No.

also despite what Rolling Stone would tell you, The Clash is boring dadrock pap and isn't even a punk band, Sex Pistols are trash, and The Ramones milquetoast mid-temop powerpop with a catatonic frontman.

lol why do punks have such shit taste in punk music? is it their childish faux-rebellion that causes them to lash out against the good, but popular bands in the genre? maybe narrow-minded insistence on following the punk formula plays a role in the bashing of more ambitious groups like the clash and rollins era black flag. either way, most punks are fags.

nobody on this board actually knows anything about punk or has ever been involved in it to any extent (idk if I've ever typed any sentence as much as that one good god), and their knowledge of it begins and ends with wikipedia and lists from establishment/safe rock journalists. As such, these incredibly common (hell some of em are practically universally agreed upon) opinions are seen as "blasphemy" to the classics-worshipping apes on /mu/.
>>
>>63362871
Plenty of popular bands are great, but the ones the idiot 14 year olds just getting into the genre latch onto are mostly awful. Plenty of shit that goes against the grain of punk and gets praise, but the Clash fucking weren't a punk band, and Rollins Black Flag was just masturbatory cringeworthy garbage with horrible vocals and songwriting

In other words, the people that have nothing to do with the music and could be seen as the very antithesis of its ethos. Not to mention punk became DEEPLY rooted in DIY ethos and culture almost immediately following those tepid first few years while music journos comtinued to cling to those manufactured bands that were never good to begin with. The Ramones are the only ones whi weren't trendy fakes, and even then their music is boring crap. Nothing I'm saying is uncommon at all, you just know jack fucking shit about punk.

hmm i know who i'm siding with
>>
>>63364618
1) genres are not rigidly defined, strict rules
2) The only Clash album that can be considered punk in any sense is their first, and even then it's mediocre at best. The Sex Pistols straight up were not a punk band, plain and simple. They were a completely standard manufactured rock outfit with an edgy image.
>>
>>63364629
>words mean things and you seem to have this highly-autistic impression that they can only mean the very first thing they were defined as

I never indicated that, dumbass. You're the one making yourself the arbiter of the meaning of the word, whereas I'm deferring to actual historical facts.

What you're arguing is like me saying, "Wagner didn't make romantic music! 'Romantic' means 'having to do with love and courtship!'"

>The Clash aren't a punk band in my arbitrary definition of the word! The word has evolved and means whatever nebulous bullshit I want it to!

At least that would have been honest.

so

>the people who actually make and support punk music (very rarely kids below college age at youngest btw, usually older) vs people who don't support (and never have/will) punk music in any meaningful way and only know what they've read, keeping an arm's length at all times

For comparison, imagine two people discussing a movie. One has not only seen the film multiple times and studied it, as well as other works from the people involved, but even has film making experience to back up their opinions and help further appreciate it; the other read a brief synopsis of the movie before going to see it once, then spent half of it on their phone and barely paid attention beyond the absolute basic surface details of the plot. The latter is arguing that they are more knowledgable about the movie because they believe they've gotten everything they possibly can out of it, even though the former knows this to be factually, empirically false, and any attempts to refute the claims of the retard are met with "no there's nothing more to it than what i know". You are the retard arguing about something you don't actually know anything about.
>>
>>63364737
>>63364737
what a moronic analogy. a more apt one would be someone who has seen hundreds of horror films but little else vs someone with a solid grounding in horror with an extensive knowledge of cinematic history and theory whose taste spans styles and movements arguing about the the genre. while the former has more thoroughly immersed themselves in horror, they are constrained by their lack of knowledge elsewhere. the latter has a larger and more informed frame of reference, and thus a more intelligent opinion.

As a fan is music in general I've never cared for it.
Shows how many people forget about what it's initially about, the music itself...

Punk and metal shows can both be a lot of fun though, luckily I have never met one of these spergs irl, I would get pissed off pretty quickly.
>>
>>63368462
What's the best punk album then
>>
>>63368469
I've seen punkfags completely shit on stuff like grindcore, thrashcore, stenchcore, sludgecore and crust which are all punk subgenres just because a lot of those bands associate themselves with the metal scene, but then I see metalfags embrace those 5 subgenres.
>>
>>63368554

Holy fuck who cares what people like, at least they appreciate the music.
You're the kind of immature person who constantly moans about what people listen to.

