If you thought this album was random, amusing, for funny in any way, you completely missed the point.

lyrics and singin could definetely be called "random" at times without being wrong.

I liked it a lot and found it very funny at times, what's the point that I missed?

It is funny though. That's part of what makes it so great. Very few albums can get as many absurd belly laughs as this.

What? In a political sense?
>>
>>63373003
conservative values should be nowhere near music
music isn't about conformity
>>
>>63373140
You're stretching this. Music is organized noise. It has to conform in some sense. You can't make a song that is all C,G# and E in different keys with no rhythmic structure because it would sound like incoherent noise.

Music by nature is structured or else it is literally just noise that doesn't sound good. Do you play an instrument?
>>
>>63373179
what are you doing
there's plenty of order on TMR, the patterns are a little bit unusual is all
>>
>>63373140
I'm really baffled by the comments on this board, it's abundantly clear that many of you know close to nothing about how music works, how to make it or what music even is. How is it that other boards actually have informed people on the topic and 90% of this board is teenagers shitposting.
>>
>>63373271
ok so explain how TMR is not musical
>>
>>63373260
>>63373288

There is not plenty of order, there is so little order that it is closer to noise than actual music. Keys are barely adhered to, the intruments have a serious lack of synchronization and it's not like jazz where it's chaos linked together by keys and rhythm it really is bordering on just noise.

but it was all carefully composed by john french

>Van Vliet used a piano—an instrument he had never played before—as his main compositional tool. Since he had no experience with the piano and no conventional musical knowledge at all, he was able to experiment with few preconceived ideas of musical form or structure. Beefheart sat at the piano until he found a rhythmic or melodic pattern that he liked. Mike Barnes compared this approach to John Cage's "maverick irreverence toward classical tradition".[10] John French then transcribed this pattern, typically only a measure or two long, into musical notation. After Beefheart was finished French would then piece these fragments together into compositions, reminiscent of the splicing together of disparate source material on Marker's tape. French decided which part would be played on which instrument and taught each player their part, although Van Vliet had final say over the ultimate shape of the product. Band member Bill Harkleroad has remarked on "how haphazardly the individual parts were done, worked on very surgically, stuck together, and then sculpted afterwards." Once completed each song was played in exactly the same way every time,

Wow were they trying to make a shitty album? Of course it came out sounding like shit.

This could fucking pass in a TMR track.

> trying to make a shitty album
unless you hold a conservative position

you're just confirming my point here
>>
>>63373404
Seems like a fun idea, putting pieces of randomly played music together to actually make a composition. Sounds cool. Why are people so angry about it? Or is it just because of how highly people praise it?
>>
>>63373404
>This could fucking pass in a TMR track.
(not true, by the way)

>>63373446
>Van Vliet used a piano—an instrument he had never played before—as his main compositional tool. Since he had no experience with the piano and no conventional musical knowledge at all, he was able to experiment with few preconceived ideas of musical form or structure

>>63373457
It's not making me angry, it's just that it's chaos and making more noise than actual music.
>>
>>63373481
The guitar on all those songs is no more organized than that.
>>
>>63373485
>you must undergo years of training before you use an instrument so that you use it in exactly the right way
no, stop trying to stop people innovating
>>
>>63373512
>you must undergo years of training before you use an instrument so that you use it in exactly the right way

Yeah that's how instruments work.
>>
>>63373404
>This could fucking pass in a TMR track.
Only if you arrange a second guitar playing a set of notes just as up-front but without drowning out the other.
>>
>>63373512
You know that there really are basic rules to music right? I can ignore them to sound bad on purpose and make noise that people won't enjoy, or I can organize to make it sound good.
>>
>>63373524
sure of course
and we can't have distorted guitars either i suppose

all musical innovation starts out as rule-breaking
>>
>>63373539
Yeah layering two shitty and synchronized guitar tracks with equal mixing isn't a difficult feat.
>>
>>63373544
false dichotomy
you can be organising it to sound good without paying any attention to rules

>>63373561
that's true but making it sound as good as TMR is not easy
>>
>>63373553
Do you know how to make music? You just put forth a ridiculous false equivalency. Cranking up your amp is different from not fucking knowing how to to make music and just wanking around.
>>
>>63373380

>>
>>63373580
it's [not using the device in the way it was intended to be used]
exactly the same thing
>>
>>63373579
No you can't. If you blatantly ignore all rules to music you will be making noise that no one enjoys.

This sounds like shit and even still I was subconsciously following some rhythm.

>TMR has lots of random sounding guitar lines and everybody loves that, why don't they like my random guitar fiddling? :(
>>
>>63373681
That was the intention, I was showing him that you can't ignore music's basic rules and make something sound good.

>>63373684
No I mean you're following what other people told you to like.

>>63373688
That wasn't the point, I made another actual TMR like guitar part earlier in the thread though.

>>63372228
Why the fuck are you bringing politics here you dumbfuck.

Focus on defeating Hillary you dumb Bernie lover.

>>63373725
wow you really can't accept how many people bought and love this album can you
>>
u should have posted mr bungle and than u would b right op
>>
>>63373778
No I'm just saying that most of you are full of shit and can't explain why this album is good in musical terms without copying the words of others. Most of the praise of this album is due to the fact that it influenced people to care less about the rules, not that the album itself is good.
>>
>>63374005
i like listening to it

if you think that doesn't "justify" me liking it i can't help you, you seem to be so brainwashed you are probably beyond saving
>>
>>63374037
How did you get to like this album? How many times did you listen to it before you liked it?
>>
>>63374005
That sounds a lot like not being able to accept the concept that it's possible to genuinely like it.
>>
>>63374049
i came at his discog a weird way, i heard mirror man sessions first, then safe as milk, and then i didn't check anything else for about 2 years, but got really into the style of drumming on mirror man sessions and eventually i branched out and got TMR
so i knew what parameters they were working with, the way the rhythm and harmony work in mirror man isn't hugely different from TMR, but TMR is further gone
it probably took me a couple of plays to start making sense of it, but it never sounded random or chaotic to me, it reminded me of plunderphonic music, where different meters coalesce to make something more interesting
