What plugins should I download after installing Ableton? for hip-hop production
>>
I'm looking for something with 72 (or more) weighted keys I could still play in 5-10 years of classical piano practice. But my main deal is techno and Kontakt has me covered for piano sounds, honestly. So I'm thinking something like
>MIDI keyboard within 600€
>Digital piano within 800€
>Hardsynth within 1500€
What do you think? Any recs? Am I under/overestimating any categories?
>>
Any thoughts on this? I like Toxic Biohazard.

Massive and Serum are nice wavetable-based synths with tons of presets for them, both worth at least a try.

whats this thread about?
i've been workin in ableton live 9 for a good while producing mostly hiphop type shit so i got a few tips

>From the last thread

Anybody familiar with the ORCH5 sample? It's the one you hear on Planet Rock. I'm trying to duplicate what they did, but it just sounds like ass when I transpose the sample to the correct pitch. This is what I have.

https://clyp.it/thgsza3j

Any ideas?
>>

We mostly just ask questions on how to attain what sound we're lookin for or what's good for this or that. Sometimes people just hype gear or plugins. It's a pretty open thread. Just don't act like your advice is a gift from god, and please for the sake of not derailing the thread don't make soundcloud format posts.

Welcome to /prod/!

I tried to make hip-hop and I struggled with sampling melodies. Specifically, sampling multiple in one track. I can find a great one and loop it and fool around on top of it, add drums, etc., but I can never find a second melody that jives with the first one.

How do I achieve the "fullness" (for lack of a better term that I know) of the guitars in pic related?
It's like they're loud on every frequency at the same time, would be great to get a synth like this
>>

same dude. i just heard a song that made wanna rethink my approach though. I figure it might be easier to make an original beat first and then find a sample to match and chop them together.

I was thinking of checking out Seamless' videos making tracks from scratch. Does anyone else do that? Like, in FL? For other genres?

idk what you mean by fullness but try widening the wavelength of the instrument to spread the sound out and if it sounds too thin, duplicate it with normal settings

Total newfag here, couple questions for /prod/;

I'm planning on building my own computer this week explicitly for recording and just wondering what sort of specs should I shoot for? I'll be recording mostly acoustic instruments using probably a 4-8 input interface.

Would sort of processor, ram, and mobo should I aim for, for a good experience while being moderately priced?
>>
>>63475276
At least 8GB of RAM (16 if it's in the budget), best proc within your budget, and a cheap graphics card so you don't eat up CPU power with graphics rendering. Also, a good power supply to tie this all together.

Optional (but totally worth it): SSD, more storage than you initially planned for, better looking case.

As for a mobo, I honestly can't speak to the benefits of using a more expensive one over a cheaper one. Just make sure it's compatible with your RAM speeds and socket type.
>>
>>63475159
Nice 1, friend.
>>
>>63475337

Thanks. I was hoping I could skimp on a graphics unit, but I guess I'll just go full gaming PC.
>>

>>
>>63475494
Why are you mastering your own tracks? 98% or more of the best producers don't master their own stuff. The very few who do always own extremely expensive monitoring equipment, specially designed studio rooms, and have extremely good ears and decades of experience.

You can pay for good mastering pretty cheaply.

Can someone explain the difference between exporting songs from a daw and mastering? Like if I get my mix sounding good and have all my eq/effects done, then export it, am I done? Is that the mastering process or do I need some other software to do it, and if so what will it add to my music or do differently from my daw?
>>
>>63477405
No that's exporting your mix, a mastered track will have been limited/compressed/given the professional sheen, basically it's the final polish and overall leveling of the track.

most DAWs have the plug-ins required. to do it properly it's best to have an actual mastering suite. I've used one a few times at uni but for the majority of my work there's no point. I just master in the DAW.
>>
>>63477460
Okay so, what if I make music with no compression used at all, and am able to set the levels of the mix for each song myself, then export the mix, am I good? If I were to master my music and compress it would lose something, or would it bring everything out? I'm sorry if these questions are stupid, I'm just a little lost on the concept of mastering, my exported tracks sound good to my ears but I feel like I'm skipping a step that most consider essential.
>>
>>63477549
well if you don't do any compression on the track/mix at all then you're looking at weak and inconsistent levels. Compression is key.