Stop worrying so much about other people on an anonymous music board.
We get that you're insecure and value cred above music but we are simply here to discuss music so fuck off.
>>
>>63368562
It is, but "TROO" punk elitists will completely shit on crust because crust was born from combining hardcore and gritty speed metal like venom
>>
>>63368567
I have to wonder if someone who actually likes Iceage, yet shits on other people's tastes in punk is something exclusive to this board or not. The cognitive dissonance is real.

>>63368469
again, there's no "punk vs metal" itt or in real life, and you are further showing how little you know about either genre since punk/hc bands are frequently booked with all sorts of metal bands and there is considerable overlap in fanbases and musical styles.

dropdead is influential but terrible
>>
>>63368630
There definitely was a rivalry between punk and metal in the 80s, and today there's still a rivalry between hardcore elitists in both genres.

In the 80s punks used to say metal was unoriginal in the sense that a lot of early black and death metal was just crust and stenchcore with different names. Which was the truth since punk was largely original throughout the 80s whereas the extreme metal subgenres just scavenged what punk was already doing years before.

Now it's just bickering between elitists who cry "This is not really punk, it's metal!" or "This is not really metal, it's punk!"
>>
>>63368676
>that a lot of early black and death metal was just crust and stenchcore with different names.

Early black metal was literally just lo-fi thrash what the fuck are you talking about
>>
>>63368711
thrash metal comes from thrashcore, too.

You can't tell me that bands like Hellhammer weren't very crusty, Satanic Rites is more of a crust album than it is thrash/first-wave.

Iceage literally only "blew up" because the guy who booked 285 kent saw them in denmark and brought them to NYC a few months later. They are on a major indie label and as such I'm sure there is some pr when they put out a record but hardly enough to qualify as "string pulling" or "manufacturing".

And again, show me one band outside of their old scene that sounds like those first two records, and give me one good reason (ie not "singer look pretty they dumb boy band") a band writing music that interesting and unique is bad.

btw the whole "you aren't a REAL PUNK if youbwant to keep food on the table!!!" shit is antiquated as fuck and a belief only held by retarded edgy teenagers. Everyone has and uses some form of connections to do anything in music, even the most diehard of DIY bands are only able to tour and survive because of connections.

so you do live in one of those places i mentioned, huh?

sorry dude, but the overeducated rich children of 80s yuppies are the last people whose taste in punk i'm gonna look to as a relevant designation of what is and isn't credible

and there really isn't that much to talk about when it comes to iceage's music

the first album was borderline incompetent pastiche of late 70s/early 80s UK shit with no tunes and no character
the second one was a bit more interesting but way too heavy on the worship of early SST/touch & go/dischord fare
the 3rd one undoes all the possible interest there may be in them finally learning to play their instruments by sounding like the world's shittiest bad seeds tribute band

it's a bad band
most bands with which the people talking about them online can't keep themselves from somehow bringing up their appearance(just look at /mu/ and the way iceage barely ever get talked about without some fag or another posting dreamy photos of elias along the way) tend to be bad

The casualties? Fucking poser
>>
>>63369144
The rivalry actually started because those two scenes were very incestuous.

A lot of surface crust, grind, and thrashcore bands mingled with the budding extreme metal scene, whereas the deep underground hardcore scene mostly listened to by elitists started to resent extreme metal because a lot of the budding first-wave black and early death metal bands were copying what their punk/hardcore predecessors were already doing and popularizing (relatively) a style that's deeply rooted in the underground. Whereas the surface extreme hardcore bands mingled with metal, the underground extreme hardcore bands despised it. You do see plenty of punk and metal elitists fling shit at eachother, the only difference is that punk elitists will sometimes completely say that these hardcore/metal hybrid genres aren't hardcore at all.

You could unironically make a valid case for Satanic Rites being a punk album and not a metal album.

there's a difference between having the sorts of connections which allow you to play in a town without having to worry about whether you're gonna have something to eat and a place to sleep after the show and the sorts of connections which end up with you rubbing elbows(or snorting coke) with people working in highly influential music publications and doing fashion photoshoots
