Avenged Sevenfold have remained in my top 5 favorite bands from middle school to today, and I always find a new reason to keep the commitment up. I actually got into them through Waking The Fallen, which I consider to be a near flawless album. Chapter Four is one of the greatest biblical allegories to ever grace the canvas of metal, if not the. The lyrics on this album reach a level of bonechilling horror far higher than bands that try to compete with each other to show you the goriest fictional apocalypse. The amount of loneliness and anxiety and fear that bleeds through this project is just so tangible, and the impending doom of death and grievance against time is something that resonates with me on a very personal level. Even for those who don't, surely at least one line off "Eternal Rest" will give you that pit feeling in your stomach.
Anyway then I got into City Of Evil, entirely different sound, and loved it almost as much. For all the trash talk about A7X being generic, there really is nothing you can find out there that sounds like City Of Evil. The darting high-pitch melodies that get hurled around like pointy needles on the chorus are as fast-paced, energetic and thrashy as any chordal riff a mid-rate metal band could shit out.
And before I was even out of middle school, around 7th grade, I started digging into STST, and hoooo man, this album blew my fucking mind. I came to learn later more about its crust punk and hardcore influences, but at the time I had no idea anything like it could exist.
Fuck man I can talk A7X all day. without a doubt the most undeserved victim of the "fanbase and appearance" bias that made people literally just ASSUME they were bad without listening to anything but a radio single from their self-titled.
It's funny to look back at how far I've come to where my other favorite artists span from Kate Bush to Klaus Schulze to Converge to Of Montreal, but these guys are still right near the top.
