I'm not an expert on jazz, I listen and enjoy it very casually, but I once read that in order to really understand and appreciate Jazz you should start playing it yourself. Maybe that's what's keeping you from fully enjoying it.

Find a compilation album by some old fart like Duke Ellington or Dizzy Gillespe or Louis Armstrong. When you're done with them you can move onto the hard bop and cool jazz scenes centered around Miles Davis in the 50s, and then you can listen to Kind of Blue.
