Can someone explain the appeal of this piece of shit to me? I can appreciate the fact that it's way ahead of its time and it progressed music as a whole quite a bit, but I don't find anything enjoyable about it. The atmospheres are nice and the effects are a nice touch, but the vocals are tied together with the minimalist instrumentals in an attempt to sound dreary and moody that comes across as monotonous and drab. Don't even get me started on the incessantly pretentious pseudo-depressive lyrics that spark absolutely no emotion whatsoever in me. Talking Heads wrote a better Joy Division song than anything from the actual Joy Division with The Overload in the following year.

OP: As someone with diagnosed clinical depression, there's nothing dark or far-reaching about any of the lyrics. Their not poetic and you're fooling yourself if you think they are. Oddly enough, they're still nowhere near the most grinding part of the album.

They spark emotion in many good people anon, their lyrics were pretty iconic.

Also, it's supposed to convey the kind of depression that makes you feel nothing at all, just dread and emptiness, which it does in an incredible way. It sets what it wants to do and nails it perfectly, few albums do it that well.

This album is my life.

Extremely relatable lyrics and an atmosphere that is cold as ice.

It might be angsty, but not every depression-themed album has to be super avant-garde and philosophical to be authentic.

The ghostly vocals also do a great job in my opinion, but I can understand why you might find them annoying and I generally see why you hate Joy Division.

Relisten to, and play closer attention:

New Dawn Fades
Atmosphere
She's Lost Control
Shadowplay
I Remember Nothing

OP: In all honesty, I wouldn't be returning to it as many times as I have if it wasn't so highly regarded by many respectable people.

Basslines for days
The atmospheric guitarwork
Hannet's hit or miss production techniques, even when they take away from the songs they're interesting
Ian's voice and melodies
One of the moodiest punk albums ever, its astounding that the band never saw Ian's death coming. It oozes depression and despair

You either like it or you don't, but I can't see how you've heard it "5 times" and don't even get the appeal. I'm not big on lyrics either and I understood it long before I fell in love with the album

>The atmospheric guitarwork
...Do you know what "atmospheric" actually means or...?
>Hannet's hit or miss production techniques, even when they take away from the songs they're interesting
The production is fine. It's practically the same production you'd hear on the early Sonic Youth albums. The only difference is that Sonic Youth's final product is, y'know... good.
>Ian's voice and melodies
Ian's voice is probably the most irritating part. He puts on such a fake voice that tries so desperately to be dramatic and it sounds so corny. And what melodies? He monotonously sings in the root of the chords throughout practically the entire album.
>One of the moodiest punk albums ever, its astounding that the band never saw Ian's death coming. It oozes depression and despair
I feel nothing but complete and utter boredom listening to it to the point of frustration, if that's what you mean by "moody."
>>

Compared to Joy Division, Talking Heads just sound like a fucking joke. Maybe it sounds crazy but maybe, just maybe there are opinions ok? Like maybe some just might like it ok? It's just theoretical but just maybe you just don't like the music made by Joy Division. You came here to ask why is this album appealing to people that enjoy it, but do you think you start fucking liking it after you've heard that? It's like you're a fucking teenager whose mind changes just with a snap of a fingers because of others opinions. Grow the fuck up OP...

OP: The funny thing is nobody has changed my mind or given me a legitimate reason to. It's angsty pretentious teen hipster shit for people who think they're more cultured for listening to a grown man whine in a monotonous singing voice over boring instrumentals rather than listening to a teen with a swoop haircut whining over a lame chugging breakdown. I just can't imagine people actually liking this thing for anything other than the fact that you're expected to like it. Unlike every single pleb that acts like Unknown Pleasures is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'm not going to suddenly think it's brilliant because their lead vocalist actually killed himself. Kid Cudi sounds like he's on the verge of killing himself on his new album. If he does, are we gonna all change our minds and consider that garbage a masterpiece? I sure fucking hope not.