You will be good, i guess, but the mix will be lacking impact and power, compression brings weight to some tracks, mainly bass.
>>
>>63477549
Also I'm doing a bit of reading on mastering suites, and they seem to just be vst plugins, do I just put this on the master track then use it like any other plugin?
>>
>>63476781
>he must be trollan XD we r all edgy kids here!
>>
>>63477613
>>63477549
well yeah there's plug-ins that can act as mastering suites but i meant hardware based systems in a treated room at uni.

You could technically "master" a track just through putting a multiband compressor, nice clean limiter and a good EQ on your master buss. it would work but yeah, not specialised. it's what i do when i'm just doing small tracks that don't need to be super clean, otherwise i'd have to walk to the studios. can't be fucked with that some times.
>>
>>63477631

>>
>>63477683
i'm not that guy, not caring isn't even a big deal but announcing it wreaks of teenage edginess
>>
>>63477666
Thanks for your help, from what I gather I'm probably best off to keep doing what I'm doing. I might experiment with a free mastering suite for a bit to get a feel for it, but I have a enough nice plugins that should work just as well. I don't need my tracks to be very clean, in fact it might be better if they're a little rough around the edges. And as for the compression, I get by just fine without it, feedback on my work has been positive so far, and I've tried it on several sound source with no issues. Thanks again, you cleared something up that I've been confused about for quite a while.
>>
>>63477815
don't mention it, happy to help. compression will help, links to your stuff? i'd like to give it a listen if that's alright.
You don't need a dedicated mastering suite.
what DAW are you using?
>>
>>63477916
I'd like to share some of my music but I really try not to post it on 4chan, the stuff specifically without compression is my serious work and that I especially don't want to post here. I hope you understand. Honestly take my word for it, I get by without compression. It terms of my production style think of 60's albums and jazz, so a lot of compression isn't required. I'm not trying to make anything that has a radio sheen to it, I'm just going for what I like and so far other people seem to be liking it too. Also I'm using a combination of Reaper and Sony Acid for a daw, I'm doing separate things in each.
>>
>>63478042
okay fair enough, i can understand that. if you want to share it privately i'm up for that. what style?
>>
https://clyp.it/ldajyeza
>>
>>63478090
I think I'll keep my music to myself for now, it's still a work in progress and the people I've played it to are pretty select. Stylistically, it's goes between folk and electronic music, deeply rooted in psychedelia but with prog and minimalism (i know, it's like the opposite) influences in composition. It's not really 100% in any specific style, conceptually in some ways it could be comparable to Dean Blunt, but musically it's a world apart. Influences include but are not limited to, Frank Zappa, Incredible String Band, King Crimson, Madlib, Steve Reich and folk Anco. I don't know what to tell you other than that, it's different but not foreign and so far it seems to be working so I'm sticking with it for now. I wanted to have a full length release out months ago but due to several unexpected setbacks and perfectionism it's delayed, currently working on putting together a demo with old material and rough versions.

>>
>>63478529

>>
>>63478042

Just want to add as a complete aside that I think it's smart to be selective who you share your art with, especially art that is still gestating in the mind and creative process and only partially formed. A few comments from those with an untrained ear or differentiating tastes can destroy your ability to fully realize your ideas. Even if those are positive comments, it could give you confidence to put out a product worse than you would have made without that encouragement. Ideally I let no-one hear anything I've made until it is 100% drop-dead finished and I am so confident in what I have made that any insecure criticism will completely unphase me. Whereas good criticism will come as a joyful surprise to make this good thing even better. Otherwise I have all these outside suggestions in my head fucking with and clashing against my own ideas that I absolutely never would have had originally, and I end up questioning and sabotaging my own , authentic inspiration with an insecurity based in pleasing people.

