the cult shit, mostly because it always seems t tie back to reality, in a way that analyzes the nature of belief and whatnot
>ambient driven BoC or beat driven BoC
ideally, its the combination of both that makes their albums work so well
>new album when?
now
>talk about other stuff, I dunno
do you think the two recent remixes are there to precede new music sometime soon, or did they just coincidentally get released around the same time?
>>63317930
>the cult shit, mostly because it always seems t tie back to reality, in a way that analyzes the nature of belief and whatnot
in some ways imo it shows a self awareness about their music and how they make their audience/fans feel. it's like, anything can be taken to far - even things that seem inherently "good." i think they are so fascinated with cults because these are often groups that worship think that are viewed as positive (nature, peace etc) yet they indulge so much in these fantasies that they lose touch with reality and end up destroying themselves. there is danger in getting too caught up in nostalgia and the past, and that's a phenomenon that boc explore a lot.

Question time: what's a track that everyone seems to love but you dislike? What's a track that gets hated on but you like a lot?
What should I listen to after MHTRTC and The Campfire Headphase? I liked both, just don't know where to go after that.
>>63319418
Geogaddi, I guess? I mean they only have four full-lengths, so you might as well finish those off. Then move on to the EPs, Old Tunes (both volumes), and Boc Maxima.
>>63319444
Okay, I'll do that.
What are some similar groups to Boards of Canada? Preferably some that manage to capture that Nostalgic feeling they create. Autechre is good, but not the same.
>>63319455
I guess some of Venetian Snares stuff sounds a tad like BoC but BoC is pretty OG.
>>63319455
I dunno, BoC do it like no one else. Casino versus Japan is alright. Also some of Danny Wolfer's (Legowelt) stuff hits the spot - especially his work under the Smacko's name.
Older OPN too for the more ambient side, though it's a bit more "new age-y"

How the hell Boc Maxima exists in its entirety on the internet while their other releases are pretty much legendary? I mean, Boc Maxima was just as rare as them.

I love Twoism
I've seen BOC live three times
Shit was so cash
>>63320907
How old are you?
>>63320921
Too fucking old
And I was wrong it was actually five times
>>63320964
Damn, dude.
I think they've only played like 10 times (or maybe less) in total. And the last time was 15 years ago :( Who was playing with them when you saw them?
>>63320989
First time was with Panasonic and Autechre
Second was on Manchester, could have been with Jega but my memory is hazy I was tripping
Third time was Phoenix festival 97 I think
Fourth was the Warp lighthouse rave
Fifth was ATP 2003
>>63321006
*oh Cylob was also at that first gig, I remember now
>>63321006
Damn, now I'm also jealous that you got to see 1996 era Autechre live. Have a few bootlegs from that year - they were doing an extended and rave-y version of Eutow around that time. Apparently some of Pan Sonic's monitors wrecked their gear at that gig you're talking about.
Think that would be ATP 2001. That was the one Tortoise curated. Anyway, fuck me. You're lucky man, goddamn.
>>63321069
Yeah you could be right about that ATP now you mention it, I was at both
Out of all of them I think Phoenix was the one I enjoyed most, they sounded good in a big tent
>>63321137
I still can't believe you got to see that Lighthouse show - what an incredible set list.
But yeah, I can see how a tent would suit them. Thanks for answering my q's. Cool to hear from someone who got to experience them live.

Hello, /hbg/.
why do so many people dislike jacquard causeway?
>>63321692
Literally who hates the best track of that album?
>>63321807
loads of people, or at least when it was first released. one of the tracks that really divided opinion, along with palace posy.
>>63321841
Maybe because it sounds like it was made on a Tenori-on. Which is the meanest thing I can say about that track, but really it is my favorite and I'm happy they made it. Palace Posy is pretty nuts so I can't blame anyone there, but like almost every BoC track it is loaded with interesting bits even if I'm not quite sure I like the whole. For better or worse, it makes me think of little marching silver men.
>>63321894
I think people mostly dislike Palace Posy because of the abrupt start, but that's one of the things I really like about it. I actually laughed out loud at how ridiculous it was the first time I heard it, and it sort of reminded me of oldskool BoC. I kinda miss their oddball humor and quirks - even Geogaddi had some darkly humorous moments.
>>63321692
the lame ass harp noises
>>63321692
love the first half, but it goes downhill for me midway through.
In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country is their best track imo.

