i personally hate high focus, lyrics about being a twat, eating pork pies and smoking bongs doesnt really cut it for me. also they all seem so angry. also leaf dog has possibly the most annoying voice in music.

i do get that people rate them, but i just dont get it.

I fucking hate UK hip-hop. The British accent is perfect for grime and doesn't work at all over hip-hop.

Wish people realised this. Wish actual good UK rappers would spit over grime beats. And I wish they used ACTUAL grime beats rather than the shitty trappy shit that's being passed as grime today.
>>
>>63347084
> still sleeping on scroobius pip
>>
>>63350255

I agree mostly but there have been some great UK hip-hop, Roots Manuva and London Possee etc.

The difference is they took hip-hop inspiration and did something original not copied American shit. When I see British rappers copying Chicago drill and talking about "opps" and "drilling" and calling themselves "150 rockblock" I cringe.

You could argue that it's a subgenre of hip-hop (although there are many who will completely disagree with you), but overall it's a pretty different sound. A lot of modern grime beats are very hip-hop/trappy though with their loud bass and shit.

These are grime instrumentals.

Can you Britbongs explain the appeal of Nines to me?

He's got a lot of buzz in the UK, especially in London and shit, at the moment and I don't understand why. He's genuinely one of the most amateur sounding big name rappers around.

Apparently he's a really good lyricist or something, but I can't actually focus on his lyrics because he's such an awful rapper. I'm not even joking, he's that bad. Listen to this shit. This is very very popular in the UK.

>>
>>63350468

it's not a subgenre of hip-hop at all, it evolved out of garage completely independent from hip-hop.

>>63350535

In London hip-hop being "real" is more important than being talented. In other words, having a reputation as a real gangster will help your career more than having rap ability. Nines is a real gang member, with a reputation built on shit from the streets. Once you have that entreé into the rap-scene you can build from there, but it's built on street cred. For an extreme example see 67, their music is awful but they are known for being real scary guys so they have lots of fans. There's plenty of unknown white guys who are very talented rappers but have no image.

Nines is in the news recently for being involved in some gang war shit when he robbed jewellery from another rapper called C-Biz, who had one of Nines' goons shot so that might be why you heard of him recently.
>>
>>63350184

He's got a good flow but no good content.
It's the same shit "I smoke weed, I'm a great rapper, I fuck girls" etc that you've heard a million times before.

I just don't get it. He's genuinely awful. I don't think I've ever managed to get through an entire Nines song. How people can bump his mixtapes regularly is completely crazy to me.

>>63351225
It really isn't though, it's clearly a UKG sub-genre.
>>
>>63351045

Not really but they are grime and not hip-hop, the grime scene has less emphasis on being "real" than the London hip-hop scene.

Skepta and JME were really from the roads, Skepta was a drug dealer/gang member (Merdian & P Town), JME was a nerd but he never claimed to be anything else and really did come from a shit estate, see Meridan Crew for their first grime crew that was much more gangster. Jammer, Frisco and Shorty were never gangsters but they don't really claim to be (Jammer is a goat face prick, total joker). Solo 45 was really a roadman who did armed robberies, just got out of jail for 10 years for attempted murder cos he tried to kill some girl who he got pregnant and didn't want to have an abortion. Maximum is a good DJ but not hard. Drake is a joker, he jumped on the BBK bandwagon to feel hard even though they were never that hard.

If you want grime crews that were real gangs, see Roadside Gs, NODB, Cold Blooded & Merdian Crew.
>>

Garage is a very versatile genre, Burial is just one take on it (and is a take on it which was done better a couple of years before him anyway).

R.A got life under trident's expanded powers where they can give life sentences for non-murder crimes, he won't be home for a while.

He was accused of firing a mac at some rival gang members who were parked outside his house, there was no physical evidence though it was just based on witness testimony so it's kind of a dodgy case, met placed an injunction so it can't even be reported on :/

He was never caught for the shooting RSGs really did do though so maybe it balances out.

Still releases some songs from behind bars that are good though, best MC of all time imo.

Oh and look for the NODB set with DJ Big Mikee on Grime Time Pt. 3 for NODB's best set.

Shame his prison stuff is more Hip-Hop.

Tbh most of RSGs are underrated, Diggerz, Elmz, Phantom, Smiley and Alan B are all actually pretty good.

UK blacks don't have the insane slavery-born victim complex carried by US blacks. They still carry the racism chip on their shoulder, but it's more a matter of class than the culture of "we were possessions, now we possess" in american black music.

That song is too sick, I think Titch has got better in prison. Even with the shooting people aside though he really was crazy though, he used to bully young kids at grime events I don't know anyone who met him with something good to say about him. Great MC though.

Why can't you make a good grime album?

Why doesn't an actual good rapper sit down with some actual good producers and make an actual good album with some actual good concepts and lyrics and flows and shit?

And also, why do most of the grime rappers not use the beats made by the actual good grime producers? Why do they just ignore guys like Boofy and Kahn and Neek and Murlo and just stick with their glorified trap beats?

Never mind then, I never thought they were Cemetary Warriors but it is an okay mixtape.

>>63352265
There is the significantly high risk that he'll end up becoming shit for no reason at all since that seems to happen to every up and coming young Grime MC. The Square guys are still mostly okay as well.

>>63352314
Probably because it never originated as an album genre (but then did Hip-Hop either, I wouldn't be able to say either way for sure). The first few Grime LPs were basically the MC spitting over his own productions (or someone in his crew's productions) and it worked out okay but they were basically just freestyles. Other than Dizzee and Kano's debuts no one seemed to be interested in actually making an album with a concept throughout the whole thing.

>And also, why do most of the grime rappers not use the beats made by the actual good grime producers?
There's no good reason for this.
>>
>>63352314

The culture is not focused around albums.

Grime MCs don't grow up listening to Grime in album form so they don't learn what a good album sounds like, they grow up listening to live PAs and sets and that's what they learn to do. The talent expected of a grime MC is to be able to sound good on any beat the DJ throws at you live, not meticulously plan out an album song by song.

Trying to fit grime into albums is like putting a square peg in a round hole anyway.
>>
>>63352623
>>63352691
But hip-hop started in the same way, it's called evolution.

It's been over 10 years.
>>
>>63352798

Albums are just a way for record labels to package and sell songs, grime started as a genre distributed for free on pirate radio stations so it's never fit into album format.

I don't see why this is a bad thing, just download your favourite artist's classic sets instead of your favourite artist's classic albums.

Is there really any incentive for them to learn better song writing though? A Grime MC can become famous for the dumbest shit like saying BANG or random chinese sounding things (or at least, this used to be the case) so why bother.

Now people consume music through the internet unique local scenes are dying out and everything is becoming more homogenised.
