If we're considering guys like King Crimson, Television, Sufjan Stevens, Yo La Tengo, and Van Morrison mainstream then Mac Demarco is certainly mainstream.

what
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
>Bruce Springsteen is the epitome of "epic". After Bob Dylan and before the Ramones, he was one of the few musicians capable of transforming the mood of an entire generation into a "sound". If the rules to judge the significance of an artist are that a) he be indifferent to fads and trends; b) that his lyrics dig deep into his era and resonate with the souls of millions of people; c) that each record be, de facto, a concept album; d) that each song send shivers down the spine even without a catchy melody; then Springsteen is one of the greatest of all times.

I guess we need to define what we mean by mainstream, then. I agree with >>63464590. I know he's fairly popular, but I would say that he's popular with people who are at least into music a fair bit. Same with a band like AnCo.
They're well known in "indie" circles, sure. But they're not on the level of recognition from The Beatles, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Metallica, Queen, etc. That's just the kind of thing that pops into my mind when I think of "mainstream" artists.

I'm surprised Kraftwerk hasn't been mentioned yet.

Daft Punk
Bjork
Nirvana
Aphex Twin
Miles Davis

Velvet Underground is mainstream? I don't think so, they're barely even well-known considering they've been around for nearly 50 years.

>a bit of a stretch to say patrician
His only failure was Morning Phase which was Sea Changes rehashed. Outside of that he's patrician af
