Honestly, they are just really ambiguous. Swans is both the bare minimum and little details through out their whole discography. Not trying to lick thier buthole, but they have gone through so much time and different genres, while still collecting weird thoughts that Michael Gira either chants or shouts.
In other words, they are mainly popular because "So old a band that is so edgy/crazy for trying different stuff with deep meanings."
