Why is Johnny Cash always the exception for people who dislike country music?
>>63288318
Because he has tons of rock crossover appeal, both musically and image-wise. That doesn't mean he isn't hugely respected in actual country circles.
Hank Williams too, and The Bryds
>>63288318
As someone who falls under the person described (who also dabbles in similar artists) I think its because his music is very folk leaning, less country.
He's a real nigga
>>63288318
Because people won't make fun of you for liking him, and because he was so widely popular. There are plenty of other good country singers that don't have the type of image he does that people find accessible
because he's only considered country by everybody nowdays. Back in the day purists disliked him for being too rock.
>>63288437
except he didnt write folsom city blues

Rick Rubin was a big help. People don't like to mention it now but Cash was seen as a joke by the early 90s. He mentions in his biography that he was worried his legacy had been diminished because of two decades of subpar albums.
>>63288535
He was rockabilly at the very beginning of his career but quickly was accepted as a country artist before the 50s were over.
>>63288405
>>63288425
I think this is part of it but not as much as people make it out to be. For my money Willie Nelson should be the one that became the main go-to country artist. His best albums are thematic, he has a strong sense of melody (probably moreso than any of the other outlaws) and in general honed the album craft like few country artists did.
>>63288645
Not even a comparison, Cash has the better song both musically and lyrically. I mean who else could write a lyric like "I shot a man in Reno just to watch him die" in 1955?
Cause most people don't actually explore country music. They just hear a couple of generic "pick-up truck songs" and assume it all sucks. Then they hear Cash and think "ok well he's alright I guess" and don't get exposed to the multitude of other good country that is also good.
So many people misunderstand county music, it's sad. It's some of the most emotive music out there. Here, have a good country song:

Cash is a very good artist. Also when people think country today they think of Jason Aldean and Luke Brian, so he stands out
cash is folk rock
this is country

>cash is country
>this contemporary country pop
ftfy
because modern country is a shitpot
I hate to be that guy but all you need is a slide guitar, a big truck, jesus and some noteworthy hurdles you had to leap in life and boom millionaire fucking country artist
Cash actually sung about something interesting such as crime and the mistreatment of criminals
I do like Fleet Foxes s/t and Nebraska though, two amazing country folk albums

>I do like Fleet Foxes s/t and Nebraska though, two amazing country folk albums

i'm not denying that pop country is shit but it doesn't sound like you know very much about country

it should be townes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2paWybnVl4
he was borderline retarded good at melody and the simple harmonies that made up his genre. plus to live is to fly is like the best song ever written
>>63290648
this doesn't sound worse than what dylan was doing in the 80's
>>63290703
dolly parton is based
>>63290753
Dylan has nothing to do with what we're talking about but whatever
>>63290744
Townes wasn't so simple, his melodies were but man, that fingerpicking is amazing.
>>63288318
/r/ing some essential country/folk

>woody guthrie
>tom T hall
>Dolly parton
>Leonard cohen
>>63290821
not country but listen to it next. Impressionist colored folk with quaint lyrics that will make you see the nice side of life.
>>63290870
what a sad album
>>63290870
thanks anon, listening as we speak.
>tfw like Johnny Cash and country but am ashamed to admit it because he was the favorite artist of the person I hate most in the world
That said, it's all because of Rubin and those awful American Recordings albums
>>63290870
>the nice side of life
How? So far it sounds really depressing. Pretty tho.
>>63290913
And who's the person you hate most in the world?
I think growing up in the South has ruined most country for me. I get so tired of the twangy voices and shit because I hear that shit daily, especially since my roommate is from the country. Shit gets old really quickly
>>63288318
people who say they dislike country are usually referring to modern country
>>63291003
My dad, I mean I haven't seen him in years so to say I still hate him is maybe dishonest, I don't give a fuck about him, but I don't like to think about him so unfortunately I can't talk about Johnny Cash
I'm still good to talk about Hank Williams and a bunch of other classics though
>>63291046
The more I've talked to older folks the less true I really think this is. There's always been a stigma against country for being "hick" music it seems. There's a story where one of Charlie Parker's friends gave him shit for listening to Hank Williams.
>>63290934
it seems sad, but upon reading the lyrics, they're very hopeful and family oriented. As her son put it (not exactly) she was a star who shone not for for the public, but for her family
>>63290870
>Colour
>country
sorry, but non-American spellings can't be country. Country is a purely American genre.
>>63291126
1. There's actually a huge country scene in central america.
2. The anon already said that wasn't country.
>>63289352
is this now a good modern country thread?

Parker Mccolum is ite. He sounds genuine. Plus his songs are pretty simple to learn on the guitar.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoenMoqckUE
>>63289352
this literally does not make me think any more of modern country. Sure this is bearable, but I'd never willingly listen to this shit.
>>63292595
now for something a bit more lighthearted
https://youtu.be/DaEzT5MusFs
>>63292679
What i want to hear from modern country is a lap steel guitarist using effects on his shit. Lot of potential there. it'd still be traditional in that there is a lap steel, but it'd be more modern due to the heavy atmosphere.
That's what i dug about the first two Jessica Lea Mayfield albums - that lead guitarist used his leads with a fuck ton of effects to give atmosphere to the lady's simple songs.
>>63292708
and another lighthearted one with a bit of edge

I'm curious. What's good?
>>63294851
They probably use amped up pan flutes instead of harmonicas.
>>63289352
that was genuinely awful
he's impossible to dislike

>hating on a guy who never wrote short of a perfect proto-pop song

Johnny Paycheck (Little Darlin'): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6UuLFOKY-vA7ehGkrA8bPfwthMJklHtL
johnny cash, the list could go on...
People like Hank, Willie, Merle and stuff just as much. Johnny is just something really unique and hard to classify as strictly country. The folk-rock country stuff gets plenty of respect.
