Red pill me on classical/Western art music.

I've tried over and over again to get into the greats, but the only thing I ever end up being able to tolerate are Chopin's nocturnes. Each movement just seems so long and overwrought, I get bored with it before the punchline arrives.

I find it makes very good music to listen to while doing something else like browsing here or doing work or what have you
Maybe this is the pleb way to listen but I find it nice

You've probably heard it, but this is pretty good. John Williams took A L O T of "inspiration" from Holst https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Isic2Z2e2xs

Jupiter's my no.2, but the drums around 4:25(Mars) make my dick diamonds.

If you really have tried so hard to get into it before, I'm not sure what you want /mu/ to do. Especially if you've heard all the greats.

What do you think about the following pieces:

I haven't delved that far because I just didn't really connect with anything very easily. I figured maybe there's something I'm missing. I have to admit that I do feel somewhat inferior for being unable to "get" art music. I enjoy jazz and a fairly broad range of popular music. I'm not exactly Mensa level, but I'm not stupid either. It seems like I should enjoy it, but for some reason I just don't.

I just recently found a taste for classical, this is really what did it. I know it's a video game OST, but some really awesome pieces used.

This one was pretty good, I liked the first and last 90 seconds the best
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igMrO_ELOdo
This I liked very much, it's almost like an extended jazz piano solo

I haven't quite finished this one yet. I don't hate it, but I did bore of it after the first 6 mins or so.

This wasn't bad, I like the tempo of waltzes in general
>Rachmaninov op.2

I liked the piano part, but not so much the strings.

Sounds like you just have a short attention span. Which means most classical will be boring to you. Maybe listen to some preludes:

You know, that might be part of it, but at the same time, I don't have a problem listening to, say, Two Sails on a Sound or Alvin Row by Animal Collective, or Breaking Into Heaven by The Stone Roses, or Trucker's Atlas by Modest Mouse, or Freddie Freeloader by Miles Davis, and those all top out over 10 minutes in length. I think part of it is that if a pattern/motif doesn't make itself evident right away I lose interest, and a lot of classical/art pieces take a little longer to develop.

You can have 20 minute long pieces that don't require much attention to appreciate.
The density and complexity of ideas is usually much higher in art music and if you aren't paying attention it can easily fade into the background and you'll just not process anything in a meaningful way.

If you're fine with more "outside" music I recommend checking these out. They are lively and famous for their unexpected changes and explosive dynamics. It's sure to keep anyone engaged.

If you're not OK with dissonant classical listen to these

I'll definitely check these out, I'm about 7 minutes into the first Stravinsky one and I like it a lot. Honestly the first piece of art music that's really pulled me in the same way as popular music. I do enjoy dissonance and dynamics in other genres, so maybe that's what I'm looking for.

>all these fucking shit recs

holy hell /mu/, you have horrible taste in /classical/

shut the fuck up
nobody asked for your opinion

hey

eat a dick ;^)

If you don't play classical music, read classical music, or know any other fundemental rudiment of classical it will limit your enjoyment.

Learn piano and then listen to Liszt's transcendental etudes. That will give you a pretty god damn incredible respect for /classical/.

There are literally dozens if not hundreds of instrumental classical pieces that are far harder than any other genre's competitor. No guitar solo sheds light on trying to play through Paganini's caprices. etc.
>>
>>63288307
Coming from you that isn't much of an insult.

>>63285576
>I get bored
classical just isn't for you. move on. go back to your popular music.
