I practiced the violin from I was 14 till I was 19. I'm 23 now and considering selling it. It would net me about $2000 but the feels are just too much. I didn't get that good. I never had any confidence in my playing and I always overreached because my teachers weren't really that competent. I lost my nerve when I entered university.

For what it's worth, it did give me something though. Violin is the instrument I know the best after all. I actually have a pretty comprehensive idea of what it can do. That knowledge and experience is invaluable in my composition. That's something I have to admit. Composers who have never played around with a string instrument can't write for strings to save their lives. Even acknowledging this though. I couldn't possibly let it go.

I started playing the guitar a year ago and it's a completely different thing. I can play it musically from the get go. It's a lot easier, you know? I feel like my musicality has matured, since I've had the opportunity to just let loose on an instrument were technique isn't such a barrier. ...I wonder if I could pick my violin up again and learn the stuff I didn't manage to learn. Like vibrato and fluently moving between positions so I at least could use it for recording myself playing solos in my music. Gee, I'm torn.

Pic related. It's my violin.

Kind of an awkard post but, hi. I am a shitty bedroom vocalist with a USB mic and I really want to do vocals for people. Here is a sample of what I sound like:

https://clyp.it/vhe0eyqu

I enjoy music like Sufjan and Animal Collective, but I wouldn't mind expanding to other genres as well. I can play a little guitar and a hint of piano.

If you would like to do something with me, shoot me an email: [email protected]

Have a nice day.

anon I know exactly what you're saying! i played trumpet from 8-18 or so, but gave it up when i went to youknee as well. i've since studeied drums, gutiar/bass, keys... but even though i haven't played the horn in years it was always the most fun for me, and it's the instrument i was easily the best at. but the point is, learning an instrument properly (knowing what it is you are doing with it and what the instrument is doing from a musical point of view) makes it easier to learn and understand music from then on.

i've recently wanted to learn violin or cello. anon pls gib

>going on youtube channels to have a specific synthesizer explained to you.

This is the wrong way of looking at things. What you want to do is study synthesis concepts from the ground up so that you can understand every synthesizer.

If you're too lazy to do that, then maybe music production isn't for you.

Guys, who is active in this thread right now? I want to do a game like that old game from when you were a kid. Where someone would draw the head of someone on paper then fold it and the next person had to draw the body, then the next the feet etc. Only we won't fold the paper.

I want us to take it in turn to paste parts to make a song. Can start with a drumloop or whatever, next person adds more drums or guitar or bass or them screaming or whatever. And we see what comes out.

Anyone want to play?

is it beyond laughable that i use garageband as my main DAW? I feel like it gets overlooked a lot because "ooo comes with your mac" and all of the lame presets and loops it has. But once you figure out how to get behind the presets (which was a lot easier to do in previous versions), it's decently capable.
Either that, or it's just that I've been using it since 2008 and you can probably make almost anything sound good if you work with it for 8 years.

>Addictive drums for example. Are there wave files I can copy and paste in whatever way I want to use them?

Didn't get time to reply to this in the other thread - drum sounds, kits and the MIDI files each kit uses are all held in a single *.xpak file. I tried the patently bloody obvious first like changing the file extension to zip and rar, then tried opening the file as-is in 7-zip but it wasn't identified as an archive.

Next I tried audio file extensions, wav, flac and ogg, no joy, tried opening as raw audio in Wavelab hoping that at least part of the file would be readable but no.

Googling "xpak unpacker" however, reveals that the Quake game engine uses *.pak files as archives for maps - this might be your next step but I didn't go any further down that rabbit hole - it might help.

Keyboard is the best instrument to let loose on, since it's easy to visualize harmonic or melodic interval and interaction when you can visually see the distance of steps. and for letting loose pick a key signature and start from their, IMO it's easier to be musical when using a key with atleast 3 sharps or flats, and even though a major scale is a major scale it still inspires different motifs somehow.

My experience with the Violin as my first instrument was honestly not very useful, I learned to play it without understanding the very essential basics of music theory, and when I came back to music, looking into the why definitely helped. I started to appreciate the violin as an instrument after I gained that extra knowledge, as well as from a deepening sense of what music I enjoy from listening to all the /mu/-core plus whatever else I found interesting.

the Viol-family with it's strings in 5th intervals is the most intuitive spacing for stringed instruments, when we look at 4 fingers we can play the entire scales in any position, and makes it simple to make a chord between 2 strings by fingering up or below on the next string over, in comparison to that 5th interval,

Layer sounds like you would piano chords. You wouldn't have 3 c notes layered over each other in the same octave and everything. you can mess around with contrasting timbres, some sawy bass and airy smooth layer over, or vice versa. take a sequence, bounce it to audio, and transpose it up or down a few steps, and maybe effect it or reverse it or anything you want and layer that over the original. idk those are a few ideas.

I posted this in the last thread, but had to go before I got an answer and/or the thread died.

Basically, I've been killing myself for the past week trying to get a voice in a song I'm working on to sound electric; basically how they did Electro's voice in the last spiderman film.

I've searched and searched, and tried and tried, but can't for the life of me figure out how they did it.

If anyone can help me out here I would really appreciate it.

Meant to post this reply last night - Electro's voice to me sounds pitched down a ways and also either ring modulated (think Dalek but not as intense) or with a fast LFO (with the rate on the verge of audio frequency, around 20 Hz maybe) acting on the volume level.

First off you need the vocal to be in a batman voice. If the voice is normal, you wont have the same effect no matter how much you pitch it. Notice how Fox speaks in a low "I AM BATMAN" voice throughout the movie.

The its a matter of clever layering.

One clean voice
Second with a heavy tremollo effect, some distortion to bring out the presence.
A third pitched down and boosted the fuck out of 30 hz.

smash some tape saturation on top and fuck around with bosting cutting frequencies.

