I wouldn't say Scaruffi is a contrarian besides his profile on The Beatles. I mean the guy has a 1-10 point scale but most good albums have good scores (7.5 and above). What's really weird is that his ratings never get too high as he's never given any album a 10 and 9's are just a few, and most albums with really high ratings are the actually patrician, so i'd say it would be more accurate to say he's the patrician one (and let's remember, fantano gave TPAB a 10... That's not really "patrician")

Christgau is a pathetic and inconsistent reviewer and Pitchfork only gives high score for overly-publicized albuns and major darlings from the music scene (Radiohead, Bjork, Kanye West, Animal Collective).
Anthony and Scaruffi are the only trustable sources (props for Piero since he didn't even make money reviewing albuns). However Piero has been doing it for almost 4 decades when Anthony started reviewing albuns 4~5 years ago. Also "greatness" and taste are completely subjective, making innovation the best achievement in music (like in all other arts) and the best method to rates an album and its relevance which is why Scaruffi is the best source of music.
Btw, explain how he is even a contrarian. He pretty much praises acclaimed and non-"le avant-garde" bands like Guns N Roses, Pink Floyd, Doors, Metallica, AC/DC, Alanis Morissette, Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones in his site.

I've mainly only seen Christgaus scores on classic albums when I'm on Wikipedia and looking up some info. Honestly his scores really don't seem that crazy. Yes post 2000 he becomes insane but other than that his reviews seem pretty good.
