I'm just not a big fan of Marillion. Or Dream Theater. I love prog. From subtly composed and sorrowful, to full blown prog death. But I've never enjoyed either of these bands.

I don't like modern hip-hop, so I really don't understand why it's so good. Always feels weird when I talk about 90's classics with someone, then they love MBDTF. Why? Modern hip-hop is nothing like 80's-90's hip-hop. We shouldn't even call it hip-hop.

I feel the same way. I only like a couple of songs off this album. It feels like it's trying a bit hard maybe? Hard to pinpoint what I don't love about it. And actually listened to it earlier today but after John Wayne Gacy Jr I just want to listen to something else. Lovelovelove Carrie and Lowell though.
I guess Arctic Monkeys AM would be mine but most people on this board know that album's trash.

Still doing nothing for me. I can appreciate the fact that it's way ahead of its time and it progressed music as a whole quite a bit, but I don't find anything enjoyable about it. The atmospheres are nice and the effects are a nice touch, but the vocals are tied together with the minimalist instrumentals in an attempt to sound dreary and moody that comes across as monotonous and drab. Don't even get me started on the incessantly pretentious pseudo-depressive lyrics that spark absolutely no emotion whatsoever in me. Talking Heads wrote a better Joy Division song than anything from the actual Joy Division with The Overload in the following year.

I think Sufjan is fairly pretentious. Writing 70 minute concept albums, using an orchestra, using irregular meter and other elements from 20th century classical music, having elaborate rhyming schemes and really a lot more. Pretentious really doens't mean much more than ambitious. I personally love it and I think many artist become boring once they grow out of their pretentiousness.

Calling something pretentious is a completely moot argument. Pretentious means that the artist is making their music more complex specifically for the sake of impressing other people, and not because it's what they want to do. And it's impossible to prove that artists like Sufjan Stevens aren't making their music the way that they do for any reason other than that's the way they want to do it.

Ironically, pop stars are pretty much the only artists that could literally be accused of being pretentious. They literally cater their music to what they think will impress people, and they shape their public personas for the sake of creating a reputation that will make people pay attention to them.
