I don't dislike Fantano, it's just sad that he was made famous. His opinions are no more informed than the average /mu/ poster which means he has no insight into music beyond being a fan of pop artists from an appropriate assortment of genres and being a proficient bass player.

my thing is even, and i hate to say i agree with craig jenkins or whatever that guy is of all people, 'cause the dude is a hack, but like even a basic basic grasp of the context of the piece of music you're reviewing would be nice. i think fantano fell for the eclecticism meme so hard that he forgot being eclectic isn't just being a dilettante, sticking a finger in every pie out there for two seconds and comparing it to your favorite music (indie rock). it's about engaging music on its terms. he constantly comes up short in this department. he thinks Kamasi Washington is revolutionary, he thinks James Ferraro's last album was just lolsorandom and didn't even mention the obvious connections to Robert Ashley, he thinks Rodeo of all things was the first LP-length quality trap record. i don't care if he's prominent or even if he reviews these records, but i just wish he would be open and honest about where his position is coming from instead of acting authoritative about genres and scenes he's invested no time in coming to understand.
plus his reviews literally never elaborate on the music at all, and his podcasts (mainly the TMT writers and the Craig Jenkins one) are just exercises in him interrupting guests who know much more than him so that he can shout asinine opinions.

I'm surprised at how put-off he is by the dissonance. He really exaggerates its dissonance and inaccessibility through the whole video, ignoring that the album is packed with one unique groove after another. It's obviously a cacophonous album but there are tons of jam moments and big instrumental climaxes. And the way he said it's completely meaningless, implying it has no depth or message was crazy to me. It's pretty surrealist and dadaist at times but those philosophies aren't exactly meaningless. I think we need to look at Fagtano a little differently than what seems to be the norm. I personally enjoy his videos because he gives some idea of what the listener is in for. Generally he avoids making claims to academia and suggesting whether or not music is good based on academic criteria, such as complexity among other things. He is simply stating what he thinks of the music. In tbe descriptions he says, "You know this is just my opinion, right?" He's giving suggestions on new music he finds and old music that people constantly bring up so those less capable of finding stuff don't miss out. I watch his videos just to get an idea of what's out there and to find artists to help me find other stuff further down vsrious rabbit holes. He's presenting music to the uninitiated with a little preview of what the potential listener is in for and his personal opinion on the piece.
Sorry for the rant, I just think that people take Dank-thony Meme-tano as something more than he is by making him out to be a competitor with Scarruffi when they have little to do with each other. He's a suggestion service while Scarruffi is an academic reviewer.