fuck BoC's track naming on pre-Right to Children stuff
>fave track on AFOT 1 is Sac
>fave track on AFOT 2 is Lick
fave track on R35TT and in general is track A9
Also
>fave theme
Societal decay on TH, it's like they were trying to capture the current zeitgeist in the music instead of nostalgia, or maybe they're predicting a catastrophe coming soon and wanted to create a soundtrack for the aftermath
>ambient-driven or beat-driven
both, leaning more toward beat-driven
>new album when
I think TH was a good place to end for a good while, the four albums remind me of the four seasons and TH was them going into hibernation for the (maybe nuclear) winter
>>63319455
If you really liked the retro kiddie nostalgia vibe in parts of Right to Children, try everything by Jacob 2-2 and Datadiamond's first EP, Visit Future World
>>63321300
Apart from the DUDE WEED crowd and a few of the crazies on Twoism I agree
>occultism
what BoC releases have occult themes?
>>63327289
Geogaddi is a big one
>fav pre-MHTRTC track?
Hi Scores or Torqoise Hexagon Sun
>fav theme that BoC explore (ex. nature, occultism, geometry, numerology)?
Whatever they were going for with Geogaddi
>ambient driven BoC or beat driven BoC
Love both, probably listen to more of the ambient stuff tho
>new album when?
Probably not for a while seeing as how TH took so long.
Anyone else collect BoC vinyl? I have Twoism Hi Scores and Geogaddi (re-presses)..fuckin love em.
>fav pre-MHTRTC track?
I Will Get It Tattooed or Wouldn't You Like To Be Free (excerpt). I just really need to hear the rest of that song, hell the rest of that ep
>fav theme that BoC explore (ex. nature, occultism, geometry, numerology)?
def the post-apocalypse theme on tomorrow's harvest. It seems cliche but they do it well
>ambient driven BoC or beat driven BoC
depends, either way Happy Cycling (album vers) is still so damn catchy
>new album when?
Honestly, i's rather get an official release of one of the obscure records like Play By Numbers or Closes, but it has been three years since TH
>>63324739
I love Sac, i've been trying to transcribe it for like ever but every time it sounds like shit.
>>63319455
definetly Christ., he was a member of the band for a while before they got big.
My fave BoC stuff is located on Hi Scores, MHtRtC, and Peel Session. That's the stuff. I think it's really interesting that these guys are relatively popular. Like they're a popular choice to soundtrack acid trips and whatnot. They're a really special group and I think they'll have popularity as enduring as their influences'.
>>63313708
>Whitewater
>Mathematics and nature
>well their synths are the best part, so ambient
>going by their typical schedule not until near 2020, but they've obviously been making new music with remixes so I dunno
BoC Maxima would be far superior to MHtRtC if it had less Twoism and more MHtRtC tracks tbqh
>>63329705
Actually I just remembered 5D/audiotrack whatever off R35TT so it's a tie between them, maybe even as their best tracks ever
>>63319385
5.9.78 needed to be expanded on a lot more imo, but the 'flute frum thing' that I think is in it as well as Sixtyniner, A is to B as B is to C, and that one commercial is maybe one of the best things they've ever done
Also Jacquard Causeway is one of the best tracks off TH
>>63319455
early Black Moth Super Rainbow is like a more lo-fi and indie rock influenced BoC with a mellotron, really the closest sounding I've ever heard to them though the songwriting isn't always the best
top 3 for me would be them, Christ., and Bibio
>>63320051
Supposedly a guy got a CD-r with a recording of a tape copy Autechre made from a mutual friend of his and ae's, but this was said on funkysouls so it's not like that's confirmed or anything.
Also the other ones are known to have gotten sub-100 and sometimes sub-50 CD represses in 1996 and we still don't know how many copies of Boc Maxima exist. There's enough out there for the entire thing to have been played in its entirety by some French radio station at least.
>>63321006
I know you said you were tripping, but do you happen to remember anything at all that you don't recognize from what's been released/leaked, maybe even something that could've been on one of the unleaked albums?
>>63330013

>>63330100
>>63330139
Just tracked down the funkysouls post I was referencing, it was posted with the first known flac rip of the album so it could be legit
BOC Maxima (cassette) / (99.82% CDDA): FLAC
Here's how this particular recording became available:
Boards of Canada gave this cassette to Autechre,
Autechre gave a CDR of a recording of the cassette to Richard Devine (Schematic),
Richard Devine gave a copy of the CDR to Alex Graham (Lexaunculpt),
Alex Graham gave a copy of the CDR to me,
I gave a copy of the CDR to Jonathan Canupp (Ten And Tracer),
Jon Cannupp gave a rip the CDR to the general public via followers of the old IDM ring.
This 16bit recording of a cassette is the best rip we have.
All lossy rips I've ever found are sourced from it.
We are not meant to have this music.
BoC has not given it to us.
We can only covet it.
It is not ours.
For years, I felt that I would pay extortion prices for a rip of the CD.
But I realized I could only accept it as a gift for it to become mine.
That being said, I'm interested to hear why you guys think that. I was always under the assumption that since ae were kind of the people that discovered and promoted them that they had heard their old stuff.

Not really a theme, but all the buildup to Tomorrow's Harvest and the accounts from the listening parties make for a fun read.

The MHTRTC-beat driven stuff is king, with the Geogaddi ambient stuff reigning supreme. I like both equally.

Ya I just checked out 5-9-78 ands and dang nice one. Yippee - yet I think a lot of their earlier stuff lacks the kind of distinctive textures and timbres involved with their later work. Kind of a shame that some of their most ambient stuff has inferior sound design compared to their more beat-driven later work.
