spotlight kid is worth a listen (and maybe better than trout mask) but it really doesn't come close to the magic that is........Clear Spot

OP here, sorry, meant to post this
>>
>>63463364

bruh! bob krasnow, sleaze lizard #1, remixed this album without Don's permission and added as much phaser as possible in order to appeal to the acid crowd.....it's a good listen BUT it's sacrilege....Mirror Man has much better versions of most of the tracks on Strictly Personal
>>
>>63462550
his 3rd worse album behind the mercury ones
>>63463403
2nd best
>>63463432
original recording was better
>>
No its DatRS
>>
>>63463403
>>63463432

Clear Spot head here, bat chain and lick me decals are great too.....dude didn't really make a lot of bad music! ice cream for crow is pretty serviceable...unconditionally guaranteed and bluejeans are bottom of the barrel but again...listenable
>>
>>63463450

grow fins and alice in blunderland are great tho

anybody read this?
http://desertisland.bigcartel.com/product/a-carrot-is-as-close-as-a-rabbit-gets-to-a-diamond-captain-beefheart-interviews-and-texts

I picked it up over the summer, pretty essential reading for any Beefheart fan and at $10 it's such a steal
>>
>>63463555
checked

>>63463571

not sure what U mean b
>>
So beefheart is some kind of multilayered deep level ironic shit, right?
>>
>>63463616

nah
>>
>>63463555

no yeah but next to his others it doesn't hold up as well, especially stuff like blabber and smoke and how the title track is just a slow version of pachuco cadaver
>>
>>63463616
No
>>
>>63462550
It's pretty good but feels too tame for a Beefheart record.

>>63463332
I think this one's a bit unbalanced. Has some cheesy tracks.
Still, Big Eyed Beans from Venus is amazing and, in my opinion, one of their best.

>>63463403
Good contender.

>>63463364
like >>63463448 said, the production is pretty bad. A shame.

>>63463432
Another contender; I love this album. The harmonica(?) on the title track is so good. And Don's vocals feel like a roller coaster throughout the album.
Also, Tropical Hot Dog Night, there's something about that song, is so damn enjoyable.

I haven't listened to the "original" one. What do you guys think of it? Is it really better than Shiny Beast?
>>
>>63463448
>>63463664

I don't think the production is bad at all. It's like the 60s loveless, with all the liquid audio and studio trickery

It's one of my favorite albums, sonically
>>
>>63462550
i do
click clack is fucking goat
the original math rock song
>>
>>63463664

what tracks off Clear Spot are cheesy? Too Much Time and Lo Yo Yo Stuff are some of the best tracks he ever "wrote"

tropical hot dog night is such a winner! the best version is live tho:

>original recording was better

This, Bat Chain Puller, his unreleased album is probably his best, but I'm a big fan of Ice Cream For Crow and Doc At the Radar Station.

Once you listen to all his albums though, you realize trout mask replica is the purest example of what he was trying to do, and easily his most consistant albums. Most of his other albums have better songs, but they almost all also have quite a few songs I don't really care for. Some of the tracks on Clear Spot and Shiny Beast are among the best he's ever done, but those albums are also full of lots of tracks that I can't stand.

How has nobody mentioned this yet? Probably his best "accessible" album.
>>
>>63463828

don't get me wrong, this and clear spot are my favs but this is less of a "Beefheart" album than Clear Spot

Man I really need to listen to I'm Gonna Do What I Wanna Do.
I've already downloaded it so I might give it a listen tonight. Track list seems really really promising.
>>
What's the consensus in his mid '70s albums (Spotlight Kid through Unconditionally Guaranteed). I heard they were not that good but are they worth a listen?
>>
>>63464002
Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot are great. Bit different but not too much.

Unconditionally Guaranteed and Bluejeans & Moonbeams are pretty fucking bad.
And I don't mean bad compared to his other work, just plain bad.
>>
>>63463828
I love seeing videos of his band, their playing always looks weird and rigid, even when they're playing a relatively normal song
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UOweeSdI2k
Also, this one of them on German TV is really great, their avant garde bits kinda suck, but that version of Click Clack in the middle is great, just seeing the band perform really helps you see how hard these songs would be to perform

>>
>>63464057
>>63464002
This guy's right anon, Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot are great. A little bit more polished, but sort of a good compromise between his weirder stuff and Safe as Milk, with better production than any of his earlier albums
>>
>>63464110
>their avant garde bits kinda suck
aw c'mon, that's one of the best versions of Steal Softly Thru Snow imo.

Also, Art Tripp is fucking goat.

Daily reminder: Beefheart/Bob Krasnow invented shoegaze music on Strictly Personal.

Decals is overrated, Ice Cream For Crow is underrated

>>63464545
you're*
i can agree, bluejeans is worse. his input dipped so harshly until ice cream for crow imo.

>>63464603
it's pretty bad, and not regarded well critically. i think it's awful, maybe you don't. it's whatever. i'd listen to Decals any day instead.
>>
>>63464612
put BCP above mirror man & we essentially agree completely. you know your beef.
>>
>>63464714
Nah, Decals is undoubtedly on par with TMR. It's more fine-tuned and mature, but just not as "whoa" as TMR.

Ice Cream for Crow i flux on how good it is, so who knows

>>63464786
he is one of my top artists. I own a bootleg or two in addition to numerous first issues. Almost got a near mint copy of Safe as Milk (with the original baby sticker included) recently but it unfortunately wasn't meant to be

i have an SEALED safe as milk from the first post-buddha pressing. it was my grandpa's. really treasure that thing. have a new 180g reissue to listen to.
all your 'preference' differences are a bit tweaked from mine, but in terms of songwriting/beef quality you're dead on. i feel like too many people here just think he's a meme.
>>
>>63464429
that was really cool
why don't people credit beefy for inventing dream pop instead of the velvet underground when he did it first