Do this enough and you either get deadlocked with indecision, end up altering your vision to please unknown people, sound like everyone else, or quit out of discouragement.

This is the best answer, every daw from Acid to Protools serves a purpose and is best for somebody. There is no objective best because they basically all do the same things, give or take, what differs between them is the workflow and the quality of that is 100% subjective.

Hey prod,

How do you guys go about working on things? I find I typically have ideas for whole songs so I end up doing that a lot. I get so excited about the new idea that in a very convoluted way, all the processes of sound design, synthesis, composition, all get tangled, and the whole project becomes very messy and manic. This tends to make actually finishing shit very hard for me. I have about a dozen "finished" projects that just need that "final touch" that I can't bring myself to actually finalize because that is such a boring process compared to rushing out an inspired idea, and tends to result in a lot of sitting and thinking and re-arranging things rather than actually making music. I also find I'll get very attached to a song or idea or element of a song and be unwilling to change it, and end up just staring at the monitor with this metaphorical elephant in the room that I know doesn't fit, but is basically my child at this point.

Given my creative process of being hit with a lot of ideas almost constantly, I've been thinking of getting all of my ideas down when they happen, then going back and trying to make something cohesive from them. Otherwise I feel like most of my production time is wasted thinking about how to change an old idea into something better rather than getting new ideas down.

I don't know; the process is fairly crazy for me, and I really want to streamline it into something less messy and Dadaist and insane. What do you guys think of this as a creative strategy, and how do you guys go about this? Work on multiple ideas at once or hyper focus one idea into perfection?
>>
>>63484212
>How do you guys go about working on things?
I run with it.

Everyone has a different process basically. Just runnin with it is the easiest

>>
>>63484212
You probably just need to spend more time on it, I think we all do. Making music is a lot harder than anyone really expects, it seems. It's not hard to get something that sounds sort of decent, but then it becomes insanely hard to go from that to actually sounding good/professional.

>>
>>63487271
I think the most important thing is to have an envelope on the unison thickness. I had the envelope set so that the longer the note is engaged, the thicker the unison gets. I made it to where there was no unison at all during the attack and made the unison slowly get thicker during the release, but not TOO thick. Super long release, no sustain, sharp attack, no decay. That's all I really did. And added some reverb, of course.

Note is a B.

I dunno if your synth can do all that though.

>>
What do I need to put all my songs on a cassette tape?
>>
>>63487906
I love it!

I've used both the DS-10 Plus and the DSN-12, and from what I can tell, the DS-10 Plus is a lot better in terms of performance, whereas the DSN-12 is good for arrangement due to all the space they give you.

By that I mean you can't access the mixer while in song mode with the DSN-12, so if that's a problem, hunt down the DS-10 Plus. The sound generation is the same, you just get fewer effects and tracks.

Also, this guy kicks ass:

Alright /mu/

Pleas help me on this.

Basically I'm trying to create a vocal effect to make a voice sound electric. Think similiar to how they did Electro's voice in the last spiderman film.

Holy fucking shit though, I can't figure out HOW to do it. I've tried vocoders, effects, sidechains, the works, but NOTHING I do sounds even close to what I'm going for.

They're a bit less than 20 on amazon used, I'l definitely keep them in mind.

I was going to use the dsn 12 in a DAW by using a male to male 3.5mm and putting the end not in the 3ds in the microphone jack on my computer. Only problem is when I record there's static in the background, I don't know if it's the cord or the jack or something else.

But if it can be gotten to work well it really opens up possibilities for musicians who would like a synth but don't have a lot to spend, provided they already have a 3ds. If it can be used with a DAW or sequencer than they can get a fully featured synth for $40.

What do you guys think, could it work?
>>
>>63488783
Sure, the noise is inescapable though as a consequence of the audio hardware on the 3DS.

