I hope to one day release my magnum opus and exit the world shortly after
I don't know much but Leonard Cohen's work, especially his first and Songs of Love and Hate are depressing as fuck even though there are some lighter tracks on them too.
Try 'Nico' and 'Leonard Cohen'

if you're not too hardcore for grunge this album is pretty top tier imo
plus layne was literally dying as a result of his heroin addiction, like losing teeth and shitting pants type shit, and everyone in the band knew it. so that's pretty brutal.
>>63277601
Agreed.
>>63283957
It's fake shit.
>>63276937
There's a song called "Sunday's Gloomy", I saw on an episode of QI where they said it was the most depressing song ever because the original composer killed himself and there was a newspaper article about how the song made people commit suicide all across europe
or something like that
how has nobody said ITAOTS yet? it's literally about someone falling in love with somebody that they know is dead, somebody that they can never save or help, or even meet.
>>63285825
Second that.

I'll be that guy and say Johnny Cash's version was way better/sadder. Trent Reznor said it himself, it's Cash's song.
>>63287446
Fucking teenagers can't discern real depression from melodramatic shit.
>sad depressive songs
>no country music
get on my level sons
https://youtu.be/UJCPnd3NDNs
>>63287516
Reznor's version was better, he was all messed up on drugs and at the end of his rope at the time, he wasn't just being edgy, which is what so many people are led to believe.
>>63287617
And when Cash covered Hurt he was told he would soon die of a neurological disease. Cash is cash. Watch his music video and tell me otherwise.
Nico.

His music is horrible but it definitely fits the OP's description
>>63288162
>horrible
Nobody said he knows how to sing or even play guitar properly. It's more about the songwriting and the absolute emotional sincerity of the songs, rather than how well it conforms to regular music norms.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outsider_music
Also the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston is pretty much a must if you want to actually understand his albums, so maybe give it a try before judging.
>>63288414
I like him, along with other outsider music, I was listening to Retired Boxer earlier today. His music is mostly about aesthetic and not technical ability (which he lacks greatly in, which most other outside musicians have). Just listen to a live recording of him, he barely has any musical ability.
>>63288746
>outsider music
>he barely has any musical ability
what
That's not the point and it doesn't matter. Again, watch the film about him.
Planning For Burial, Xasthur, Woods of Desolation, Austere, Moss, maybe Thou & Sunn O)). Might be worth exploring some drone/noise stuff too, for example I really enjoy Plurals.
>>63288906
Outside musician doesn't mean bad musician.
It does matter, most of his songs are 2 horribly played chords. If he didn't have the backstory he does, nobody would care about him.
>>63276937
Normie reporting in. Probably April 8th from On Avery Island.
>>63289326
Follow-up on why. It's about a guy who has crippling loneliness and drudges through life. The guy in question is Henry Darger, who wrote an incredibly long (and good) novel while having basically no friends and working as a janitor. He also never released said novel, and hid it intentionally. Much like Jeff Mangum.
>>63289441
Interesting, where are you getting this from?
Mark E Smith's breakup song is pretty depressing
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9zTSvEpt_8
Pretty unlike other fall songs
>>63289253
I only said that in the outsider music "industry" the actual quality of the performance is of no importance, and not that it has to be bad. And of course without the backstory and lyrics he wouldn't be popular. That's like 90% of his act, but I don't see how that's a bad thing since that was the point of his work from the start.
I was saying that outsider art is an incredibly subjective field with very vague rules, so your criticism is basically invalid, especially when you're saying that one of the genre's most famous and well-regarded artists is "bad". Just say you don't like him instead, because the word "horrible" doesn't mean a thing when you're talking about things like these. You'd have to be as crazy as him to think that he's actually a good musician, but that's not what his music is about, so it doesn't matter.
I don't get what's so hard to understand. It's on the damn wiki.
electro-shock blues hasn't been said
>>63285704
This album is depressive, but IDK about crushing. Hopeless maybe.
>>63289165
YES PLANNING FOR BURIAL
>>63285356
This is kind of a meme, but it is sad nonetheless. Really fucked up
>>63289505
The song title is April 8th, which is the date the little girl Darger's work was based on was murdered. That, and also the fact the song mentions climbing up steps (Darger lived in an apartment) and also the mention of paintings, which Darger did a shit ton of. Jeff is also a big fan of outsider art, and Darger is a very popular outsider artist.

>>63293682
don't get upset, it's just a meme opinion by people who want to believe they're not pretentious
nobody could possibly think their version of depression is the only real one, right? no one is actually stuck that far up their own add right?
>>63293602
cool, I'll listen to it
I have clinical depression and it's much better now, but when I was going through the worst stage of my disease back in junior and part of seniorcollege (2005-2007) I went through this really strange phase where every song I listened to made me wanna cry. The song that made me the saddest during that period was California Love by Tupac. I still don't know exactly why it triggered that response in me. I think it was because it was an especially upbeat party song and it made me angry and pitifull to think that people were having fun without me. Just a really irrational way way of thinking, but that's mentally ill people for you. I still dislike the song because it brings back really awful memories.
the way jeff buckley puts his own spin on this song breaks my heart
