The mating rituals of narwhals

well the peak sexual maturity of a male narwhal is generally around 8 to 9 years old, and around this time they start to seek out female narwhals around the ages of 4 to 6 to start the breeding process. the average mating time is in the spring around mid april, much like most wild mammals, and after fertilization the female narwhals give birth after a 15 month gestation period, unlike the 9 month human pregnancy.
the selection for narwhal mates is typically done by the female based on multiple factors such as over all health, size, and length of their protruding tusks. it is believed that tusk size is relative to hormone levels within male narwhals because of a growth in length during periods of sexual maturity.
over all the mating rituals and traditional breeding capabilities of narwhals dont differ very much from that of their fellow aquatic mammals
