my man, all you do is start playing an artist and other similar artists will be suggested to you

what else do you want?

No, more like, Ryan "The Unemployed" Dombai
the algorithm is the tastemaker now
>>
>>63487427
i know a couple people who basically use algorithms sure

but the word of someone you respect will always trump any algorithm because he creates desire in you that relates to another person. and of course i'm also speaking of the way people write and talk which creates a kind of intrigue and desire for that person, for the musicians, for the work.

The majority of people (your parents, your coworkers, other such plebs) will be fine with whatever's present in the most easily-accessible medium. Spotify and its algorithms seem to be today's "whatever's on the radio," for instance. But there will always be a niche that wants more, and that's really what criticism, be it music or otherwise, seeks to service. 99% of everything is shite, so you need someone to find the one percent. Not a computer.
>>
>>63487881
>you need someone to find the one percent
damn, music is in a fucked up place if pitchfork is only showing us the 1% T B H
>>
>>63487881
My problem with algorithms is mostly that they wildly fluctuate in quality. I listen to Kanye a lot so it suggest me Common and Nicki Minaj. One Im very interested in, the other not so much, and this applies to every suggested artist, it becomes suffering to dig through it. Much easier to let someone else do that.
>>
>>63487878
Eh I dunno. Video game journalism seems to be more corrupt on-the-whole than music journalism, and there are a lot of reasons for that that I want to leave for another time (or maybe someone more versed in the issue can pick it up). To my knowledge, Gamergate had a few legitimate concerns before they descended into fits of misogyny and unjustified rage.

>>63487748
Some of the stuff of La Di Da Di is insane with how complex it is
>>
>>63487928

>>
>>63487928
Well, they're not anymore. But someone else will show up eventually. Every generation has its voice. Maybe it's not TMT but they're the closest thing we've got at the moment.

>>63487942
Yes, that's exactly the problem. Like you're on Pandora, and you're listening to, say, the Radiohead station. Then it puts on Coldplay. Then Muse. Then Iron and Wine for some reason. Then you run out of skips. It's aggravating. It's one of the reasons I pirate everything.

And yet the complexity stays within fairly simple structures, which I think is occasionally more impressive than guys like Hill and Chippendale. I mean, they're monsters, but he's more like a warrior monk. He just sits there and hammers away in the same pattern, over an over.

He's my idol. If I ever actually start drumming one of these days I want to do it like him.

>Now, because Tiny Mix Tapes is a family-friendly publication, and because we here don’t want to corrupt our younger, more impressionable readers, an understanding of Flatbush ZOMBiES’ aptly-titled album requires a note on psychotropics like LSD. The thing about LSD that makes it so essential for big city livin’ rap folk like FBZ is that it’s able to dissociate ego from consciousness, helping one to forget themselves. This creates the illusion that one is experiencing reality unmediated, tunneling into the truth of existence. Meanwhile, hallucinations unfold and senses mix with each other in a phenomenon known as synesthesia. Combined with the loss of ego, which according to Meechy Darko ushered in a sort of rebirth of conscience — hence the group being a bunch of “zombies” — these hallucinations take on a startling reality. This has fantastic consequences when listening to the group’s brand of hip-hop. The most profound effect is that, for FBZ, the music becomes material, an object in the air, one with nature itself, rather than some sort of manifestation of sound waves and whatnot. In such a situation, these sounds feel like living, breathing entities with liberty and will; no different than the clouds, trees, or grass. In more ways than one, rap music ultimately curtails this liberty, while improvisation and free-associative wordplay encourage it.

TMT is so fucking based

Well I think part of their ethos is that nothing ever folds perfectly into genre and that genres are designated historically, after the fact. So they go with styles because they can a. tell you what it sounds like without misleading you into thinking it's sounds like something it's not, and b. to be cheeky.

This is actually a legitimate way of describing the effects without being too psychoanalytical about it. Makes me rethink Flatbush Zombies as well.

Another good passage from the review:

> One listen to 3001: A Laced Odyssey and you can immediately sense Flatbush ZOMBiES’ psychoactive inspirations. The group’s name essentially derives from the concept of ego death, but if nothing else, the drugs provide a wonderful insight into their music. The group’s in-house producer, Erick “the Architect” Elliott, handles all of the instrumentals on the album, and he stays largely true to his namesake, building each track around their collective psychedelic odyssey from the ground up. For a contemporary hip-hop record that’s been crafted in the depressing, industrialized four walls of New York City, the tapestry of instrumentals he utilizes is largely rich, tuneful, and sensibly deployed. Tracks like “Smoke Break (Interlude)” and “Trade-Off” are whimsical and occasionally cerebral but thankfully without the sense of polished classicism that makes a lot of New York hip-hop slightly standoffish.

TMT is A-ok in my book.