But remember these guys are sound engineers of the higest callibre, they dont do anything else than this shit so dont fret if you dont manage it the first time.

I'm using Ableton and its stock beat repeat on a sample that's just on a regular audio track. It works find and sounds good in the DAW but when I export and listen to the file, the sample is either silent or has a different beat repeat than the one I hear in the software. Is there a workaround to this?

as a fairly green producer/ableton user, is it worth it for me to upgrade from live lite to studio? i'm a student so in terms of money, it would be more worth it to upgrade straight to studio than standard. however, i'm wary of dropping money on a software upgrade because i know it won't necessarily make my music better. i'm also thinking of buying an mpd32, but again, i'm not sure how much better my music will become. any thoughts?

First thing to look at (for me) would be that pad - it sounds nice but each chord varies in level too much, the very first time it appears is about the level I'd sit the whole part at.

Having said that, you might well have adjusted the pad to sit better with the vocals and the guitar that you took out but I'm treating it as I hear it right now.

Also the piano rises in level when you use the stereo chorus effect on it at the end, it would need brought down a little so all you notice is the stereo widening and not the level going up.

Again, that might be because of the vocals not being there and it might sound fine when they are there so, if so, ignore.

This is probably a hardware related issue desu.
>>
>>63518330

No worries anon. You can probably look at editing the velocity values for the pad because nothing else is changing, but if you reduce the velocity on the piano when the effect is active it might change the sound too much (velocity might be tied to the piano's filter as well as level) so I'd do some volume automation instead in that case.

Timeline editing in Ableton is called Arrangement View - at the top right of the Ableton window you'll see image related and you click the button with the horizontal lines for Arrangement View and the vertical lines for Session (Grid) View - pressing your tab key also toggles between them.

Every instrument has its own limitations, the job of an arranger is to know these limitations. Unless you're gonna write a complex solo or concerto piece then you don't really need to play the instrument.

>>
>>63520450
Those who did: Bach, Vivaldi, Mozart, Paganini, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Sibelius... most of the greats did dabble in violin.

Those who didn't: Chopin, Berlioz, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Schönberg (most of these are pretty obvious).
>>
>>63520562
>Adler's orchestration does the job, have you seen how elaborate the instrument guides are on there?
While good, I firmly believe it isn't enough. The nuances and feeling of what comes naturally for the instrumentalist is hard to imagine, even with guidance. It would be similar to me trying to undestand what it means to play a brass instrument. I've read through Adler and Rimsky-Korsakov's notes on the matter, listened to CDs, watched videos and read the scores, but I still don't know what it feels like to be out of breath, and how it affect the player's psychology, how it hurts your lips, what parts of the range or what intervals feel the most tricky and how it feels tricky... you know? Being an instrumentalist is a very physical experience, all the nuances of playing the violin can not be covered by books and videos.

That's rough. I usually have around 12-20 just for a single piece alone.

>no Max for Live

That's basically a whole fucking library of effects and instruments you aren't getting; not to mention, Max let's you create whatever the fuck you want.

>no operator
>no sampler

Honestly, it's worth it for those two right there. You want to dedicate a good amount of time learning the ends and outs of these because they are fucking amazing.

>no external instrument

This is really only needed if you plan on using VST plugins like Battery, within Ableton drum rack.

>no EQ 8

This one is pretty much needed if you plan on mastering anything.

>no spectrum

Not needed, but useful as fuck.

All the default sample packs suck desu. You can make them sound cool after a shit ton of tweaking, but you're basically going to be ditching them for higher quality samples and VSTs as soon as possible.

>tl;dr, consult with an instrumentalist if you wanna write a solo or concert piece, but for most symphonic uses you don't really need to play every instrument to know how to write a symphony.
While true, the composer's knowledge of different instruments limit their writing. Tchaikovsky was killer flute player, and wrote things for flute that nobody ever dreamed of. That made his music more interesting and novel. Wagner's harp parts are almost impossible to play, so you have to either not play what he wants or compensate with extra harps, which considering already has a lot of them is unrealistic. In the end, the better you know the instrument, the better you can draw the magic out of it.

>>
New to hip hop production but a friend of mine thinks I'd be good at it. Where can I find obscure samples? Mostly just drum samples because making drum beats in a DAW is fucking suffering.
>>
>>63522561
Bro let me tell you what's going to happen.

You're gonna spend about 4 hours looking for samples, before giving up and just downloading a pack of loops and one shots.

You'll dick around with the one shots for a while, realize you have no fucking idea what you are doing, and just copy past the same loop for about 2 minutes.

After that you'll try to come up with a melody, realize you have no musical theory knowledge, so you winde up tossing whatever default saw instrument you can fund, and drag down a single midi note to probably around A1 for that buh buh bass sound. You'll then have that loop around every half bar.

you'll then try adding some beeps and boops just like you heard in your favorite kanye track. It won't sound anything close to it, and you'll be completely out of scale, but at this point, you really don't give a fuck.

You'll then record some vocals. Toss in a shitty reverb with way too long delay time, sit back listen to it, show your buddy who will tell you it's sick shit regardless, and post it on facebook citing yourself as the next best thing to happen to the world of hip hop since Jay-Z.

After this you'll continuesly be "working" on your next piece for the next year or so, but in reality you got bored with it, and didn't want to come to grips that you lack any technical no how to making a good song or having the discipline to actually learn.

It's all super low-tech m8. This was made entirely with sampler and chains of default Ableton effects. I dunno if this is juvenile or a stupid process but often I will get some loop and run it through as many effects as possible and find some motif out of that chaos, record only that section, then that will become my sample to play around with. I guess a cool thing about making noise is that it's pretty much up to you to decide how to go about it, even more so than other shit.
