It all depends on how it's handled. Old school heavy metal is still pretty poppy and catchy yet there was still that aggressive feel to it alongside top-tier riffing that made bands like Saxon and Savatage so great. As for the extreme variants of metal (black and death), poppiness never mixes well with them. Those genres wée not meqnt to sound poppy and all attempts to force that kind of sound only ruins what those genres are good at, it can still be "catchy" depending on how you define catchiness (if catchiness merely means that the riffs are memorable than both genres, especially death metal, have their share of catchiness).

I've never lived anywhere with much of a metal 'scene' so I can only really comment on the few oddballs like me I meet occasionally in everyday life and the masses I meet at shows. It could be that I'm just making excuses for being an old metal sperg living in the middle of nowhere but the oddballs always seem like much better people than those who can live it 24/7. They don't have any peer group to impress so you know they're in it for love of the music rather than having somewhere to fit in, but they still have to get on in normal life so they're not all 'METAL BRUH 4 LIFE CHECK OUT MUH PATCHES'. Every time I've started befriending a group of metal folks who grew up in a big city I've found them kind of self-obsessed and annoying, like they want some kind of trophy for it.

And even then you can mix metal with other influences while still retaining its integrity. At The Gates' debut album had subtle classical influences that really let TRitSiO stand out. Atheist (on their first two albums especially) had a good grasp on writing death metal riffs in a jazzy style. Demilich and Immolation were fully capable of writing dissonant passages that intertwined perfectly within their demented riffing patterns, these were all bands that added in outside influences to their respective genre while respecting the tenets of said genre. Scar Symmetry's hollow attempts at slapping down the bare minimum to qualify as death metal so they can cash in on the genre with their hyper poppy choruses is an insult to the very genre they play.

Every culture, or subculture in our case, in bigger cities, has a drive for followers and groupies. That's because in such communities people follow stuff they wouldn't necessarily embrace. Many people do it to impress the others around or to make a point.
In smaller cities, If the people who listen to metal for example are few in numbers, there's no need to impress each other. That's why people in smaller communities are more genuine. They actually are more fun to talk to about metal, they don't live in their image-selling projection of them and actually have nothing to prove to you.
Coming myself from a very small city where I was actually one of the 2 guys who would listen to metal (although I would only listen to black or prog metal), I can confirm what you say.
I fucking love those people who have a genuine passion for it. They're more laid back and they don't shop Hot Topic shit or dress all black because they MUST.
