just as far as the quality of the albums go, I think Centipede Hz is one of the most audibly forced, uninspired, and repulsive albums ever made, and on Painting With it just sounds like they completely gave up. You could at least tell they were trying on Centipede Hz. As a result of this, Painting With ends up being a deeply depressing and painful listen. I almost feel sorry for them when I listen to it.
>>
>>63644844
cobwebs and street flash are pretty great!! lyrically at least. all the songs are stellar lyrically

Wow, really? My Gnip Gnop single came in the mail at the end of last week and I just haven't gotten around to listening to it yet, but I'm seriously worried if people think Hounds of Bairro is worse than anything on Painting With as I think Lying In the Grass is hands down the worst thing Animal Collective have ever put out. I kind of had hope for it being better than Painting With as the B sides from Centipede Hz were better than the rest of the album.
>>
>>63646173
>he doesn't like lying in the grass
>>
>>63646195
With Avey Tare sounding like he's throwing up over annoying "Boioioioi" sounds throughout the entire song, paired with excruciatingly bad songwriting, uh yeah, I don't like Lying In the Grass.
>>
>>63646267
it's the second best song on the album after the burglars and it almost has the best use of hocketing out of anything on it m8

>>
>>63646416
I honestly think Feels is their best album. Given how apposed everyone's reaction to Feels is to mine, I almost feel like I'm hearing a completely different album from what everyone else is hearing. It's actually really weird to me.
>>
Is Slasher Flicks good?
>>
>>63646505
Yeah, it's got better songwriting than anything on Centipede Hz and Painting With if you ask me. At this point, I almost feel like the solo albums are better than actual Animal Collective albums, because there's less demand for them to put out solo albums, so when one of the members puts out something outside of Animal Collective it's more likely to be because they actually had good songs that they wanted to put out, and not just get another Animal Collective album over and done with.

To me, Hounds of Bairro is similar to Summing the Wretch. So if you like that song then you'll like it. Gnip Gnop is lots of fun though.
>>
Can't get enough of Wide Eyed lately, not sure if it's just that it's interesting to hear a different voice over some weird AnCo instrumentals though.

>>63641250
I used to think Guys Eyes was the low point of MPP and now I think it's one of their best songs. The harmonies between Avey and Panda (especially towards the end) are arguably the best of their career.

Golden Gal is also the best track on PW.

>>63646416
Although I hate to admit it, Sung Tongs has a bit of filler. MPP or Feels are by far their most accomplished albums
>>
Centipede Hz was a better album, but PW had better songs. Agreed?
>>
>>63646416
Feels is my favorite tho. Sung Tongs is definitely the most "AnCo" album but it's doesn't have the spine chilling sentimentality that Feels has.

I'm fairly certain it's 320. Only concern is that the vocals are a bit harder to hear than everything else, but not as much that it's bothersome.
>>

Same

I understand the criticism, but I can't force myself to hate it, or at least think it's a mediocre record.
>>
>>63646505
It's a grower.

The album would be much better if Avey's vocals wasn't drowned in reverbs and filters (and the overall production too)
>>
>>63648735
burglars is pretty good but a lot of songs on chz connect with me more on an emotional level

>>63646335
Same desu senpai. Golden Gal is amazing.
>>
>>63646673
I disagree with your statement on Sung Tongs. I feel like the most "filler" song on the album is the softest voice. But I could see how someone could be turned off by the 12 minutes of Visiting Friends.

A lot of people say the last 3 songs are poor closers to the album. I think perhaps the last song could have been better, but Mouth Wooed Her and Good Lovin Outside are two in the same songs that kindof accumulate the ambient-acoustic-electronic-freakfolk sound that the album is so well known for. Without those songs, the feeling of the album would be much more thematically scattered, but they make the album feel more varied around a central theme, if that makes any sense.

I also apprecitate the way the songs seem to move as a whole, like a tree swaying in the wind almost. Everything that is contributing to the song, every sound is contributing in their own unique way, but move and flow as a whole. I think it's very impressive and interesting/fun to listen to.
