How come rock music never took off in the rest of continental Europe like it did in Germany? Italy has a few good bands, but germany's got Faust, Can, Kraftwerk, Neu, Popol Vuh, Nico. I can't even think of a good artist that's not from italy or germany. France has a fairly strong classical music and literary tradition, obviously not as central Europe, but it didn't seem to carry over to rock music at all.
