What's his best lyric?
>>
born in the usa
>>
>Now I been lookin' for a job but it's hard to find
>Down here it's just winners and losers
>Don't get caught on the wrong side of that line
>Well I'm tired of comin' out on the losin' end
>So honey last night I met this guy and I'm gonna do a little favor for him
>>
Then I got Mary pregnant
and man that was all she wrote
And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat
We went down to the courthouse
and the judge put it all to rest
No wedding day smiles no walk down the aisle
No flowers no wedding dress
>>
There were ghosts in the eyes
Of all the boys you sent away
They haunt this dusty beach road
In the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets
>>
>Independence Day
Cause the darkness of this house has got the best of us
There's a darkness in this town that's got us too
But they can't touch me now, and you can't touch me now
They ain’t gonna do to me, what I watched them do to you

>Adam raised a Cain
In the summer that I was baptized,
My father held me to his side,
As they put me to the water,
He said how on that day I cried.
We were prisoners of love, a love in chains,
He was standin' in the door, I was standin' in the rain,
with the same hot blood burning in our veins,
Adam raised a Cain.

>>
I followed that dream
Just like those guys do way up on the screen
Drove my Challenger down Route 9
Through the dead ends and all the bad scenes
The promise was broken
Cashed in a few of my dreams

Well I built that Challenger by myself
But I needed money and so I sold it
Lived a secret I should've kept to myself
But I got drunk one night and I told it

All my life, I fought that fight
The fight that you can't win
Every day it just gets harder to live
The dream you're believing in

the delivery of these lines is so good, it sounds like he's genuinely in emotional pain when singing them.

it ain't no sin to be glad you're alive
>>
OH YEAH LIFE GOES ON
LONG AFTER THE THRILL OF LIVING IS GONE
>>
Last night I dreamed that I was a child out where the pines grow wild and tall
I was trying to make it home through the forest before the darkness falls

I heard the wind rustling through the trees and ghostly voices rose from the fields
I ran with my heart pounding down that broken path
With the devil snappin at my heels

I broke through the trees and there in he night
My fathers house stood shining hard and bright the branches and brambles tore my clothes and scratched my arms
But I ran till I fell shaking in his arms

damn

Saw this live last Thursday. He talked a bit about what he was thinking writing Independence Day before he played it.

He said something like, "It was about the feeling of the world closing in on you when you're a young man, realizing the compromises that come with growing up, but not yet understanding the the small miracles that come with compromise and, in turn, shape the fabric of our lives." Fuck.

I saw him on Feb 29th, It was the 7th time I've seen him and it was probably the best concert I've ever been to or will ever go to. He's an amazing live perfomrer

Totally underrated as an artist and poet, though, but only because he never ran in artsy circles, focused on blue-collar life, and injected a fair amount of humor and fun into otherwise weighty themes (Cadillac Ranch being a good example). I can't think of any contemporary band that comes anywhere close to his range of songwriting, from weighty to playful.

In all honesty, this is what has kept his music from aging better than what even the best contemporary, emotionally weighty indie stuff can hope to achieve.

ahahahaahaaahaaa. So epic
>>
>>63470463
Shit. Fucking sleep deprived. Meant to say that his music will age better than any contemporary, emotionally weighty indie stuff for those stated reasons. Namely, because he never exclusively wrote depressing music and because he always made it situational and narrative, rather than about himself, when he did.

I learned how to write heavy lyrics and not come off as a self-involved, emo prick from listening to his first few albums.

Born To Run
If you want the laid back/singer-songwriter Bruce: Nebraska
If you want the quintessential American/Arena rock Bruce: Born in the USA
>>
>>63470788
springsteen curiously doesn't have any great compilation albums for newcomers, like most other rock acts do. i'd personally recommend the river, but born to run, darkness, bitUSA or especially live 75/85 (if you can handle it) are good starting points as well
>>
>>63470788
1. The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle
2. Born to Run
3. Darkness on the Edge of Town

That is, if you actually want to see the evolution of his sound and not just stick with the beer commercial hits.

>>63470918
not much of an evolution, though, is it? i mean he did the street poet thing for like three years and then it's been beer commercial rock ever since, with an acoustic album every ten years. his post-btr 'sound' is, thanks to van zandt, more of a regression back to oldies radio/am pop/garage rock; far less sophisticated than his early records (which are of lesser quality overall, just a bit more ambitious)
>>
>>63470918

>see the evolution of his sound
You're stopping a few decades early, and your 1 and 2 are really overrated albums. I recommend:

1) Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ
2) Darkness on the Edge of Town
3) Nebraska
4) Tunnel of Love
5) The Rising
>>
>>63471078
>which are of lesser quality overall

No.