It sure is a lot of power: 12 individual MS-10s with effects and a mixer. The only disadvantage is the lack of MIDI.
>>
>>63488628
hmmm, by calm it down do you mean toning down some of the vocal chops and stuff?

I use a lot of those vocal cuts in actual melody with the strings and such, so I just made that little intro as kind of a lead in to the rest of the song, if that makes any sense.

I definitely see what you mean if you think its a little too hyperactive at the beginning though.

How about a yamaha s30 for 225?
I'm checking out all the synths on my local craigslist and I couldn't really find any price information on the prodigy, there were no ebay listings or anything. But from the little I did find ir doesn't seem like a good price. Couldn't find anything on the s30 either.

Alright. I posted this earlier, got some feedback, made some revisions and just now finished it.

https://clyp.it/lbgb1ocz

Thoughts?
>>
>>63489058
Bro, in all honesty. You'd be better off buying a nice midi keyboard and using the rest of the money to get some good VSTs.

There's really no reason to own a Moog anymore.
>>
>>63489189
>There's really no reason to own a Moog anymore

elaborate
>>
>>63489205
There's plenty of VSTs now that can emulate perfectly well whatever you would be able to do on the Moog. Some, arguably better.

Some prefer having the physical model, others will argue that the sound just "isn't the same", but that's purely subjective.

Basically when buying a moog you have to ask yourself, "Do I really want to spend $1k on a new synth, or would I rather spend $500 on a good midi keyboard, and then the rest of the money on any number of VSTs that I can program to do whatever."

Personally speaking, I sold all my synths, switched over to a S series and never looked back.

As for what I did with the vocals, its really nothing special man! I took a really popular pop song that's out right now and chopped about 40-50 different tiny chunks out of it and re-arranged them by playing them out on a midi keyboard into the sequencer.

All of the instrumentation that you hear in the intro(drums, vocals, melody, etc) all come from little pieces of this song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uo35R9zQsAI

Let me drop some mad Ableton knowledge on y'all:

You know the instrument rack? The thing with the macros? Well open up a fresh one and click on the button that looks like a bullet point list.

You can put in AS MANY PLUG-INS, INSTRUMENTS, DRUM RACKS, and OTHER INSTRUMENT RACKS as you want into that bad boy so you can layer like a pro.

But let's go a step further: Say you have Live Intro or Lite and are limited to only 8 tracks. You can have WAY more than 8 thanks to this bad boy. Rack up a bunch of instruments, click the "Key" button, and you can set what notes are played by what instrument. This means that you can send specific MIDI data to different plugins so you can play chords with one and a lead + bass with another. Just make sure you track both in a single MIDI track.

You can even make your lead synth play down to C-2 and use the "Pitch" MIDI effect to bring it all the way up.

The possibilities are endless.

While I agree with you, I never follow your advice lol. I show everything I make at any point in the process to anyone who cares (except my actual audience, to preserve the magic). I usually have a strong idea of what needs to be done, and I'm good at dismissing other people's ideas when they don't fit. Sometimes there are some great suggestions I get though. Most people say your track is good, even if it isn't. Either to spare you, be nice to you or they just don't notice the difference. As long as you know where you want to go, it doesn't matter what they say.

There are pros and cons to both convolution reverb and algorithmic reverb, and convolvers can be used in techniques that don't involve reverb at all.
>>
>>63494093
>>63494566

I think the best convolver plugin is a bit subjective as they are mostly dependant on what Impulse you're using, or what samples you're using if you're using a convolver for something creative.

If you're on Logic, Space Designer is pretty good. As for external plugins, you could try Audio Ease Altiverb, but IIRC it's annoying to pirate or someting.
>>
>>63494566
You mean like automation of certain parameters?
>>
>>63494631

Yes, that's an advantage of algorithmic reverb.

A disadvantage of algorithmic reverb is that it generally doesn't sound as good/natural as convolution reverb.
