This is an awesome album! I received it in the mail today as a preorder through their website. As with previous albums, Twenty One Pilots keep up their consistent theme of thoughtful/philosophical poetry based lyrics, which are written by the singer, Tyler Joseph. The sound of the music itself is kind of a passionate and genre-bridging mix of rap, rock, indie pop, hip hop, emo, electronic and reggae music (which varies depending on the song). Plus the singer both raps and sings in most songs. The singer also plays the keyboard, piano, ukulele and bass guitar. The drummer, Josh Dun (it's a two-member band), is very talented too! I first heard this band locally a few years ago at Arkansas State University, where they stole the show as an opener to the great live band Neon Trees.
They seem to have a deep religious theme in most of their songs (especially the ones that aren't top singles), as with many of the songs the singer seems to actually be singing to God, while others have clear religious references. However, even as an agnostic (unknowing/undecided) I don't mind in the least bit as I sing along, because it seems more like existentialism, which emphasizes the free and responsible individual who is determining their own development in the face of the disorientation and confusion of an apparently absurd world, rather than evangelism/preaching (which in my opinion it is not).
That's just what I get out of them anyway, and you might get something different from them, but for me it's about the critical personal pursuit of the purpose/meaning of life...dealing with one's happiness/unhappiness...and hopefully finding the joy in your beliefs to push through it all.
In my opinion, their name deserves to be mentioned alongside figures like John Lennon and Leo Tolstoy. They're that good on so many levels -- musically and intellectually. They entertain me. They inspire me to create. They make me think. A++

i know this is a copypasta from amazon but this band is really annoying
i saw some moderately attractive girl on campus wearing a sweatshirt the other day, I thought people who listen to this kind of music only liked the singles and didn't give a shit about albums and the band itself but I guess I was wrong

TOP has some half-decent pop songs when the main guy is just singing, but I haven't heard a single "rap" from them that hasn't made me want to gouge my ears out

Is that supposed to be mick jagger fucking diamond dog david bowie
this will be the semi-accepted "hey, these guys were kind of good and didn't deserve their backlash"-band on /mu/ in a few years, kinda like what MCR is now
heard it here first, you can screencap this
For those who don't know, the emo style does not require you to be sad or depressed. Emo is an a brief I at ion for emotion, and emotion is not restricted to depressing feelings. If you are emo it does not mean you cut, or are suicidal. Emo means you quite literally wear your heart on your slewv, by dressing to how you are feeling. There are bright emos, and there are dark emos. They dress according to the way they feel. And sadly oftentimes people do feel depressed. They aren't pretending because they think it's cool. A lot of people suffer from depression and extreme sadness. And everyone will suffer through it at least once in their lives. Most people go through it in their teen years because those are a one of the hardest years in our lives. We are still trying to figure out who we are. And for some once they've decoders who they are they have to worry about how their parents will think of them. A lot of teens have trouble meeting their parents expectation a of who they should be because they just aren't that person. When my mom had me she wanted a little girl to take shopping and buy frilly pink dresses. And during my toddler years I was a pretty pink balarena. But when I got older I realized that that wasn't who I wanted to be. I was a goth at heart. And while I'm on the topic of "styles" goth, emo, punk and many other styles encompassing not just a certain way of dressing, or a special type music. Although goth did start as a music movement. But all of them are lifestyle choices. You can't just dress goth and truly be goth. Goth is a mindset. An appreciation for darker things. And finding beauty in those things. It is not devil worship or satanism. It is measly finding things like bats, or skeletons beautiful and interesting. I've explained emo as best I can but I am not emo so I can't really say that my description is 100% but I cm sure someone else can fill in whatever I missed.

>implying "house of gold" isn't complete garbage
nice try kiddo. This band has nothing of value if you'd actually listen to them.

>Emo is an a brief I at ion for emotion, and emotion is not restricted to depressing feelings.
seriously now though, Emo of any kind is shit because it doesn't seem to get this and only has one, maybe two modes of expression

don't forget nostalgia will play into it

THE FACT
>>63111466
MCR wrote decent pop-punk and most people on /mu/ are probably nostalgic for them, I don't really see top having the same effect
>>63111882
i do, they seem to have that kinda fanbase
>>63111522
Its whatever. Its an ok song. Certainly better than the rapping songs
>>63111522
Heavydirtysoul is a pretty good song
at least it's fairly unique for being so popular
you could write off the genre hopping they do as a gimmick but it's at least some sort of a something that creates interest
Hey, it's good music for picking up decent looking college girls
