I disagree and I will counter by saying that rock music is really really bad.

So Alice in chains cannot be a good band

Their EP's and self-titled album are the best things they ever did

>>63244651
Yes, they are. Now please stop tripfagging.

Grunge is a very musically limited genre. Alice in Chains were limited by their genre.
>>
>>63244739
I haven't heard their newest album, but from what i remember Black Gives Way to Blue was still not bad at all

>>63244768
You just don't like the genre in general then, which is silly imo since rock is a term that is SO diverse that i think you would find something you love if you were looking for it while being open minded enough.

>>63244815
First of all no one says they played purposely to fit into what is considered "grunge". i would like to think they just played what they love, and were labeled afterwards.

Second of all, there has been experimentation and a variety of aesthetics in the grunge era.
>>
>>63244815
Grunge wasn't even a genre. Pretty much every other grunge band was a different breed of alt rock/metal.
>>
>>63244815
I mean,
Just listen to Love Song from the EP i gave you. it's clear AIC were open minded to experimentation.

It's a good song btw
>>
>>63244950
Love Song is completely terrible, but it's supposed to be.

Am i crazy for thinking Layne Staley MAY have been a better vocalist than Kurt Cobain?
>>
>>63245030
No, you'd be crazy for thinking otherwise.
>>
>>63244815
Jerry Cantrel is a great guitarist and songwriter
>>
>>63245025
I disagree since i genuinely enjoyed it
>>
>>63245030
No, because he DEFINITELY was. Now if you were to say he may have been better than Chris Cornell, that would be a different story.

>>63245058
I enjoy it too, but it's just them fucking around in the studio.
>>
>>63244929
Yeah. Basically any hard rock band that got big in the early to mid 90s was immediately called grunge.
>>
>>63245030
Layne Staley was definitely better than Kurt Cobain.

I'd say Chris Cornell was the best grunge vocalist in terms of musicianship and overall skill/talent, but Layne Staley blows everybody else away as a lyricist.
>>
>>63245030
Not at all and I think most people would agree with you. Kurt had a unique, memorable voice for sure, but Layne's voice was really something else.
>>
>>63244739

>>
>>63245030
I Dont know, In In Utero you can really hear how fucked up he was, i think Kurt was slightly better
>>
Fuck yeah grunge thread finally listen to sunshine by aic and nothing to say by soundgarden

>I haven't heard their newest album, but from what i remember Black Gives Way to Blue was still not bad at all

Yeah. William DuVall is a solid singer. But singing for a post-Staley Alice In Chains is like trying to sing for a post-Mercury Queen or a post-Ozzy Black Sabbath. People are going to hate it, it's never going to be good enough for them and there's not a lot anybody can do about it, except ignore them and move on.
>>
>>63245379
I can respect Dio Sabbath because he did something different. What I don't like is when singers try to be someone they're not and replicate another guy.

>>
>>63245413
Oh he definitely killed it, but that didn't stop a large segment of sabbath fans from hating him any way

>>63245397
Yeah, I think that's what Queen did with Paul Rodgers and all their replacement vocalists, but I feel like AiC is trying to carry on as a band, rather than dwell in the past and they're doing a good job of it. I like William DuVall, although sometimes his live performances of old AiC songs are not so good. He tries to copy some of Staley's vocal nuances and it's irritating.
>>
>>63245251
Mark Lanegan had a biter grunge voice than Cornell and so did the guy from Paw
>>
>>63245379
The thing is they didn't look for a "Layne replacement" like many people thing. They completely changed the dynamic of their sound. Cantrell sings far more lead now than he ever did with Layne and sometimes DuVall takes the backup role. You're right that plenty of people will just never have AIC without Layne Staley, and I get that, but for those of us who stuck around AIC brought something different to the table when William DuVall came in.

It might be worth remembering for AIC fans that even in the mid 90s the band was already moving in a more Cantrell-lead-vocals direction. His leads are all over JoF and s/t.
>>
>>63244783
Favorite track off of that album?
Mine's Shame In You
>>
>>63245251
>I'd say Chris Cornell was the best grunge vocalist in terms of musicianship and overall skill/talent
I definitely agree with this.

>but Layne Staley blows everybody else away as a lyricist.
Now this I'm not sure I agree with but I understand it.
>>
>>63245649
Nah Staleys lyrics suck arse man, worst thing about AIC, don't forget Jerry wrote a lot of the stuff too
>>
>>63245631
For me it's Shame In You, God Am, or Over Now. I'll just say Shame In You if I'm only picking one.

I still think the album version of Over Now is better than the Unplugged one.
>>
>>63245631
Shame In You is definitely a good one. I'd probably pick God Am as my favorite though

Jerry Cantrell wrote Rooster
>>
>>63244815
They went beyond the spectrum of grunge though, just listen to Jar of Flies and Sap, even Dirt isn't pure grunge. Jerry was very country and blues inspired in his songwriting and playing
>>
Love this shit right here.

Also, Cornell is a better vocalist than Layne was.

Definitely Shame In You, that song used to give me goosebumps when I first heard it.
>>
>>63246012
me too, one of their most underrated sad songs to me
>>
>>63247045
Shame In You and Am I Inside are the 2 saddest songs I have ever heard probably. Chilling
>>
>>63245030
Layne Staley has the most beautiful voice in grunge/any associated genre
>>
>>63245800
How do you define that? I think Layne had twice the emotion in his voice, I preferred the sound of his voice overall, and I didn't find his vocal style corny like I find Cornell's; He's too dadrock
>>
>>63244815
they really weren't a grunge band at all
not that the term has much meaning to begin with anyways
