good herbie:

magic windows

bad herbie:
most of the rest

so yeah, i think a good part of his discog is actually phenomenal and i'd like to hear why u think they arent

as for sun ra

i really think you dont know jack about the ra

a lot of his best work is little known to anybody but hardcore fans, examples being jazz in silhouette (nowhere near as known as say lanquidity or space is the place), nubians of plutonia, heliocentric works of sun ra (pt 1), batman and robin and many more

not even mentioning that both ra and herbie pioneered electronic music (no, not just fazz fusion) and definitely help establish electric sounds as something that would approach the mainstream

Maybe I was exaggerating when I said he only had "one or two". My point is, he has some great stuff, but for the sheer volume of stuff he has, a lot of it is very inconsistent and just doesn't feel fully developed.

Herbie just doesn't appeal to me, especially his funk work in general. He's a great pianist and I love his work in ensembles, but he seems oddly weak as a bandleader to me
>>
>>63237350

if u dnt like herbie as a bandleader then maybe check out some of his insane solo shit

"magic windows" is essentially just herbie (and friends) fucking around on 3 different synths, its amazing

a lot of the stuff raj did is sub par, or just a diff version of something we alrdy know, or not even officially released therefore not available in good quality

that is true

though you have to keep in mind there's still an almost equal amount of great music, too

sun song, atlantis, lanquidity, jazz in silhouette, space is the place, batman & robin, unity, sleeping beauty...

what do u think about rahsan roland kirk?

Yeah I'm on the same boat of jazz, just been cutting through all the classics I haven't heard or haven't listened to in a long time, as well as some recommended gems here and there
